Book Synopsis Dinosaur Tracks 2011 by : Annette Richter
Download or read book Dinosaur Tracks 2011 written by Annette Richter and published by Universitätsverlag Göttingen. This book was released on 2012 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Early Cretaceous (late Berriasian) Bückeberg Formation in the southern Lower Saxony Basin, to the west and to the south of Hannover, yields abundant and diverse dinosaur tracks, known since the late 1870s. After a few decades of pioneering and discovery, this area was scientifically neglected for a long time concerning dinosaur tracks and tracksites, and only single sporadic finds were reported in the second half of the 20th century. During 2007 and 2008, a new tracksite was discovered in Obernkirchen, yielding an astonishing amount of new and well-preserved dinosaur tracks, cared for by the Hannover State Museum and its cooperational partners. The present volume contains the abstracts of lectures and posters presented during the Dinosaur Track Symposium 2011 as well as excursion and collection guides. On behalf of the Schaumburger Landschaft, this symposium was held at the medieval Stift Obernkirchen, Germany, from April 14th to 17th, 2011. Nearly one hundred palaeontologists, biologists, geologists and other scientists from sixteen countries participated. Abstract Volume and Field Guide to Excursions from the International Symposium, Obernkirchen, April 14-17, 2011

Download or read book Genericity written by Alda Mari and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2012-12-20 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an up-to-date introduction to the study of generics and pursues the enterprise of the influential Generic Book edited by Gregory Carlson and Jeffry Pelletier, which was published in 1995. Genericity is a key notion in the study of human cognition as it reveals our capacity to organize our perceived reality into classes and to describe regularities. The generic can be expressed at the level of a word or phrase (ie the potato in The Irish economy became dependent upon the potato) or an entire sentence (eg in John smokes a cigar after dinner, the generic aspect is a property of the expression, rather than any single word or phrase within it). This book gathers new work from senior and young researchers to reconsider the notion of genericity, examining the distinct contributions made by the determiner phrase (eg the notions of kind/individual) and the verbal predicate (eg the notions of permanency, disposition, ability, habituality, and plurality). Finally, in connection with the whole sentence, the analytic/synthetic distinction is discussed as well as the notion of normality. The book will appeal to both students and scholars in linguistics, philosophy and cognitive science

Book Synopsis African Dinosaurs Unearthed by : Gerhard Maier
Download or read book African Dinosaurs Unearthed written by Gerhard Maier and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2003-07-02 with total page 427 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From 1907 to 1931 at Tendaguru, a remote site in present-day Tanzania, teams of German (and later British) paleontologists unearthed 220 tons of fossils, including the bones of a new dinosaur, one of the largest then known. For decades the mounted skeleton of this giant, Brachiosaurus, was the largest skeleton of a land animal on exhibit in the world. The dinosaur and other animal fossils found at Tendaguru form one of the cornerstones of our understanding of life in the Mesozoic era. Visited sporadically during the '30s and '40s, Tendaguru again became the site of scientific interest late in the 20th century. African Dinosaurs Unearthed tells the story of driven scientific adventurers working under difficult conditions and often paying the price with their health—and sometimes with their lives. Set against the background of a troubled century, the book reveals how scientific endeavors were carried on through war and political turmoil, and continue into the present day.

Book Synopsis American Dinosaur Abroad by : Ilja Nieuwland
Download or read book American Dinosaur Abroad written by Ilja Nieuwland and published by University of Pittsburgh Press. This book was released on 2019-04-30 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In early July 1899, an excavation team of paleontologists sponsored by Andrew Carnegie discovered the fossil remains in Wyoming of what was then the longest and largest dinosaur on record. Named after its benefactor, the Diplodocus carnegii—or Dippy, as it’s known today—was shipped to Pittsburgh and later mounted and unveiled at the Carnegie Museum of Natural History in 1907. Carnegie’s pursuit of dinosaurs in the American West and the ensuing dinomania of the late nineteenth century coincided with his broader political ambitions to establish a lasting world peace and avoid further international conflict. An ardent philanthropist and patriot, Carnegie gifted his first plaster cast of Dippy to the British Museum at the behest of King Edward VII in 1902, an impulsive diplomatic gesture that would result in the donation of at least seven reproductions to museums across Europe and Latin America over the next decade, in England, Germany, France, Austria, Italy, Russia, Argentina, and Spain. In this largely untold history, Ilja Nieuwland explores the influence of Andrew Carnegie’s prized skeleton on European culture through the dissemination, reception, and agency of his plaster casts, revealing much about the social, political, cultural, and scientific context of the early twentieth century.
