It is also obvious that the struggle against the politics of apartheid in South Africa was strongly supported by initiatives of churchy and other religious groups referring to the Human Rights. Christian churches and other religious groups do still play an important role in the post-apartheid South Africa. They have a public voice concerning all the challenges with which the multiethnic and economically still deeply divided South African society is faced with. The reflections on these questions in the collected lectures and essays of this volume derive from an academic discourse between German and South African scholars that took place within the German-South African Year of Science 2012/13.

Heute allerdings verliert der Glaube an Bedeutung und ein fest etabliertes Reglement, wie es die Religion zu fruheren Zeiten war, scheint nicht mehr existent zu sein. Doch ergab es sich im Jahre 1789, dass die Prinzipien der Franzosischen Revolution schriftlich fixiert wurden und fortan eine globale Ordnung bedingen sollten, indem sie zum Kernbestand des Menschenrechtsethos wurden. Fur Durkheim war klar, das Freiheit, Gleichheit und Bruderlichkeit, der Kult des Individuums" im Spiegel der Zeit und des sozialen Wandels aktualisiert werden mussten. Gerade deshalb verwies er immer wieder auf die Menschenrechte als Religion. Diese haben die selben Funktionen wie Religion und konnen somit auch zur sozialen Ordnung beitragen. Das teilweise Fehlen dieser Ordnung bzw. die Pathologien, wie Durkheim sie nannte, stammen aus zu schnellen sozialen Wandel. Die Entwicklung der organischen Arbeitsteilung hinke demnach der Modernisierung der Gesellschaft nach, was nichts anderes bedeutet, als dass die bereits bestehenden kulturellen Grundlagen der modernen Gesellschaft noch nicht vollstandig etabliert sind. Dennoch kann man die Menschenrechte als sakularisierte Religion sehen, die nach ihrer endgultigen globalen Etablierung, die wie man immer wieder sieht, noch lange nicht vollendet ist, wohl in der Lage sein werden eine soziale Ordnung einzurichten und sich selbst zu reproduzieren. Dies kann geschehen, wenn die Menschenrechte weltweit gerechtfertigt werden und somit legitimiert werden. Hierfur mussen sie sich in der Praxis bewahren und in die Traditionen der Volker Einzug finden.
