The work as we have it is no more than an unfinished, fragmentary realization of the artist's original conception. Speculation about its meaning began quite early, for Michelangelo's contemporaries were apparently no better informed than we. An interpretation made by Benedetto Varchi in 1549 & since universally accepted, was by his own admission a personal opinion, not confirmed by the artist. In the 16th century, interpretations quite at variance with modern scholarly assumptions were made. Here, Dr. Edith Balas contends that the artist deliberately veiled his meaning in obscurity, making his images, like the language of Neoplatonic philosophers, intelligible only to an intellectual elite. Assuming the role of the Magus, Michelangelo conceived a cryptic, magical world of potent allegorical images designed not simply or primarily to commemorate the departed Medici but to help achieve elevation for their souls. Über die riesige Fläche von 1000 m2 entfaltete er hier seine ganze Genialität. Als er die Arbeit im Auftrag von Papst Klemens VII. (1478 bis 1534) aufnahm, war er gerade mal 34 Jahre alt. In seinem letzten Gemälde, dem Jüngsten Gericht an der Wand der Sixtinischen Kapelle, ließ er seinen eigenen Qualen freien Lauf. Was bedeuteten künstlerische Gesetze und Konventionen im Vergleich zu dem Schmerz, der in seinem Inneren tobte und ein Ventil brauchte? Kein Wunder, dass seine Zeitgenossen den Ausdruck terribilità auf seinen Stil anwandten. Seine Figuren entführen uns in Gefilde der Phantasie, die weit über das hinausgehen, was wir normalerweise mit ihrem Namen verbinden.

The ten essays written for this volume address the experience of art in early modern Europe and approach it from a variety of methodological perspectives: concerns range from the relation between its perceptual and significative dimensions to the ways in which its discursive formation anticipates but does not exactly correspond to later notions of 'aesthetic' experience. The modes of engagement vary from careful empirical studies that explore the complex complementary relationship between works of art and textual evidence of different kinds to ambitious efforts to mobilize the powerful interpretative tools of psychoanalysis and phenomenology. This diversity testifies to the vitality of current interest in the experience of beholding and the urgency of the challenge it poses to contemporary art-historical practice.
