Book excerpt: This book looks at atonement biblically, theologically, historically, and sacramentally. Biblically it is tied to Scripture’s narrative of humanity’s failure to fulfill God’s intention and God’s subsequent covenant with Abraham fulfilled in Jesus. Theologically, in Jesus the eternal Logos became incarnate to fulfill God’s intention to deal with sin and begin again with a new creation. Jesus’ death was not a payment for anything to anyone! It was the Triune God’s non-violent way of absorbing, defeating, and overcoming sin and death for the world. Two chapters focus on sacrifice: how it functioned in Israel’s life with God, how Paul and Hebrews use it, and how it thereafter took on pagan connotations. Historically, three chapters review the development of atonement theories through Gustav Aulén’s Christus Victor. After reviewing atonement theologies of the last seventy-five years—especially feminist critiques of them—this retrieves Irenaeus and Athanasius, offering an understanding of atonement influenced by Baillie, Barth, Moltmann, Torrance, Von Balthazar, Tanner, and Weaver. Sacramentally, it describes how atonement is realized through the word, baptism, Eucharist, and prayer. Sacramental “atonement” nurtures those “in Christ” as members of God’s new creation through Jesus’ continuing high priestly ministry of atonement, until his final return.

This book was released on 2022 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work focuses on the tragic murder of Patrick Lyoya, an immigrant from the Democratic Republic of Congo, who was shot and killed by a police officer in Grand Rapids, Michigan, in April 2022. The case attracted national attention and drew reactions from around the world. It was also covered by international media outlets including BBC and Aljazeera. The author looks at the murder in the broader context of race relations and at relations between blacks and the police in Grand Rapids and across the country. He also addresses problems of re-adjustment to a new life in a new country African immigrants face in the United States. Patrick Lyoya faced those problems. He also explains, although only briefly, why the tragedy is inextricably linked with the fate of Lyoya's homeland in a geopolitical context where Western countries have played a critical role in determining the destiny of the country which has earned the unenviable distinction as “the bleeding heart of Africa.” He also briefly examines globalisation which he describes as “a new form of imperialism” in the post-Cold War era and how it is used to justify exploitation of Africa's natural resources including the Democratic Republic of Congo's vast amounts of minerals, and how industrialised nations have helped to impoverish the country and fuel conflict there, resulting in the death of millions of people and forcing countless others to flee and seek refuge in other countries including the United States. Patrick Lyoya and his family, and more than 8,000 other Congolese who settled in Grand Rapids, were some of them. Although the work briefly examines the ties the United States has had with the Democratic Republic of Congo since independence in the sixties when the country was known as Congo-Leopoldville, a relationship inextricably linked with the destiny of Congolese refugees who settled in Grand Rapids and other parts of the country, its main focus is on the murder of Patrick Lyoya, why he was killed, what contributed to his murder, and other factors about the tragedy. The uncertainty of the trial date for this case influenced publication of the book. Both sides, the defence and the prosecution, said they did not know when the trial would take place and implied it would be in 2023 and may be even in the last months of the year. They said in November 2022 that it would be many months before the case goes to court, a factor that played a major role in reaching the decision to have the book published before the trial. It complements the author's forthcoming work, “Shattered Dreams: Race and Justice.”

Book excerpt: It happens without warning, and it hits you with devastating force. Your closest girlfriend, the Ethel to your Lucy, the Thelma to your Louise, cuts you off completely. No more late-night phone calls, no more afternoon e-mails, no more catch-up lunches and dinners. She has decided for whatever reason to move on with her life and has left you to figure it out on your own. The experience can be as painful and confusing as a sudden breakup with a significant other, and you replay scenes from the friendship and wonder what you did wrong. Until now, women had to endure the heartache of losing a friend all alone, without the social support and understanding that accompanies, say, a romantic split-up -- and to make matters worse, they don't even have their best friend's shoulder to cry on. But What Did I Do Wrong? gives you that sympathetic shoulder and a resource -- and some answers -- that you can rely on. After author Liz Pryor had gone through a number of these breakups herself, she set out to discover why they were happening, how to help herself -- and others -- get through them...and how to prevent them from happening again. Through personal interviews and her popular website, www.lizpryor.com, Pryor collected hundreds of stories of friendships with which you will identify. Now she draws on those stories to explore the dynamics of friendship breakups in a candid, intimate way, revealing the patterns, the warning signs, and some ways to put a friendship right or help it change to meet your or your friend's changing life. She also explains how to end a friendship -- if you find that you need to do so -- in ways that honor both parties' feelings and your history together. Like the best kind of girlfriend -- one who really will stay friends forever -- Pryor blends plain, old-fashioned, feminine good sense and good humor with genuine empathy for the thousands of women who live with the confusion that lingers after an ended friendship -- for women of all ages, races, and backgrounds. What Did I Do Wrong? validates your feelings and inspires you to be more forthright and compassionate with new and old friends. It might even lead you to reconnect with a lost one. In the end, you will be moved and uplifted by the many stories of strong friendships, broken friendships, and renewed friendships that make this book a treasure of women's wisdom and experiences.

