Die erste, kürzere Fassung der ›Anmerkungen‹, beginnend wohl im Winter 1771/72, schrieb Lenz für die "Société de Philosophie et Belles Lettres" in Straßburg und wurde seitdem von ihm mehrfach überarbeitet und ergänzt. Unterstützt durch Goethe veröffentlichte er sie schließlich 1774, zusammen mit einer Übertragung von Shakespeares Komödie "Love ́s Labour ́s Lost" im Anhang unter dem Titel "Amor vincit omnia". Allerdings fallen die als eine der wichtigsten dramentheoretischen Schriften anzusehenden ›Anmerkungen übers Theater‹ bereits bei der Art der Darbietung ganz aus dem Rahmen des Gewohnten. Inhalt, das methodische und gedankliche Verfahren, der Stil und die Sprechweise der ›Anmerkungen‹ werfen Fragen auf. Nicht in logisch-systematisch gegliederte Sinnabschnitte oder Paragraphen, die einen übersichtlichen Aufbau und klare Grundthesen erkennen ließen, teilt Lenz seinen Text auf, sondern "rhapsodienweis" , scheinbar nur assoziativ miteinander verknüpft trägt er seinen Thesen vor.
