Book excerpt: There can be no doubt that there is a link between early Christian statements on human dignity and the corresponding modern concept, as it appears ever more frequently in current bioethical debates. This study attempts to throw light on the surprisingly complex process of the emergence of such a Christian concept of human dignity in antiquity and portrays it as a process governed by contradictions and antagonisms: between biblical and platonic anthropology; between a platonic and a stoic perception of humanity; between gnostic and antignostic cosmology; between biblically based criticism of human culture on the one hand and heilsgeschichtlichem cultural optimism on the other hand; between Greek and Roman thinking. This history of the idea of the “dignity of man” is being recounted taking into consideration the complex matrix of Christian theory and practice (including issues such as worship, contraception and abortion), piety and theological reflection, ethics, liturgy and theological as well as cutural anthropology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Why does the human species exist? Are men, women and children of this species possibly assigned a specific task in life? What is right or wrong, good or bad? How should they live? And what happens after her physical death? Belief, dear readers, as church dogma, ultimately means nothing more than mental standstill and a stunted longing in the search for real spiritual being, embedded in spiritual energy.

Book excerpt: Recognizing that tyranny takes on secular as well as traditional guises, Os Guinness seeks a return to the first principles of religious and political freedom. Hearkening back to the "soul liberty" of English Puritan Roger Williams, Guinness argues that a society's greatest bulwark against abuse lies in its people's freedom of conscience.

Book excerpt: The articles deal with the frameworks and causes for religious intolerance and discrimination in selected European countries. The methods of anti-cult groups and their supporters in governments and the mainline churches are described on the basis of specific case studies. Furthermore, the essays reflect about the threats for freedom of religion, which can arise on the one hand out of these anti-sect movements but on the other hand also out of the re-establishment of the religious in the post-secular era.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new translation of Immanuel Kant’s 1793 "Religion within the Limits of Mere Reason" in modern American English with the original German in the back for reference. This is Volume X in the Complete Works of Immanuel Kant from Livraria Press. Kant's "Die Religion innerhalb der Grenzen der bloßen Vernunft" is one of his most accessible works due to it's simplicity and basic lexicon. Here he writes about "the relationship of religion to human nature". Kant strove to fix both the Natural science and Theology by keeping them both in their respective dialectal parameters. Living through the heart of the Enlightenment, Kant observed the Epistemological problems brought about by One-World Newtonian Mechanical Reductionism, and the bad counter-reactions that Protestant apologists made. Like Hegel, Kant wants to restore faith as the "guardian of the speculative mysteries". This edition contains the prefaces to both versions of this work.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book puts forward a new epistemological framework for a theory of religion and gender’s role in the public sphere. It provides a sophisticated understanding of gender and its relation to religion as a primarily performative category of knowledge production, rooting that understanding in case studies from around the world. Gender and religion are examined alongside biopolitics and the influence of capitalism, neoliberalism and empire. The book analyses the interdependence of religion, gender and new nationalisms in the Palestinian territories, South Africa and the USA, scrutinising the biopolitical interferences of nation states and dominant political and religious institutions. It then moves on to uncover counter-discourses and spaces of activism and agency in contexts such as East Germany and the Occupy Wall Street movement. Using gender, queer and trans theory in tandem with postcolonial and post-secular perspectives, readers are shown a more nuanced understanding of critical contemporary questions related to religion, gender and sexuality. This is a bold new take on religion, gender and public life. As such, it will be of keen interest to scholars of Religious Studies and Gender Studies, as well as those working on religion’s interaction with Politics, Sociology and Social Activism.

Book excerpt: Jewish anthropological beliefs during the Hellenistic-Roman period are an important but previously neglected area of biblical exegesis and Jewish studies. In an effort to address this deficiency, this volume brings together 20 essays related to the subject of sin and death, with special emphasis on integrating material from neighboring cultures. Thus, the volume provides an exemplary foundation for further research on ancient Jewish anthropology.
