(Dr. Hansjürgen Kotzur) Die Kreuzzüge sind ein wesentliches und düsteres Thema in der Geschichte der Kirche, aber auch der westlichen Kultur im Allgemeinen. Sie bestimmten zwischen 1095 und 1500 die Gedanken und Gefühle der Einwohner Westeuropas maßgeblich, denn immerhin wurde über Jahrhunderte eine enorme kriegerische Energie aufgeboten, um die heiligen Stätten in Palästina zu erobern bzw. zu sichern. Zwar ist die Zeit der Kreuzzüge seit knapp achthundert Jahren vorbei, doch die eingeschliffenen Feindbilder halten sich hartnäckig in den Köpfen und verhindern einen offenen und toleranten Umgang miteinander. Um nur ein Beispiel zu nennen - der mittlerweile verstorbene Papst Johannes Paul II. wurde am 12. Mai 1981 bei einem Attentat durch den Türken Mehmet Ali Agca schwer verletzt. Die Begründung des Täters war die, dass der Papst der "oberste Kriegsherr der Kreuzritter" sei. Dabei war gerade Papst Johannes Paul II. derjenige, der Anfang Mai 2001 in Athen öffentlich für die Verbrechen von Katholiken während der Kreuzzüge und insbesondere für die Plünderung von Konstantinopel im Jahr 1204 um Vergebung bat. Heute tritt die (katholische) Kirche ausdrücklich als Friedensorganisation und als Gegner von Gewalt zur Konfliktlösung auf, was in jüngster Vergangenheit an der entschiedenen Ablehnung des Irak-Krieges der USA zu sehen war. Gerade dieser wird desöfteren als Amerikas "Kreuzzug" bezeichnet, wohl auch deshalb, weil Präsident Bush sich permanent auf Gott beruft. Somit dient uns der vorliegende Brief als schriftliches Exempel für Bernhards predigtartige Aufrufe zum Kreuzzug. Ich werde im Rahmen dieser Arbeit den historischen Kontext und die näheren Umstände darlegen, die Bernhard dazu veranlaßten, in dieser entschiedenen Weise für den Kreuzzug einzutreten. Von Interesse ist in diesem Zusammenhang auch, inwiefern es des Abtes eines durchaus bekannten aber dennoch einfachen Klosters in Burgund bedurfte, das erst wenige Jahre zuvor gegründet worden war und bei weitem nicht den mit Abteien wie Fleury, Saint-Denis oder Cluny vergleichbaren Einfluß hatte, um die Begeisterung für den Zweiten Kreuzzug in ganz Europa zu entfachen. Es liegt also die Vermutung nahe, daß die Person Bernhards eine nähere Betrachtung erfordert, um die Zusammenhänge der wieder aufkommenden Kreuzzugsbewegung zu verstehen. Hierbei dient die Vita Prima, die erste Biographie Bernhards, die von berühmten Zeitgenossen wie Wilhelm von St. Thierry bereits zu seinen Lebzeiten begonnen und unmittelbar nach seinem Tod fertiggestellt worden ist, als maßgebliche Quelle. Zunächst ist allerdings die Entstehung des Kreuzzugsgedankens im Hochmittelalter im allgemeinen zu beleuchten und somit in aller Kürze die Frage zu klären, warum gerade in jener Zeit eine solche alle gesellschaftlichen, politischen und klerikalen Schichten umfassende europäische Bewegung entstand. Auch ist in diesem Zusammenhang zu untersuchen, was wir genau unter einem Kreuzzug zu verstehen haben und was ihn qua definitionem von einem gewöhnlichen Kriegszug unterscheidet. Einen ausführlichen Abschnitt nimmt darauffolgend die Analyse der Epistula 363 ein, in der Bernhard vehement für die Beteiligung am Kreuzzug wirbt. Das Ergebnis seiner Predigten war ein enormes Aufflammen der nahezu erloschenen Kreuzzugsbegeisterung und das Aufbrechen zum Zweiten Kreuzzug, der jedoch als desaströser Mißerfolg endete, was nicht ohne Folgen für das christliche Europa und vor allem für seine Urheber – in erster Linie Bernhard selbst– blieb.

Book excerpt: The German Enlightenment and the Rise of Historicism traces the thought of a large and neglected group of German thinkers and their encounter with the ideas and ideal of the Enlightenment from 1740 to 1790. Concentrating on the nature of their historical consciousness, Peter Hanns Reill addresses two basic issues in the interpretation of the Enlightenment: to what degree can one speak of the unity of the Enlightenment and to what extent can the Enlightenment be characterized as “modern”? Reill attempts to revise the traditional interpretation of the Enlightenment as an age insensitive to the postulates of modern historical thought and to dissolve the alleged opposition of the Enlightenment to later intellectual developments such as Idealism. He argues that German Enlightened thinkers generated the general presuppositions upon which modern historical thought is founded. Asserting that the Enlightenment was not a unitary movement, Reill shows how each phase of it had unique elements and made contributions to Enlightenment thought as a whole. Exploring the forms of thought, the mental climate, and the different intellectual milieus in which the German thinkers operated, Reill demonstrates that they were confronted by two opposing intellectual traditions: German Pietism and rationalism. In attempting to reconcile both without submerging one into the other, these Enlightenment thinkers turned to historical speculation and learning. They discussed the relation between religious and rationalistic assumptions, the transformation of the concepts of religion and law, the interaction between aesthetic and historical thought, the creation of a theory of understanding to support the new idea of history, the use of causation in historical analysis, and the rediscovery of the Middle Ages. Reill reveals how they anticipated the work of more famous thinkers of the nineteenth century and establishes the conceptual similarities between thinkers generally thought to be more different than alike.
