In dem Sinne macht z.B. die Zeitschrift „Spiegel“ die Inquisition verantwortlich für das Blutvergießen an bis zu einer Million Hexen. Dabei ist gar nicht zutreffend, dass die Hexenverfolgung eine Erscheinung des „finsteren Mittelalters“ darstellt – schließlich begannen die panikartigen Reaktionen auf etwaige Teufelsangehörige und Hexen erst im 15. Jahrhundert und erreichten ihren Höhepunkt etwa zwischen 1560 und 1720. Dies ist insofern nicht unbedeutend, als dass man auf Grund dessen Ecos Darstellung von einem hexenjagenden Inquisitor als fiktiven Anachronismus zurückweisen muss! Der Glaube an Hexen, die als teuflische Sekte Schadenszauber betrieben, entstand erst um 1430, also rund ein Jahrhundert nach der Zeit, in der Eco seine Handlung spielen lässt. Gui verhängte in der Realität niemals ein Todesurteil wegen Zauberei oder Hexerei! Tatsächlich hören wir von einem anderen Zeitgenossen Positives über inquisitorisches Verhalten: „Jedenfalls sehen die Italiener und Spanier, die anscheinend von Natur aus mehr dazu veranlagt sind, diese Dinge zu bedenken und zu überlegen, welch unzählbare Menge Unschuldiger sie hinrichten müssten, wenn sie die Deutschen nachahmen wollten. Darum lassen sie es mit Recht sein und überlassen dies Geschäft, Hexen zu verbrennen, uns [Deutschen]." Verwirrende Worte, behauptet der Jesuit und Gegner der Hexenprozesse Friedrich von Spee damit, dass ausgerechnet in den von der Inquisition kontrollierten Ländern Spanien und Italien weniger Hexenverfolgungen betrieben würden. Daraus resultiert die Frage, inwiefern der niemals in Spanien oder Italien gewesene Spee mit seiner Behauptung Recht hatte. Ergo besteht die Aufgabe der vorliegenden Hausarbeit darin, den tatsächlichen Umgang der Römischen Inquisition mit den Hexenvorstellungen und -verfolgungen näher zu beleuchten.

What roles did the emerging 'state', the professions of clerics and jurists, and the public involved play in each case? And how could this project be completed? From a sociological point of view, the findings of recent international research on witches provide a model of a more general, highly ambivalent, 'pastoral' attitude, according to which a shepherd has to care for the welfare of his flock as well as for its erring sheep. The first main part describes the clerical initial situation, which developed the 'Dominican' demonological model of witchcraft on the basis of the still dominant magico-religious mentality in the 15th century. A model, according to the second part of the book, which then in the course of the 16th century in Western Europe increasingly fell into the hands of the not so innocent jurists. From there it developed into a legal witch persecution that realized the early European witch model from the village witch to the mass persecutions to the late child witches. The third part describes how witch persecutions slowly became less important towards the end of the 17th century as a general witchcraft 'politics' game in the transition from a confessional state to a (court) 'civil service' state.

So how then, asks Moshe Sluhovsky, were practitioners of exorcism to distinguish demonic from divine possessions?
