This book was released on 2021-11-08 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ever since W.E.B. du Bois conceptualized slaves’ self-emancipation during the U.S. Civil War as a "general strike," the language of labor history has informed scholarly understandings of slavery. While the analogy of the plantation to the factory has its obvious limitations, historians have understood slaves and slaveholders as engaged in recognizable struggles over the speed of work, the ownership of time and expertise, and the informal rights and privileges that governed the labor process. However, an older materialist history rooted in marxist categories has not always succeeded in capturing the dynamics of racial dominance and human commodification at the heart of the American slave system. A "new history of capitalism" has offered one remedy, namely to embed slavery firmly within a capitalist mode of production whose investment in "free" labor was always more rhetorical than real. A different response may now be emerging through what scholars call "the new materialism"—an approach organized around human/non-human entanglements and drawing on recent theoretical work on things, networks, and assemblages. This talk considers the implications of this "new materialism" for the history of slavery, and by extension, for the field of labor history more generally.

Book Synopsis Defiled Trades and Social Outcasts by : Kathy Stuart
Download or read book Defiled Trades and Social Outcasts written by Kathy Stuart and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2000-05-04 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a social and cultural history of 'dishonourable people' (unehrliche Leute), an outcast group in early modern Germany. Executioners, skinners, grave-diggers, shepherds, barber-surgeons, millers, linen-weavers, sow-gelders, latrine-cleaners, and bailiffs were among the 'dishonourable' by virtue of their trades. This dishonour was either hereditary, often through several generations, or it arose from ritual pollution whereby honourable citizens could become dishonourable by coming into casual contact with members of the outcast group. The dishonourable milieu of the city of Augsburg from the sixteenth to the eighteenth centuries is reconstructed to show the extent to which dishonour determined the life-chances and self-identity of dishonourable people. The book then investigates how honourable estates interacted with dishonourable people, and how the pollution anxieties of early modern Germans structured social and political relations within honourable society.
Book Synopsis Islam in der Moderne, Moderne im Islam by :
Download or read book Islam in der Moderne, Moderne im Islam written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2018-04-10 with total page 627 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Festschrift brings together a range of scholars who congratulate Reinhard Schulze on the occasion of his 65th birthday, by shedding light and reflecting on the relation between Islam and modernity. Scholars from the fields of Islamic studies, religious studies, sociology and Arabic literature connect in various ways to Reinhard Schulze’s work to constructively criticize a Eurocentric understanding of modernity. The more specific aspects dealt with under the overarching topic of Islam and modernity make for the four thematic sections of this volume: the study of religion, Islam, and Islamic studies; Islamic knowledge cultures and normativity; language and literature as media of modernity; Islam and Islamic studies in the public sphere.
Download or read book Menschenrechte und ihre Kritiker written by Dieter Gosewinkel and published by Wallstein Verlag. This book was released on 2019-12-02 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
Book Synopsis Hundert Jahre sudeten-deutsche Geschichte by : Hans Henning Hahn
Download or read book Hundert Jahre sudeten-deutsche Geschichte written by Hans Henning Hahn and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2007 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
Book Synopsis International Communism and Transnational Solidarity: Radical Networks, Mass Movements and Global Politics, 1919–1939 by :
Download or read book International Communism and Transnational Solidarity: Radical Networks, Mass Movements and Global Politics, 1919–1939 written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2016-11-21 with total page 389 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an analysis of the articulation and organisation of radical international solidarity by organisations that were either connected to or had been established by the Communist International (Comintern), such as the International Red Aid, the International Workers’ Relief, the League Against Imperialism, the International of Seamen and Harbour Workers and the International Trade Union Committee of Negro Workers. The guiding light of these organisations was a radical interpretation of international solidarity, usually in combination with concepts and visions of gender, race and class as well as anti-capitalism, anti-imperialism, anti-colonialism and anti-fascism. All of these new transnational networks form a controversial part of the contemporary history of international organisations. Like the Comintern these international organisations had an ambigious character that does not fit nicely into the traditional typologies of international organisations as they were neither international governmental organisations nor international non-governmental organisations. They constituted a radical continuation of the pre-First World War Left and exemplified an attempt to implement the ideas and movements of a new type of radical international solidarity not only in Europe, but on a global scale. Contributors are: Gleb J. Albert, Bernhard H. Bayerlein, Kasper Braskén, Fredrik Petersson, Holger Weiss.