Book excerpt: Written as a faith-building tool for Christians who desire to grow in their relationship with the Lord, Did God Do That? takes its readers beyond the miracles of God, directly to personal application. Not only does this devotional allow believers to read about specific miracles in a chronological, expository manner, it also challenges God's people to go further than just reading. This is accomplished through the "Think" and "Do" portions of each devotion. The end goal of this book is for those who read it to complete all twelve weeks desiring to read more of the Bible, and to live the life of Christ; believing fully in what God can accomplish in and through their lives. Hugh Jefferson Wylie III was born on the 17th of March, 1970 to Hugh and Erma Wylie. Christianity proclaims God’s goodness, yet the Bible is filled with passages that seem to paint a different picture. On the surface, such depictions can hinder our confidence in God’s goodness. But when we’re willing to look deeper, we discover a consistent purpose behind everything God does—and that he is greater than we could ever imagine. Alongside bestselling author Josh McDowell, Matthew Tingblad invites you to discover how a good God has good reasons for his challenging actions in the Bible. Throughout, you will uncover the reality of God’s consistent motives and purposes: holiness, justice, and radical mercy. Whether you have your own questions about God or are ministering to those who do, Matthew and Josh will guide you through these difficult passages and ideas, all the while pointing to God’s power and redeeming love. Find confidence and joy in discovering that God is good—always good—even in the passages of Scripture that appear to convey otherwise.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Orson Welles called Ernst Lubitsch (1892–1947) “a giant” whose “talent and originality are stupefying.” Jean Renoir said, “He invented the modern Hollywood.” Celebrated for his distinct style and credited with inventing the classic genre of the Hollywood romantic comedy and helping to create the musical, Lubitsch won the admiration of his fellow directors, including Alfred Hitchcock and Billy Wilder, whose office featured a sign on the wall asking, “How would Lubitsch do it?” Despite the high esteem in which Lubitsch is held, as well as his unique status as a leading filmmaker in both Germany and the United States, today he seldom receives the critical attention accorded other major directors of his era. How Did Lubitsch Do It? restores Lubitsch to his former stature in the world of cinema. Joseph McBride analyzes Lubitsch’s films in rich detail in the first in-depth critical study to consider the full scope of his work and its evolution in both his native and adopted lands. McBride explains the “Lubitsch Touch” and shows how the director challenged American attitudes toward romance and sex. Expressed obliquely, through sly innuendo, Lubitsch’s risqué, sophisticated, continental humor engaged the viewer’s intelligence while circumventing the strictures of censorship in such masterworks as The Marriage Circle, Trouble in Paradise, Design for Living, Ninotchka, The Shop Around the Corner, and To Be or Not to Be. McBride’s analysis of these films brings to life Lubitsch’s wit and inventiveness and offers revealing insights into his working methods.

Book excerpt: Too often people limit God by believing that He has only forgiven their sins and promised eternal life. That is act 1 of the Father’s gifts. God’s people have not been taught how to operate in His power. God planned for man to have dominion over the earth when He created Adam. He then had to send Jesus to restore His kids to Him. The Jew’s yearly atonement covered their sins. They were in right standing by believing. Same as us! God told them repeatedly, if you turn away from what you are doing and come to me you will be forgiven and blessed. They believed in the Messiah who would provide it “all” for them. Since Christ and the Cross, we now have a better agreement, the power of the Holy Spirit in us - a 24 hour a day access - that is ours to boldly use in life. We now have what God originally designed for our use. The truth is that eternal life is right now. The emphasis in the New Testament Gospel is on the word “life” and not on the word “eternal.” Life represents a vitality where all your needs and wants are met. We will always be somewhere: here, in heaven or on the new earth. This is eternity, right now, wherever you are. The life described in scripture is a “too good to be true” life. This book is about leading us to the life God wants us to have. To those who are willing and able to grasp the concepts laid out and will believe, great things will come to pass for you and countless others.

Book excerpt: Nine of the most controversial violent crimes in America’s history are reexamined in these compelling stories of true crime Dr. Samuel Mudd set John Wilkes Booth’s broken ankle, but was he actually part of the larger conspiracy to assassinate President Abraham Lincoln? Did Lizzie Borden brutally murder her own parents in Massachusetts? Was admitted jihadist Zacarias Moussaoui really involved in the terrorist plot to destroy the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001? In a series of provocative and eye-opening true crime investigations, author Fred Rosen revisits some of the most shocking and notorious crimes in America over the past two centuries to determine once and for all . . . did they really do it? Applying logic and techniques of modern criminology while reexamining the crime scenes, official police records, and the original courtroom testimonies of witnesses and the accused, Rosen explores nine infamous crimes that rocked the nation and the verdicts that were ultimately handed down. From Ethel and Julius Rosenberg’s execution for treason to the kidnapping and killing of the Lindbergh baby to the Ku Klux Klan slayings of three civil rights workers in Mississippi to 9/11, the alleged perpetrators get another day in court as Rosen calls into question the circumstantial evidence and cultural context that may have determined guilt or innocence in each case.
