Es dauerte nur unterschiedlich lange Zeit sie herzustellen. Von den mühsam in Holzplatten geschnittenen, auf Papier abgeriebenen und handkolorierten Einblattdrucken des 15. Jahrhunderts bis zu unseren in Sekundenschnelle hergestellten Farb-Kopien auf dem Bürodrucker. Vorher waren Bilder auf Kirchen, Klöster und Adelshäuser beschränkt. Die aufwändige Buchmalerei konnte nur ebenso aufwändig durch eifrige Kopisten vervielfältigt werden. Die rasche Verbreitung des Buchdrucks ab 1450 ersetzte die handgemalten Kopien durch gedruckte Bilder. Das kostbare Pergament wurde durch das einfacher herzustellende, billigere Papier verdrängt. Buchdruck und Papier und der Entdeckergeist der Renaissancekünstler, die neue graphische Bildtechniken fanden, schufen eine neue Bilderwelt für eine breitere Schicht. Aller graphischen Kunst ist eines gemeinsam: Sie will mehrere idente Stücke eines Bildes schaffen: ob als Heiligenbild, wissenschaftliche Illustration, aktuelles politisches Statement, Landschaftsdarstellung, Banknote, Briefmarke oder einfach nur ein Bild für viele. Ob als Holzschnitt, Kupferstich, Radierung, Stahlstich, Lithographie, Offset, Siebdruck oder Digitaldruck.
