In sechs Kapiteln seiner "Meditationes de Prima Philosophia" erarbeitet er, was wir wirklich als wahr annehmen können und liefert einen Ansatz, welcher apriorisch auskommen soll. Zwei seiner Meditationen kommen mit der Ausarbeitung der Gottesbeweise eine eminente Wichtigkeit zu. Sie verkörpern neben dem "Cogito" Grundlage für folgende aber auch vorangegangene Urteile Descartes'. Wie das möglich ist, soll sich durch meine Ausführungen in dieser Arbeit als Nebenprodukt zeigen. Die philosophische Debatte über Gott ist seit einigen Jahren wiedereröffnet und aktueller denn je und schon Theodor W. Adorno wusste, dass "wohl eine jede Philosophie um den ontologischen Gottesbeweis [kreise]". Auf diese Form des Beweises soll sich diese Arbeit konzentrieren. Bereits Anselm von Canterbury verschrieb sich dem Versuch, das Dasein Gottes zu beweisen, indem er "ihn" als das vollkommenste Wesen, über das nichts Größeres gedacht werden kann, beschrieb. Auch Descartes entwirft einen ontologischen Gottesbeweis, welchen ich in dieser Arbeit zu prüfen ersuche. Inwiefern kann sein Gottesbeweis unbezweifelbar sein? Um diese Frage hinreichend beantworten zu können, muss natürlich zunächst der Descartessche Beweis näher beleuchtet und auf bereits bekannte Kritiken eingegangen werden. Da "Ich denke, also bin ich" den introspektiven Ausgangspunkt seines Denkens verkörpert, wird auch die Bedeutung dieses Ausspruchs im Sinne des Gottesbeweises Zuwendung finden.

Es folgt die Darstellung der Positionen von Thomas von Aquin, Immanuel Kant, Richard Swinburne, Robert Meyer, Werner Gitt und Michael Drosnin. Im Anschluss werden die Gottesbeweise ablehnenden Positionen Johannes Calvins, Blaise Pascals, Baruch de Spinozas, Johann Gottlieb Fichtes und Ludwig Wittgensteins dargestellt. Im nächsten Schritt werden alle gezeigten Standpunkte beurteilt. An diese Darstellung und Würdigung der bedeutendsten Gottesbeweise der letzten neun Jahrhunderte schließt sich eine die Arbeit abschließende theologische Würdigung des anselmschen „Beweises“ an, die seinen speziellen Kontext berücksichtigt, durch den er sich von den anderen Beweisgängen deutlich unterscheidet, und seine Relevanz für die heutige Arbeit in Theologie und Kirche herausstellt.
