Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since its first appearance in 1950, Pounder's Marine Diesel Engines has served seagoing engineers, students of the Certificates of Competency examinations and the marine engineering industry throughout the world. Each new edition has noted the changes in engine design and the influence of new technology and economic needs on the marine diesel engine. This eighth edition retains the directness of approach and attention to essential detail that characterized its predecessors. There are new chapters on monitoring control systems and governor systems, gas turbines and safety aspects of engine operation. Important developments such as the latest diesel-electric LNG carriers that will soon be in operation. After experience as a seagoing engineer with the British India Steam Navigation Company, Doug Woodyard held editorial positions with the Institution of Mechanical Engineers and the Institute of Marine Engineers. He subsequently edited The Motor Ship journal for eight years before becoming a freelance editor specializing in shipping, shipbuilding and marine engineering. He is currently technical editor of Seatrade, a contributing editor to Speed at Sea, Shipping World and Shipbuilder and a technical press consultant to Rolls-Royce Commercial Marine. * Designed to reflect the recent changes to SQA/Marine and Coastguard Agency Certificate of Competency exams. Careful organisation of the new edition enables readers to access the information they require * Brand new chapters focus on monitoring control systems and governor systems, gas turbines and safety aspects of engine operation * High quality, clearly labelled illustrations and figures

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Phenomenology of Diesel Combustion and Modeling Diesel is the most efficient combustion engine today and it plays an important role in transport of goods and passengers on land and on high seas. The emissions must be controlled as stipulated by the society without sacrificing the legendary fuel economy of the diesel engines. These important drivers caused innovations in diesel engineering like re-entrant combustion chambers in the piston, lower swirl support and high pressure injection, in turn reducing the ignition delay and hence the nitric oxides. The limits on emissions are being continually reduced. The- fore, the required accuracy of the models to predict the emissions and efficiency of the engines is high. The phenomenological combustion models based on physical and chemical description of the processes in the engine are practical to describe diesel engine combustion and to carry out parametric studies. This is because the injection process, which can be relatively well predicted, has the dominant effect on mixture formation and subsequent course of combustion. The need for improving these models by incorporating new developments in engine designs is explained in Chapter 2. With “model based control programs” used in the Electronic Control Units of the engines, phenomenological models are assuming more importance now because the detailed CFD based models are too slow to be handled by the Electronic Control Units. Experimental work is necessary to develop the basic understanding of the pr- esses.

Book excerpt: Modern Diesel Technology: Diesel Engines is an ideal primer for the aspiring diesel technician, using simple, straightforward language and a building block approach to build a working knowledge of the modern computer-controlled diesel engine and its subsystems. The book includes dedicated chapters for each major subsystem, along with coverage devoted to dealing with fuel subsystems, and the basics of vehicle computer control systems. Fuel and engine management systems are discussed in generic terms to establish an understanding of typical engine systems, and there is an emphasis on fuel systems used in post-2007 diesel engines. Concluding with a chapter on diesel emissions and the means used to control them, this is a valuable resource designed to serve as a foundation for more advanced studies in diesel engine technology