Book Synopsis Anti-Fascism in a Global Perspective by : Kasper Braskén
Download or read book Anti-Fascism in a Global Perspective written by Kasper Braskén and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-09-20 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book initiates a critical discussion on the varieties of global anti-fascism and explores the cultural, political and practical articulations of anti-fascism around the world. This volume brings together a group of leading scholars on the history of anti-fascism to provide a comprehensive analysis of anti-fascism from a transnational and global perspective and to reveal the abundance and complexity of anti-fascist ideas, movements and practices. Through a number of interlinked case studies, they examine how different forms of global anti-fascisms were embedded in various national and local contexts during the interwar period and investigate the interrelations between local articulations and the global movement. Contributions also explore the actions and impact of African, Asian, Latin American, Caribbean, and Middle Eastern anti-fascist voices that have often been ignored or rendered peripheral in international histories of anti-fascism. Aimed at a postgraduate student audience, this book will be useful for modules on the extreme right, political history, political thought, political ideologies, political parties, social movements, political regimes, global politics, world history and sociology. Chapters 5 and 10 of this book are freely available as downloadable Open Access PDFs at http://www.taylorfrancis.com under a Creative Commons Attribution-Non Commercial-No Derivatives (CC-BY-NC-ND) 4.0 license.
Download or read book Sinnformeln written by Susan Geideck and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2003 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Der Band enthält u. a. Beiträge von Brigitte Aulenbacher, Susan Geideck, Karsten Kassner, Josef Klein, Wolf-Andreas Liebert, Andreas Musolff, Tilla Siegel, Franc Wagner, Petra Wassermann und Martin Wengeler.

Book Synopsis Generational Shifts in Contemporary German Culture by : Laurel Cohen-Pfister
Download or read book Generational Shifts in Contemporary German Culture written by Laurel Cohen-Pfister and published by Camden House. This book was released on 2010 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The concept of the generation in today's German culture and literature, and its role in German identity. In the debates since 1945 on German history and culture, the concept of generations has become ever more prominent. Recent and ongoing shifts in how the various generations are seen -- and see themselves -- in relation to historyand to each other have taken on key importance in contemporary German cultural studies. The seismic events of twentieth-century German history are no longer solely first-generational lived experiences but are also historical moments seen through the eyes of successor generations. The generation, seen as a category of memory, thus holds a key to major shifts in German identity. The changing generational perspectives of German writers and filmmakers not onlyreflect but also influence these trends, exposing both the expected differences between generational views and unexpected continuities. Moreover, as younger artists reframe recent history, older generations like the 1968ers are also contributing to these shifts by reassessing their own experiences and cultural contributions. This volume of new essays applies current discourse on generations in German culture to contemporary works dealing with major sociohistorical events since the Nazi period. Contributors: Svea Bräunert, Laurel Cohen-Pfister, Friederike Eigler, Thomas C. Fox, Katharina Gerstenberger, Erin McGlothlin, Brad Prager, Ilka Rasch, Susanne Rinner, Caroline Schaumann, Maria Stehle, Reinhild Steingröver, Susanne Vees-Gulani. Laurel Cohen-Pfister is Associate Professor of German at Gettysburg College, and Susanne Vees-Gulani is Assistant Professor of German and Comparative Literature at Case Western Reserve University.
