Jahrhunderts, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Heute gilt das wiedervereinigte Deutschland weithin als demokratischer und pluralistischer Staat, der auch Vorbildwirkung für sich demokratisierende Länder besitzt. Obwohl Pluralismus und Demokratie sich seit dem Wirken Fraenkels also anscheinend bewährt und durchgesetzt haben, stoßen sie bei Teilen der deutschen Bevölkerung trotzdem auf Ablehnung. So stimmen laut einer aktuellen Studie der Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung ein Viertel der Deutschen (26%) der Aussage zu, dass Deutschland momentan eine einzige starke Partei als Verkörperung der Volksgemeinschaft brauche. Eine derartige Einstellung entspricht jedoch eher dem Wunsch nach Vermassung in einer Diktatur, als der Akzeptanz demokratischer Meinungsvielfalt. Antipluralistisches Denken scheint in Deutschland also immer noch verankert zu sein, obgleich das politische System funktioniert. Auf Grund dieser und der Tatsache, dass Fraenkel bereits vor über 30 Jahren gestorben ist, lässt sich durchaus die Frage nach der Aktualität seiner pluralistischen Demokratietheorie stellen. Inwieweit entspricht die heutige Bundesrepublik den Kriterien dieser Theorie? Werden ihre normativen Vorgaben noch angestrebt oder ist die deutsche Demokratie gar nicht auf deren Umsetzung angewiesen? Gibt es vielleicht Entwicklungen oder Bedingungen der Demokratie, um die Fraenkels Konzeption erweitert werden müsste? Die vorliegende Hausarbeit soll versuchen einige dieser Fragen zu beantworten, indem sie die normativen Voraussetzungen und Kriterien der Theorie mit den empirischen Zuständen der bundesdeutschen Demokratie vergleicht. Im Allgemeinen mag solch ein Vergleich von gewünschter und tatsächlich vorhandener politischer Ordnung als recht schwierig erscheinen, da Fraenkel aber „seine theoretischen Einschätzungen (...) aus der deskriptiven Bestandsaufnahme heraus“ entwickelte, sollte es möglich sein, diesen Vorgang im Prinzip umzukehren und die Theorie auf die aktuell bestehenden Verhältnisse zu beziehen. Die Vorgehensweise sieht dabei im Folgenden so aus, dass zuerst die pluralistische Demokratiekonzeption Fraenkels dargestellt und diese anschließend auf ihre empirische Entsprechung überprüft wird. Zum besseren Verständnis der Theorie erfolgt zu Beginn eine kurze Erläuterung ihrer Entstehung.

The term became more prominent only after World War II. Kaufmann, the doyen of the sociology of social policy in Germany, argues that „social policy“ responds to the modern disjunction between “state” and “society” diagnosed by the German philosopher Hegel. Hegel’s disciple Lorenz von Stein saw social policy as a means to pacify the capitalist class conflict. After World War II, social policy expanded in an unprecedented way, changing its character in the process. Social policy turned from class politics into a policy for the whole population, with new concepts – like "social security", "redistribution" and "quality of life" - and new overarching formulas, "social market economy" and "social state" (the German version of “welfare state”). Both formulas have remained indeterminate and contested, indicating the inherent openness of the idea of the “social”.

Most of the approaches in sociology of religion are prone to emphasize either processes of religious decline or of religious upswing. For example, secularization theory usually includes a couple of relevant factors--such as functional differentiation, economic affluence or social equality--in order to account for religious change. However, the result of such a theory's empirical analyses seems to be certain in advance, namely that the social relevance of religion is decreasing. In contrast, the religious market model devised by sociologists of religion in the US is inclined to detect everywhere processes of religious upsurge. Religion and Modernity: An International Comparison avoids a purely theoretically based perspective on religious changes. For this reason, Detlef Pollack and Gergely Rosta do not begin with theoretical propositions but with questions. The authors raise the question of how the social significance of religion in its various facets has changed in modern societies, and explain what factors and conditions have contributed to these changes.
