Ein solches Engagement wird im Zeitalter der fortschreitenden Globalisierung wirtschaftlicher Prozesse von den Unternehmen, insbesondere von den transnational agierenden, erwartet, da diese einen grossen Einfluss auf das Wohlergehen der Gesellschaft ausüben können. Da der Staat nicht mehr einzig alle Aufgaben bewältigen kann, bedarf es des Engagements und der Initiative der Firmen, und zwar nicht ausschliesslich in finanzieller Hinsicht, sondern insbesondere auch in der aktiven Gestaltung von Umwelt und Gesellschaft, deren Teil sie sind. Unternehmen sollen Profitabilität und Verantwortlichkeit kombinieren. Die Stakeholder-Perspektive wird als Ansatz zur Lösung dieser neuen Herausforderungen vorgeschlagen. Unter einer Stakeholder-Orientierung versteht man die Verankerung einer Wahrnehmung sozialer Verantwortung in die Unternehmenspolitik. Es gilt, nicht nur die Rendite von Eigenkapitalgebern zu steigern, sondern auch gesellschaftlichen Verpflichtungen nachzugehen und sich ethisch-politisch zu engagieren. Dabei stellt sich die Frage, ob sich eine Stakeholder-Orientierung auch mit dem Streben der Unternehmung nach wirtschaftlicher Rationalität vereinen lässt. In einer Studie haben McWilliams und Siegel aufgezeigt, dass die Berücksichtigung von Stakeholder-Interessen eine Maximierung des Shareholder-Values nicht aussschliesst, sondern ihr zuträglich ist. Jensens Theorie der „Enlightened Value Maximization“ betont, dass die intelligente Verbindung beider Ansätze das erfolgreiche und somit langfristige Bestehen eines Unternehmens sichert, wobei nur die Interessen derjenigen Stakeholder berücksichtigt werden sollen, die zum langfristigen Firmenwert beitragen. Die Notwendigkeit eines kontinuierlichen Stakeholder-Managements und die Bereitschaft zum Dialog mit den Stakeholdern spielen eine zentrale Rolle. Problematisch in dieser Diskussion bleiben die fehlende demokratische Legitimierung der Unternehmen zu sozial-politischem Handeln und ihre umstrittene Wahrnehmung von Regierungsfunktionen sowie die sich auftuenden Handlungsspielräume für Manager. Eine fehlende ethisch-normative Formulierung der Stakeholder-Theorie stellt einen weiteren Kritikpunkt dar.

How can they contribute to more efficient use of pharmaceuticals with less environmental burden and less risk for drinking water. The book "Sustainable Pharmacy" will address all these issues and will be the first one dealing with this important topic.

Since then the book has gone through five more editions and has been translated into Spanish and Italian. The present English translation is based on the sixth German edition. The author was Professor of Economics at the University of Freiburg, Germany. Professor Eucken was a student at a time when the Historical School dominated the teaching of econo mics at the German universities. Although, at the beginning of his career, he did some work along the lines of the Historical School, neither the ~ims nor the methods of historical research the field of economics as practised by the representatives in of the Historical School satisfied him; and the fact that the members of this school were unable to explain the causes of economic events such as the German inflation after World War I was an added reason for him to turn to economic theory. He became, among German economists, the foremost opponent of the Historical School, which he criticised in several publica tions. Through his wrItings and his teaching he contributed his share to the revival of interest in economic theory which was noticeable in the 'twenties. And he was one of the few economists left in Germany who helped to keep this interest alive during the 'thirties and during World War II. During this time he published Kapitaltheoretische Untersuchungen (1936), and the present volume, which immediately gave rise to an extensive discussion in German economic journals.
