Bereits der polnische Sozialanthropologe Bronislaw Malinowski bemerkte dies, indem er auf die affektstabilisierende Wirkung religiöser Praktiken hinwies. Beispielsweise lässt ein Ritual vor einer längeren Schiffsfahrt die Seeleute eine gewisse Zuversicht empfinden, sodass sie auf ihre sichere Heimkehr vertrauen können. Roy Rappaport, ein Anthropologe aus den USA, erkannte als Funktion der Religion die Regelung gesellschaftlichen und ökologischen Gleichgewichts. Seine Untersuchungen eines Ritualzyklus in Neuguinea ergaben, dass die Opferung der Hausschweine von ihrer Anzahl abhängig ist. Sind es zu viele, werden sie geopfert, doch nur, wenn sie gleichzeitig bei niedriger Population geschützt werden. Im Ritual, das ein fester Teil der Religion ist, wird also der Bestand der Hausschweine reguliert. An diese funktionalen Ansätze knüpft der kognitive und strukturale Ansatz an, der Religion als Abbild menschlichen Handelns und zugleich als Vorbild dafür versteht. „Religionen halten aus dieser Perspektive die Kategorien bereit, mit denen Menschen ihre Gesellschaft schaffen“ (Heidemann 2011: 188, 189). Heidemann führt als Bespiel die religiös erklärten Speisevorschriften an. Diese lassen Statusgruppen und Schichten entstehen und bilden Gemeinschaften. Anders gesagt: eine Gruppe von Menschen wird von einer anderen getrennt und entwickelt eine eigene, ganz spezielle Identität In dieser Arbeit wird es um die Anfänge des funktionalistischen Ansatzes gehen, um die ersten Schritte hin zur Auffassung der Religion als menschliche Institution mit einer Funktion für die Gesellschaft. Wegbereiter für diesen Ansatz war unter anderem Émile Durkheim. Seine Theorie zum Religionsbegriff, sowie zur Bedeutung von Religion wird auf den folgenden Seiten beleuchtet und erklärt.

His work and the central themes in his research are the starting point in World Views and Worldly Wisdom. No less than eighteen leading international researchers put different aspects of his work in the spotlight. A recurring theme, however, is the attraction and repulsion between the Roman Catholic Church and modernity in Europe between 1750 and 2000. The ambivalent relationship with modernity is therefore the leitmotiv of the first part of this volume, whereas the second part focuses on the repositioning of the Church and the tensions between religion, ideology and politics. As in other contested fields, emotions are often one-sidedly discussed as quintessentially subjective and individual phenomena, neglecting their social and cultural constitution. Moreover, emotionality in these debates is frequently attributed to the religious subject alone, disregarding the affective anatomy of the secular. This volume addresses these shortcomings, bringing into conversation a variety of disciplinary perspectives on religious and secular affect and emotion. The volume emphasizes two analytical perspectives: on the one hand, chapters take an immanent perspective, focusing on subjective feelings and emotions in relation to the religious and the secular. On the other hand, chapters take a relational perspective, looking at the role of affect and emotion in how the religious and the secular constitute one another. These perspectives cut across the three main parts of the volume: the first one addressing historical intertwinements of religion and emotion, the second part emphasizing affects, emotions, and religiosity, and the third part looking at specific sensibilities of the secular. Im Griechi-schen als Gegensatz zu genos, das auf verwandtschaftliche Verhältnisse zielt, bezeichnet ethnos eher an kulturellen Faktoren orientiert die nicht-griechischen Staaten ausserhalb der polis. Dieser hier schon angedeutete Gegensatz von verwandtschaftlichen und kulturellen Un-terschieden wird bis heute diskutiert, wenn es darum geht, Ethnizität in verwandtschaftliche oder kulturelle Zusammenhänge zu rücken. Die ethymologischen Wurzeln können dabei viel-leicht als Inspiration, aber wohl nicht als schlagkräftiges Argument zur Bestimmung von Eth-nizität gesehen werden, denn dann müssten einige Worte nachträglich in ihrer Bedeutung kor-rigiert werden, weil ursprünglich etwas Anderes gemeint war. In den einschlägigen Kultur-kreisen, zwar nicht grob, anfangs aber doch unterschiedlich konnotiert, stilisiert sichEthnizität heute als ein Phänomen in den Wissenschaften, dass sehr weit und realtiv beliebig definiert werden kann. Im Französischen eher als Bezeichnung für sogenannte primitive Kulturen ausserhalb Frankreichs im anthropologischen Sinne verwendet, entwickelte sich im anglopho-nen Raum, vor allem in den USA als Einwanderungsland, ein territorial nach innen gerichte-tes Verständnis von Ethnizität, das zuerst auf die weissen Einwanderergruppen dort verwen-det wurde. Aber spätestens mit dem sogenannten Ethnic Revival in den sechziger und siebzi-ger Jahren wurde Ethnizität ein populäres Konzept für die gesamte Gesellschaft. Ein Blick auf die Sowjetunion bringt nichts anderes zutage was nicht zu vermuten wäre, nämlich einen sehr isolierten Blick auf das Phänomen und einen Begriff etnos, der angesichts der Nationalitäten-politik in der Sowjetunion, die auch durch diesen Begriff geprägt war, als sehr willkürlich er-scheint. Im deutschsprachigen Raum ist durch die spezielle Problematik der Auswirkungen des Nationalsozialismus eine sehr unstabile Semantik ethnischer Begriffe entstanden. Der an-gelsächsische Begriff hat sich in den letzten zwei Jahrzehnten also durchgesetzt.
