This book was released on 2019 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Job satisfaction literature has relied primarily on self-report responses. This study sought to expand past research by using an "other rater" to rate job satisfaction and introduce the friend to do so. This study utilized a sample of realtors to investigate the differences between self and friend reports of job satisfaction. Although the novel hypotheses were not supported, this study suffered from a low sample size when collecting both self and friend-reports of job satisfaction. The low correlation between self-ratings and friend ratings of overall job satisfaction, r(29) = .12, p = .53, combined with the high mean scores of job satisfaction from the self-report group, (M = 4.69, SD = 0.47), shows that self-reporting of job satisfaction may not be accurate. Additionally, it may be influenced by ego protection to promote one's own image, and workplace friends may have different insight into an individual's workplace attitudes. Future research should replicate this study using a sample from a different industry in which employees work closely together, and should investigate other attitudinal constructs.

Book excerpt: Air traffic control specialists (ATCSs) and airway facility technicians (AFTs) were compared on measures of job attitudes and interests. A total of 792 ATCSs and 2,366 AFTs completed the Strong Vocational Interest Blank (SVIB) and questionnaires concerning job satisfaction and job attitudes. Both groups indicated high overall job satisfaction and general agreement about areas of job satisfaction and dissatisfaction. However, ATCSs reported more satisfaction than AFTs from various aspects of the work itself and from salary, while AFTs were more satisfied with responsibility, working conditions, and Civil Service retirement. The AFTs were more favorable to management than ATCSs. On the SVIB, ATCSs had higher scores than AFTs on scales concerned with interpersonally oriented vocations (e.g., social service, sales) and lower scores on technical-scientific occupational scales. The findings suggest that these two employee groups have much in common with respect to their attitudes toward work while at the same time having certain discriminable characteristics that have implications for both personnel and motivational programs. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The sociological study of organizations encompasses both planned and formal organizations as well as spontaneous and informal ones. Sociologists examine organizations with attention to structure and objectives, interactions among members and among organizations, the relationship between the organization and its environment and the social significance or social meaning of the organization. The ways of defining and examining organizations vary depending on the theoretical emphasis. This book focuses on three things: * providing a wide and historically accurate portrait of the diversity of sociological theories and their application to organizational studies * updating selections that reflect a variety of ways that new technology affects methods of organizing and types of organizations * including readings that examine a range of both formal and informal structures, and both deliberate and impromptu interactions. Lively and provocative, this textbook is theoretically rigorous, disciplinarily informed and representative of heterogeneity within organizational studies.

Book excerpt: Several studies have documented differential job satisfaction by race. This paper combines structural, cultural, social and social psychological factors in an attempt to explain some of these differences. It was found that these factors account for a modest amount of the differences in satisfaction for black and white employees. Differential work assignments account for some of this difference. The importance employees place on interpersonal relations and the degree to which they are integrated into or isolated from friendship relationships also have an impact. Although there is a significant difference between races in their vertical position in the organization, this difference does not acount for differential job satisfaction, net of the other factors. Although these factors help explain some of the differential job satisfaction between Blacks and Whites, they do not account for significantly higher levels of job satisfaction reported by Mexican Americans. To explain some of this difference, employees' perceived relative deprivation was considered. Controlling for other factors, however, relative deprivation was not significantly associated with job satisfaction. It is concluded that other explanations must be sought to explain differential job satisfaction by race and that there are different determinants for members of different races.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A substantial and persistent earnings gap exists between male and female employees in Britain. Despite this gap, British women typically report higher levels of job satisfaction than men. We consider this apparent contradiction by asking whether the higher job satisfaction reported by female employees is associated with their being less concerned by the level of co-worker wages. We explore the relationship between reported job satisfaction and own, relative and comparison-group wage; allowing for asymmetry in responses across genders. We find that choice of relevant comparison group is affected by gender; men display behaviour characteristic of competitiveness while women do not.
