Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The papers in the present volume come from contributions presented at Networks 88,the 9th International Meeting of the Polymer Networks Group. The publication of papers from this meeting follows a tradition started ten years ago, in 1979.As usual with meetings of the Polymer Networks Group, the conference was a very active one and covered a broad range of topics, including a particular emphasis on biological and reversible networks and gelation, as well as an emphasis on covalent networks. The present papers are concerned principally with covalent networks and network -forming systems. The papers relating to biological and reversible systems are being published separately under the editorship of W. Burchard and S. B. Ross -Murphy. In editing this volume, I have attempted to arrange papers broadly according to topics, although some overlap inevitably occurs. Thus, papers 1 -6 deal with experimental and theoretical studies relating, quantitatively, network formation reactions and formation conditions with the structure and properties of the resulting networks. Papers 7 -9 deal with gelation and investigations of the critical regime. Both these areas are rapidly gaining in importance in present-day research. Papers10 - 13 deal with experimental investigations of already -formed networks, whilst papers 14 -19 relate to new and varied theoretical approaches to rubber elasticity and the behaviour of chains in networks. The volume concludes with papers 20 and 21 on the preparation of new network materials. On behalf of the Polymer Networks Group, I would like to thank the Organising Committee for a stimulating Networks 88 and the authors of the present papers for their excellent contributions and prompt preparation of the manuscripts. The papers give a good reflection of the range of topics now actively researched in the well -established yet still -expanding field of covalent network polymers. I would particularly thank Karel Dad: and Ole Kramer for their invaluable assistance in helping to prepare this volume. My thanks are also due to Rolf Bareiss of "Die Makromolekulare Chemie" for this enthusiasm, for his editorial preparation of the papers, and for keeping the whole excercise on schedule.
