Book excerpt: This volume on mechanics of rigid and elastic bodies contains early papers concerning geometric statics, accompanied by works dealing with the motion of compound pendula and the deformation of beams. The papers on mechanics in this volume do not encompass the area of hydraulics, which occupies approximately one half of the papers dealing with mechanical problems and which are included in volume 7. This collection constitutes, roughly, one eighth of the entire work written by Bernoulli.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The works from Daniel Bernoulli's youth contained in this first volume of his Collected Works bear witness above all of his versatility; they deal with subjects as different as physiology, formal logic, mathematical analysis, hydrodynamics and positional astronomy. Daniel Bernoulli's contacts with Italian scientists gave rise to several controversies. The present volume documents both sides in each of these debates, which culminated with the publication of Bernoulli's first book Exercitationes mathe- maticae in 1724. The discussions with the renowned mathematician Jacopo Riccati on second-order differential equations and on the Newtonian theory of the out-flow of fluids from vessels deserve particular interest. A third group of texts goes back to the time Bernoulli spent at the newly- founded Academy of Sciences in St. Petersburg, where he had been appointed in 1725. There he worked out two more contributions to physiological research - on muscle movement and on the blind spot in the human eye - as well as his only paper in positional astronomy. This last work - suggested by a prize question of the Paris Académie des Sciences - became the occasion for a vehement conflict; the present volume documents these "Zänkereien" (squabbles) and also reproduces three competing treatises. To complete the documentation of Daniel Bernoulli's work on physiology, the volume also includes his academic ceremonial speech De Vita of 1737, where he sketches for the first time the circulation of the work done by the human heart, and its elaboration by Bernoulli's student Daniel Passavant.

Book excerpt: When, after the agreeable fatigues of solicitation, Mrs Millamant set out a long bill of conditions subject to which she might by degrees dwindle into a wife, Mirabell offered in return the condition that he might not thereby be beyond measure enlarged into a husband. With age and experience in research come the twin dangers of dwindling into a philosopher of science while being enlarged into a dotard. The philosophy of science, I believe, should not be the preserve of senile scientists and of teachers of philosophy who have themselves never so much as understood the contents of a textbook of theoretical physics, let alone done a bit of mathematical research or even enjoyed the confidence of a creating scientist. On the latter count I run no risk: Any reader will see that I am untrained (though not altogether unread) in classroom philosophy. Of no ignorance of mine do I boast, indeed I regret it, but neither do I find this one ignorance fatal here, for few indeed of the great philosophers to explicate whose works hodiernal professors of phil osophy destroy forests of pulp were themselves so broadly and specially trained as are their scholiasts. In attempt to palliate the former count I have chosen to collect works written over the past thirty years, some of them not published before, and I include only a few very recent essays.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jacob Bernoulli (1654-1705), founder of Basel's dynasty of mathematicians, left a relatively small body of correspondence for posterity. Published here for the first time are all 50 preserved letters sent to or by Jacob Bernoulli, and documentary evidence is presented of some l00 further letters no longer extant. The correspondence with Leibniz takes up the bulk of the volume and is also the most substantial scientifically. Topics range from Bernoulli's theories of elasticity and probability, to Leibniz' "Dynamik," to the integration of algebraic functions, to controversies over differential calculus and calculus of variations. The exchange offers rare insights into the personal histories and working habits of these two correspondents. Science politics dominates the brief but intensive correspondence (1700-01) with Geneva's Nicolas Fatio de Duillier, a leading exponent of Newtonian mathematics. Their letters broach Leibniz' claim to mathematical leadership, professional disputes between the brothers Jacob and Johann, and Fatio's theory of gravitation. Bernoulli's letters to teachers and friends, and business letters to Otto Mencke, publisher of Acta Eruditorum, shed further light on the until now little-researched life of Basel's famed mathematician.

Book excerpt: This book is a reference for librarians, mathematicians, and statisticians involved in college and research level mathematics and statistics in the 21st century. We are in a time of transition in scholarly communications in mathematics, practices which have changed little for a hundred years are giving way to new modes of accessing information. Where journals, books, indexes and catalogs were once the physical representation of a good mathematics library, shelves have given way to computers, and users are often accessing information from remote places. Part I is a historical survey of the past 15 years tracking this huge transition in scholarly communications in mathematics. Part II of the book is the bibliography of resources recommended to support the disciplines of mathematics and statistics. These are grouped by type of material. Publication dates range from the 1800's onwards. Hundreds of electronic resources-some online, both dynamic and static, some in fixed media, are listed among the paper resources. Amazingly a majority of listed electronic resources are free.
