Book Synopsis Language in the Public Space by : Holger Schmitt
Download or read book Language in the Public Space written by Holger Schmitt and published by . This book was released on 2018-06-07 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As soon as we leave our private sphere, we are surrounded by a multitude of written messages in various shapes and forms: billboards, shop names, regulatory signs ('STOP'), memorial plaques, messages on clothing, graffiti and many others. In short, we enter a 'Linguistic Landscape' (LL). Language in the public space, however, often follows very different patterns from most other written texts. It tends to be, for example, syntactically simple, pragmatically right to the point, highly creative, visually oriented and multilingual. LL studies are still a fairly young discipline, with an unsettled research agenda and many questions still open. This introduction approaches language in the public space from a wide variety of linguistic perspectives. It covers some of the well-established topics like multilingualism and aspects of semiotics, but goes far beyond them. Features studied include names, writing systems, grammar, dialect and potential applications for language teaching. Each of the main chapters concludes with a series of questions for reflection or independent research as well as a number of suggestions for further reading. Two hundred b/w photographs provide rich illustration. - Holger Schmitt is a linguist (MA, PhD, Habilitation) who taught English Linguistics at various German universities (Koblenz-Landau, Bonn, Karlsruhe, Wuppertal, Konstanz). His areas of specialisation are sociolinguistics, phonetics and phonology, and educational linguistics.

Download or read book Un/Covering the North written by Valerie Alia and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2011-11-01 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite setbacks and cutbacks, Canada leads the world in northern and Aboriginal communications. This book provides a comprehensive survey of communications in the circumpolar region, focusing on the Canadian Arctic and sub-Arctic but also looking at the circumpolar North (Alaska, Siberia, Greenland, and the Nordic/Saami nations). Radio, television, magazines, newspapers, and web sites are all covered. As technologies and access improve, Aboriginal people are increasingly taking control of their own representation and consolidating their presence in northern media. Alia concludes that Canada will maintain its leadership in northern communications in the years ahead, given the topic's far-reaching importance and international context.

Download or read book Names, Numbers, and Northern Policy written by Valerie Alia and published by Halifax, N.S. : Fernwood. This book was released on 1994 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Names are the cornerstones of cultures. They identify individuals, represent life, express and embody power. When power is unequal and people are colonized at one level or another, naming is manipulated form the outside. In the Canadian North, the most blatant example of this manipulation is the long history of interference by visitors with the ways to Inuit named themselves and their land. This book is a concise history of government-sponsored interference with Inuit identity.

Although detailed and full bibliographies exist for Old English word studies, this is the first specifically on Middle English lexicography, focussing on studies of individual Middle English words and groups of words which offer evidence for word meanings: ante- and post-datings for the Oxford English Dictionary and the Middle English Dictionary, missing entries and ghost words, possible proverbs, proposals for etymologies, wordplay, punning, new readingsin manuscripts and the reinterpretations of textual cruces. It first presents an annotated bibliography arranged alphabetically by author's name and date of publication; the annotations include notes on the contents and approach of each article, cross-references to related work, and references to reviews. Two indexes follow, the Index of Words, an alphabetical listing of words that have attracted significant discussion with references to the author(s), publication date and notes of pages on which the words are discussed; and an Index of Authors.
