The first year-round weight-loss program for children and teens in the country, AOS teaches students how to make healthy eating and exercise priorities in their lives forever. For AOS students, losing weight not only helps them look and feel better, it fundamentally transforms their lives—encouraging them to build self-esteem, combat depression, and increase their academic performance. In The Sierras Weight-Loss Solution for Teens and Kids, the founders and program leaders of AOS offer parents everywhere a 12-week proven program based on the school's curriculum. The program gives week-by-week meal plans, recipes, and an exercise regimen, as well as crucial advice for getting the whole family involved in maintaining long-term weight loss. And, it helps kids change their thinking about food, and stay focused and committed to a new healthy lifestyle forever. With inspiring stories from AOS graduates throughout, this book provides the most effective blueprint to ensure lasting success. Academy of the Sierras has been featured in The New York Times, The Washington Post, USA Today, People, the Sacramento Bee, and the Los Angeles Times, as well as on CNN, Dateline, The Dr. Phil Show, and NPR. In addition to their original school near Fresno, California, AOS is opening a second school in Brevard, North Carolina, in the spring of 2007. In 2008, they are opening a school in the northeast. AOS is operated by Healthy Living Academies, which also runs six Wellspring summer weight-loss camps across the country.

In fact, today's generation of kids may be the first to experience shorter life spans than their parents. Leading pediatrician Dr. Joanna Dolgoff's Red Light, Green Light, Eat Right teaches kids how to make healthy choices based on the principles of the traffic light: green light foods are nutritious, yellow light foods are eaten in moderation, and red light foods are occasional treats. The program, which has a proven 96 percent success rate, can be tailored to suit any child's age, gender, and weight goals. Snacks and meals are designed to ensure that kids get the nutrients they need to not only lose or maintain weight, but to grow strong, healthy bodies. Complete with sample menus, recipes, and an index of more than 1,000 color-coded foods, Red Light, Green Light, Eat Right provides a practical solution for one of the biggest health crises facing America's children.

Book excerpt: Table of ContentsIntroductionEating Habits of Children and TeenagersReason for Particular Dietary HabitsThe Right Necessary Nourishing FatsTips for Planning Menus for KidsWrong food habits In Teenagers and KidsEating DisordersAnorexia in TeenagersBinge EatingConclusionWhen I Grow up, I Am Going to Be...Author BioPublisher IntroductionLet us face it; every parent out there who is interested in making sure that his child eats a proper regular diet is going to come up against three problems - children are very fussy eaters, their likes and dislikes are going to depend upon your eating lifestyle and of course the social habit and activity is going to depend upon the child looking around and wanting to eat what his friends eat, at school, in the homes of their friends and so they adopt the eating habits of friends, companions and peers. As a child you are going to like to eat what children in your peer group enjoy eating best. The statistics of childhood obesity are getting to be rather scary because they have tripled in the last 40 years! When we were young, there was rarely a youngster who was fat. That is because we ate just enough of food to fill our bellies, and never over ate because that would make us sleepy and lethargic, during our lunch hour play session. Also, at that time, our parents were interested in making sure that we had good nourishing food to eat at regular times. We never skipped a meal. We never ate between meals, because munching between meals was considered the activity of kids who did not have anything constructive to do and that is why they wanted to do to keep themselves occupied. And so we never suffered from malnutrition or overfeeding. Also, there was one habit, which would not be compromised, upon, under any circumstance. Meals always had to be taken at the dinner table among the family members, gathered at breakfast, lunch and dinner. I was astonished to see a large number of modern-day 21st-century parents saying that they really did not have the time to eat meals with their children because they were either working, or they really could not manage this bit of time out in communication with their children. We definitely did not know about that idiotic psychological lifestyle babble called quality time, which is now being used by parents, in order to show that they are caring parents, and they spend 15 minutes a day, talking to their children.
