Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past two centuries, many aspects of criminal behavior have been investigated. Finding this information and making sense of it all is difficult when many studies would appear to offer contradictory findings. The Handbook of Crime Correlates collects in one source the summary analysis of crime research worldwide. It provides over 400 tables that divide crime research into nine broad categories: Pervasiveness and intra-offending relationships Demographic factors Ecological and macroeconomic factors Family and peer factors Institutional factors Behavioral and personality factors Cognitive factors Biological factors Crime victimization and fear of crime Within these broad categories, tables identify regions of the world and how separate variables are or are not positively or negatively associated with criminal behavior. Criminal behavior is broken down into separate offending categories of violent crime, property crime, drug offenses, sex offenses, delinquency, general and adult offenses, and recidivism. Accompanying each table is a description of what each table indicates in terms of the positive or negative association of specific variables with specific types of crime by region. This book should serve as a valuable resource for criminal justice personnel and academics in the social and life sciences interested in criminal behavior.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Developmental Theories of Crime and Delinquency, Terence P. Thornberry and his contributors show that criminal behavior is not a static human attribute, but ebbs and flows over the life course of the individual. Criminal behavior tends to follow a distinct psychological pattern. It is relatively uncommon during childhood, is initiated by most offenders during adolescence, flourishes during late adolescence and early childhood, and usually diminishes or disappears by the mid-twenties. This pattern is not characteristic of all people--some never commit crimes and others become career criminals--but it is a general description of the developmental pattern of criminal offenders. This pattern has profound implications for theories of crime and delinquency. Not only does it explain initiation into, maintenance of, and desistance from involvement in crime, it offers insight into why crime flourishes during adolescence. Traditional theories of crime and delinquency have often failed to distinguish among different phases of criminal careers. They tend to ignore developmental changes that occur across a person's life course, changes that coincide with and can explain the causes and patterns of criminal behavior. This paperback edition of the seventh volume of the distinguished series Advances in Criminological Theory moves us from static identifications of the criminal by presenting a broad range of developmental explanations of crime. Each contributor articulates a developmental or life course perspective in explaining how people become involved in delinquency and crime. Each covers a wide range of theoretical territory and reveals how a developmental perspective enhances the explanatory power of traditional theories of crime and delinquency. This volume is an invaluable tool for criminologists, sociologists, psychologists, and other professionals seeking to teach how crime and violence can be understood in our culture.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Book on criminological research studies and theories in the areas of crime, delinquency and social process. The emphasis in this book, however, is not exclusively on the problems of explaining what statistical distributions of crime and delinquency mean and how individuals become criminals and delinquents. The reader should be aware that as one examines statistical distributions of delinquency and crime rates and offender characteristics one must pay close attention to variables that relate to the settings and circumstances under which the statistics were collected. Once social scientists simply analyzed the available statistical facts. The datum for study is the process by which the statistical information is assembled, not just the final assembly. For example, arrest statistics are often used as the basis of generalizations about the social class distribution of delinquency and crime, but there is systematic underreporting of crimes of respectable segments of the society. Thus, among the selections reprinted in this book are research studies, descriptive accounts, and essays devoted to the illegal activities of businessmen, labor union officials, physicians, politicians, policemen, and middle-class youngsters. The theoretical framework of this book is designed to make these violations just as understandable as the criminal violations of persons in the lower socioeconomic class.

I received my Ph. D. from Indiana University, where I worked with Sutherland, and the volume is made up principally of my writings on differential association during the years 1952-1963. However, the volume is neither a festschrift nor a book of reprints. The original materials have in most cases been quite severely edited in order to give the volume coherence and in order to minimize repetition and redundancy. For example, portions of one journal article appear in Chapters I, IV and V; parts of a chapter published in a recent book appear in Chapters I, II and III; and Chapter IX is composed of two inter-related articles, published eight years apart. Chapter I has not appeared elsewhere in its present form, but most of it consists of snippets culled from several of my articles and books and woven together in new form. The book is intended primarily for non-American readers, who on the whole are not as familiar with Sutherland's theory (or with other sociological and social psychological theories about delinquency, crime and corrections) as are Americans. Yet at least a nodding acquaintance with Sutherland's work is becoming increasingly necessary to an intelligent reading of the American literature in criminology.

Book excerpt: Abstract: This report from the Surgeon General presents a comprehensive discussion of the relationship between diet and chronic disease. The main conclusion is that overconsumption of certain dietary components is now a major concern for Americans. The chi ef issue is the disproportionately large consumption of foods high in fats and the lack of consumption of foods high in complex carbohydrates and fiber (vegetables, fruits, and whole grain products). The publication includes an examination of the role of diet in major disease groups, a discussion of maternal and child nutrition issues, and a review of common dietary fads and frauds. Extensive citations and supporting documentation are presented to justify conclusions and recommendations.