Book Synopsis Utopias in Nonfiction Film by : Simon Spiegel
Download or read book Utopias in Nonfiction Film written by Simon Spiegel and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-01-11 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Comprehensive and thorough, Utopias in Nonfiction Film takes a new direction in its surprise application to documentary that has the potential to shake up the field.'- Jane Gaines, Columbia University, USA 'Spiegel has introduced a new sub-genre to utopian studies, the documentary film. The book covers an impressive range of films, making the book one of the few truly international and comparative works in utopian studies.'- Lyman Tower Sargent, University of Missouri-St. Louis, USA "Simon Spiegel’s magisterial overview of utopian documentaries and nonfiction films is a treasure trove of information and unearths many forgotten and half-forgotten films, providing perceptive discussions of sidelined movies that deserve his (and our) critical scrutiny.“ - Eckart Voigts, University of Braunschweig – Institute of Technology, Germany This book is the first major study on utopias in nonfiction film. Since the publication of Thomas More’s Utopia more than 500 years ago, countless books have been written which describe a better world. But in film, positive utopias seem to be nonexistent. So far, research has focused almost exclusively on dystopias, since positive outlooks seem to run contrary to the media’s requirement. Utopias in Nonfiction Film takes a new approach; starting from the insight that literary utopias are first and foremost meant as a reaction to the ills of the present and not as entertaining stories, it looks at documentary and propaganda films, an area which so far has been completely ignored by research. Combining insights from documentary research and utopian studies, a vast and very diverse corpus of films is analysed. Among them are Zionist propaganda films, cinematic city utopias, socialist films of the future as well as web videos produced by the Islamist terrorist group ISIS.

Book Synopsis Multispecies Futures by : Roman Bartosch
Download or read book Multispecies Futures written by Roman Bartosch and published by Neofelis Verlag. This book was released on 2022-06-14 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In light of the dramatic growth and rapid institutionalization of human-animal studies in recent years, it is somewhat surprising that only a small number of publications have proposed practical and theoretical approaches to teaching in this inter- and transdisciplinary field. Featuring eleven original pedagogical interventions from the social sciences and the humanities as well as an epilogue from ecofeminist critic Greta Gaard, the present volume addresses this gap and responds to the demand by both educators and students for pedagogies appropriate for dealing with environmental crises. The theoretical and practical contributions collected here describe new ways of teaching human-animal studies in different educational settings and institutional contexts, suggesting how learners – equipped with key concepts such as agency or relationality – can develop empathy and ethical regard for the more-than-human world and especially nonhuman animals. As the contributors to this volume show, these cognitive and affective goals can be achieved in many curricula in secondary and tertiary education. By providing learners with the tools to challenge human exceptionalism in its various guises and related patterns of domination and exploitation in and outside the classroom, these interventions also contribute to a much-needed transformation not only of today's educational systems but of society as a whole. This volume is an invitation to beginners and experienced instructors alike, an invitation to (re)consider how we teach human-animal studies and how we could and should prepare learners for an uncertain future in, ideally, a more egalitarian and just multispecies world. With contributions by Roman Bartosch, Liza B. Bauer, Alexandra Böhm, Micha Gerrit Philipp Edlich, Greta Gaard, Björn Hayer, Andreas Hübner, Michaela Keck, Maria Moss, Jobst Paul, Mieke Roscher, Pamela Steen, and Nils Steffensen.

Book Synopsis Receptions of Paul in Early Christianity by : Jens Schröter
Download or read book Receptions of Paul in Early Christianity written by Jens Schröter and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2018-10-22 with total page 951 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The volume deals with interpretations of Paul, his person and his letters, in various early Christian writings. Some of those, written in the name of Paul, became part of the New Testament, others are included among „Ancient Christian Apocrypha", still others belong to the collection called „The Apostolic Fathers". Impacts of Paul are also discernible in early collections of his letters which became an important part of the New Testament canon. This process, resulting in the „canonical Paul", is also considered in this collection.
