Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It can be argued that cinema was created in France by Louis Lumi_re in 1895 with the invention of the cinZmatographe, the first true motion-picture camera and projector. While there were other cameras and devices invented earlier that were capable of projecting intermittent motion of images, the cinZmatographe was the first device capable of recording and externally projecting images in such a way as to convey motion. Early films such as Lumi_re's La Sortie de l'usine, a minute-long film of workers leaving the Lumi_re factory, captured the imagination of the nation and quickly inspired the likes of Georges MZli_s, Alice Guy, and Charles PathZ. Through the years, French cinema has been responsible for producing some of the world's best directors_Jean Renoir, Jean-Luc Godard, Fran_ois Truffaut, and Louis Malle_and actors_Charles Boyer, Catherine Deneuve, GZrard Depardieu, and Audrey Tautou. The A to Z of French Cinema covers the history of French film from the silent era to the present in a concise and up to date volume detailing the development of French cinema and major theoretical and cultural issues related to it. This is done through a chronology, an introduction, photographs, a bibliography, and hundreds of cross-referenced dictionary entries on many of the major actors, directors, films, movements, producers, and studios associated with French cinema. Going beyond mere biographical information, entries also discuss the impact and significance of each individual, film, movement, or studio included. This detailed, scholarly analysis of the development of film in France is useful to both the novice and the expert alike.

This book was released on 2013-07-31 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the early 1980s, filmmakers of Maghrebi origin have made a key contribution to the representation of issues such as immigration, integration and national identity in French cinema. However, they have done so mostly from a position on the margins of the industry. In contrast, since the early 2000s, Maghrebi-French and North African emigre filmmakers have occupied an increasingly prominent position in on both sides of the camera, announcing their presence on French screens in a wider range of genres and styles than ever before. This greater prominence and move to the mainstream has not automatically meant that these films have lost any of the social or political relevance of Beur cinema of the 1980s or the banlieue film of the 1990s. Indeed in the 2000s these films have increasingly questioned the boundaries between national, transnational and diasporic cinema, whilst simultaneously demanding, either implicitly or explicitly, a reconsideration of the very difference that has traditionally been seen as a barrier to the successful integration of North African immigrants and their descendants into French society. Through a detailed study of this transformative decade for Maghrebi-French and North African emigre filmmaking in France, this book argues for the emergence of a Post-Beur cinema in the 2000s that is simultaneously global and local in its outlook. An absorbing introduction to this key development in contemporary French cinema, Post-Beur Cinema is essential reading for students and scholars in Film Studies, French Studies and Diaspora Studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book focuses on the interest in socio-political themes that marked many French film productions of the 1990s and early 2000s. In order to underline the main characteristics and the originality of these feature films (political fictions), the author addresses the following questions: o How can one explain the renewed interest in contemporary French society? o To what extent can political fictions be described as political? o What is the contribution of political fictions to what some critics and scholars have described as a new type of realism? Showing the World to the World primarily addresses to the critical and socio-political context in which political fictions were made and released. With these parameters in mind, the book then moves on to in-depth discussions of films that have already attracted some attention, such as Mathieu Kassovitz’s La Haine and Olivier Ducastel and Jacques Martineau’s Drôle de Félix, as well as lesser known works, Siegrid Alnoy’s Elle est des nôtres and Jean-Marc Moutout’s Violence des échanges en milieu tempéré being some examples. Showing the World to the World makes an original contribution to theoretical debates on political cinema and to the field of French film studies. The study targets students and academic researchers as well as individuals with a keen interest in contemporary French cinema.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

This book was released on 2005 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study is based on an analysis of videos and transcripts of five films Fric-frac, Circonstances atténuantes, Le Jour se lève, La Règle du jeu and Hôtel du Nord. These films are examples of planned and artificial language. The book looks at the evidential value of these data and assesses the extent to which stereotyped and scripted language can contribute to an understanding of spoken Parisian usage by looking at phonetics, syntax, discourse, lexis and pragmatics. By comparing traditional research carried out by scholars in the nineteenth century and earlier with Parisian data collected and analysed by twentieth-century researchers, the work attempts to identify the salient features that both script-writers and actors in these films considered to be characteristic of social-group differences at that time.
