Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dictionary of Quotations: Spanish No modern literature can compare with that of Spain for its wealth of quotable aphorisms; and the difficulty in compiling a Dictionary of Spanish Quotations is not so much what to include as what to omit. The sententious proverb, derived straight from Oriental sources through the Hebrew and the Arabic, is deeply rooted in the very nature of the Spanish people, and Sancho Panza, whose common speech was largely composed of these clear-cut gems of wisdom, was but a whimsical exaggeration of a prevailing type not yet extinct amongst the unlettered peasantry. The Jewish proverbs of Sem Tob, and the more Christian aphorisms of Juan Manuel, Clemente Sanchez and the Marquis of Santillana, as well as the sententious didactics of the Arch priest of Hita, and a score of other writers quoted in the present Dictionary, all indicate the general trend of Spanish thought from the birth of Castilian literature to the present time. The gay cynicism of the French and Italian philosophy finds no echo in a literature which received its renewed inspiration from Eastern peoples at a time when the classical tradition had almost disappeared from the land. Throughout the quotations in this Dictionary there runs the same philosophic thread. The object is always didactic, and the teaching is Biblical in its tone and directness. The morality inculcated is based upon moderation, modesty, reticence, humility, patience; all of them oriental virtues, and precisely those which for ages Spaniards themselves have conspicuously lacked. But, perhaps, for this very reason, they have remained the counsel of perfection held high by the national literature, side by side with the exaggerated amativeness, inflated chivalry and spiritual pride, which have been the racial inheritance of the people. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dictionary of Quotations (English) As it would have been impossible to have included in a single volume a complete list of well-known quotations and sayings from the earliest historic times to the present day, this \work has been divided into Parts, the present volume containing quotations from only English and American Authors, translations being carefully excluded; I have, however, made, an exception in the case of the English Bible. The second volume, edited by Mr. T. B. Harbottle, which is now nearly ready for press, will contain quotations from only Greek and Latin writers; and it is hoped, if the success of these two Parts warrants it, to complete the work with a volume dealing with modern Continental writers. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dictionary of Quotations: From Ancient and Modern English and Foreign Sources Except in the case of quotations from Shakespeare, the reader will observe that the Editor has quoted only the names of the authors or the books from which they are taken, and has not, as might be expected of him, supplied either chapter or verse. The reason is, he did not think it worth the labour and expense that would have been involved in doing so, while the quotations given are for most part independent of the context, and are perfectly intelligible in their own light. They are all more or less of an aphoristic quality, and the meaning and application are evident to any one who understands the subject of which they treat. As for the other qualities of these quotations, they will be found to be in general brief in expression and pointed in application, and not a few of them winged as well as barbed. A great many are pregnant in meaning; suggest more than they express; and are the coinage of minds of no ordinary penetration and grasp of thought. While some of them are so simple that a child might understand them, there are others that border on regions in which the clearest-headed and surest footed might stumble and come to grief. The collection might have been larger; the quarry of the literature of the present century alone might have supplied materials for as big a book. But the Editor's task was to produce a work that should embrace gleanings from different fields of literature, and he could only introduce from that of the present day as much as his limits allowed. Yet, though the quantity given is no index of the quantity available, the Editor hopes the reader will allow that his selection has not been made in the dark, and that what he has given is 'of the true quality, as well as enough in quantity for most readers to digest. If the quality be good, the quantity is of little account, for what has been said of Reason may be said of Wisdom which is its highest expression: Whoso hath any, hath access to the whole. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Dictionary of Quotations From the English Poets Waller, Dryden, Addison, Prior, Gay, Pope, Swift, Thomson, and a great many others who flourished within his time; and these were precisely the poets we most cared to cultivate. In later years, but too late for my youthful purposes, Messrs. Whittaker brought out a Dictionary of Quotations from the British Poets, in 3 vols. Post 8vc., one for Shakespeare in 1823, another for Blank Verse in 1824, and the third for Rhyme in 1825, all anonymous, but known to be by Wm. Kingdom. This work, which subsequently became my property, is a very careful and excellent compilation, and has been largely used by subsequent compilers, English and American, especially the latter, without in any instance, as far as I can discover, having been acknowledged or even mentioned by them. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dictionary of Latin and Greek Quotations, Proverbs, Maxims, and Mottos, Classical and Mediaeval, Including Law Terms and Phrases Dictionary of Latin Quotations more copious, correct, and complete than any hitherto published had long been a cherished idea of the publisher, and awaited only time and circumstance for its development. Finding in the present editor a gentleman well qualified both by reading and industry to carry out his views, he placed the materials in his hands, and these with large additions, the fruit of further researches, are now laid before the reader. The present collection differs from its predecessors in being limited exclusively to Latin and Greek quotations, the publisher intending, at a later period, to give French, Italian, Spanish, and German, in a separate volume. This arrangement has enabled him to nearly quadruple the number of Latin quotations given heretofore, and to extend the number of Greek from about twenty to upwards of five hundred; amounting in all to an aggregate of more than eight thousand.
