The Board recommends it for every collection whose users conduct analytical studies of literature. Reference Books Bulletin The powerful hold that literature exercises is based primarily on recognition--the reader's ability to identify with others through shared human concerns that transcend ttace, time, and cultural boundaries. These universal themes, and how they have been treated in literature from the classical period to the present, are the subject of the critical essays comprising this volume. A fascinating resource for students and general readers and an essential research tool for scholars in literature, it is the first thematic reference on this scale to be published in English. The dictionary consists of 143 essays contributed by 98 specialists in world literature. Topics covered include themes relating to adventure, family life, the supernatural, eroticism, status, humor, idealism, terror, and many other categories of human experience. Each entry begins with a defintion and a sketch on the origin and historical background of the literary theme. The topical essay discusses the significance and occurrence of the theme in world literature and supplies information on geographical area, genre, style, and chronology. Entries conclude with a selected bibliography of scholarship in the area. A cross-index to themes and motifs will enable the reader to find information on secondary or related topics. Convenient to use and presented in a standardized format, this major new reference will be an important acquisition for libraries with collections in English, American, and world literature.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dictionary of English Literature: Being a Comprehensive Guide to English Authors and Their Works Further, the Noms de Plume assumed by literary men and women are given and explained, many for the first time. Familiar Quotations, Phrases, and Proverbs are entered in considerable numbers, with distinct and accurate references to their original sources. These are arranged, so far as possible, according to their first striking word - a plan which has seemed to the Author the most useful and intelligible that could be adopted. Characters in Poetry and Fiction are largely indexed - to an extent, indeed, not hitherto attempted, and with the result, it is believed, that few of any importance are omitted. Illustrative Quotations are frequently appended. The most celebrated Poems, Songs, and Ballads are entered, not only by their titles, but by their First Lines, which are frequently remembered when the titles are forgotten. A feature of the Work is the introduction of references to Translations of the Works of prominent Foreign Writers of all times and countries. Another feature is the insertion of notices of some of the most celebrated Libraries throughout the kingdom, and of Societies connected with English Literature. Space is also devoted to brief, but, it is hoped, sufficient explanations of the various kinds of Literature, such as Epics, Odes, Masques, Mysteries, and so on. Finally, Special Articles, as exhaustive as their limits would permit, have been introduced on such subjects as The Drama, Newspapers, Novels, and Poetry, with the view of enabling the reader to systematise, if he please, the varied information given in other portions of the work. A work so comprehensive in aim - necessitating the survey of so wide, so inexhaustible a field - can hardly be quite free from error. Yet the Author would fain hope that no signal inaccuracy will be detected; and while committing his pages to the consideration of the public, he feels it due to himself to say that, during the years occupied in the preparation of the work, he has grudged no labour to make it worthy of the favourable reception he trusts it will obtain. Book excerpt: WHAT ARE “LITERARY WORDS”? ‘Literary words’ are associated with literature. ‘Literary words’ are typical of a work of literature and imaginative writing. ‘Literary words’ are used with a particular meaning, in narrative, drama, poetry and other writing in a literary manner. This book has been divided into three sections: Section 01: Common Literary Words Section 02: Figurative Use of the Words Section 03: Glossary of Literary Terms IMPORTANT NOTES NOTE -- A: ELEVATED WORDS Use of an ‘Elevated’ Word in Place of a ‘Simple’ Word ‘Elevated language’ is widely used in literature. Elevated Word -- a word that is used to show a high intellectual level Simple Word -- a word that is used to keep the conversation simple in daily life Example 1: ‘Behold’ [elevated word] | ‘See’ [simple word] Meaning of ‘behold’ and ‘see’: to become aware of something by using your eyes Example 2: ‘Blithe’ [elevated word] | ‘Happy’ [simple word] Meaning of ‘blithe’ and ‘happy’: showing or feeling pleasure ****** NOTE -- B: FIGURATIVE USE OF THE WORDS Many words and phrases are used in a different (literary) way from their usual (literal) meanings to produce a special effect. [I have put these words together in Section-2 (figurative use of the words) of this book.] Example-1: ache: In a general sense -- to feel a continuous pain His leg ached because of injury. ache: In a literary sense -- to be very sad His false accusations made our heart aches. [= made us sad] Example-2: Flash: In a general sense -- to shine brightly for a few moments The camera flashed once. Flash: In a literary sense -- to suddenly show a strong emotion Their eyes flashed with horror. ****** NOTE -- C: ‘LITERARY TERMS’ There are many words that are used to describe a particular form of writing in a literary work or used in the analysis, discussion, classification, and criticism of a literary work. [I have defined these terms in Section-3 (glossary of literary terms) of this book.] Examples: catharsis -- the process of releasing strong feelings through artistic activities diction -- the choice and use of words to create a specific effect in a literary work epithet -- a word or expression used to attribute a special quality to somebody/something genre -- a particular category, style or type to which a literary wok belongs holograph -- a handwritten piece of writing by its author idyll -- a poem that describes a peaceful and happy scene juvenilia -- a literary work produced by an artist, in his/her youth melodrama -- a literary work that is full of exciting and exaggerated events or emotions opera -- a dramatic work where a majority of the words are sung to music panegyric -- a speech or written composition that praises somebody/something prosody -- the patterns of rhythms and sounds in poetry quatrain -- a verse of a poem that has four lines refrain -- a line or number of lines of a song or poem that is repeated after each verse scene -- one of the small sections within an act (a major division) of a play semantic -- relating to the meaning of words and sentences trilogy -- a set of three books, plays, movies, etc. on the same characters or subject figure of speech -- an expression in which a word or phrase represents one thing in terms of something dissimilar (non-literal) to create a particular effect in somebody’s mind, or in which an emphasis is produced by patterns of sound. [Some common figures of speech are as follows -- alliteration, anaphora, antistrophe. apostrophe, assonance, consonance, hyperbole, irony, litotes, metaphor, metonymy, periphrasis, personification, simile, synecdoche]

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nineteenth-century readers had an appetite for books so big they seemed to contain the whole world: immense novels, series of novels, encyclopaedias. Especially in Eurasia and North America, especially among the middle and upper classes, people had the space, time, and energy for very long books. More than other multi-volume nineteenth-century collections, the dictionaries, or their descendants of the same name, remain with us in the twenty-first century. Online or on paper, people still consult Oxford for British English, Webster for American, Grimm for German, Littré for French, Dahl for Russian. Even in spaces whose literary languages already had long philological and lexicographic traditions-Chinese, Japanese, Arabic, Persian, Greek, Latin-the burgeoning imperialisms and nationalisms of the nineteenth century generated new dictionaries. The Whole World in a Book explores a period in which globalization, industrialization, and social mobility were changing language in unimaginable ways. Newly automated technologies and systems of communication expanded the international reach of dictionaries, while rising literacy rates, book consumption, and advertising led to their unprecedented popularization. Dictionaries in the nineteenth century became more than dictionaries: they were battlefields between prestige languages and lower-status dialects; national icons celebrating the language and literature of the nation-state; and sites of innovative authorship where middle and lower classes, volunteers, women, colonial subjects, the deaf, and missionaries joined the ranks of educated white men in defining how people communicated and understood the world around them. In this volume, eighteen of the world's leading scholars investigate these lexicographers asking how the world within which they lived supported their projects? What did language itself mean for them? What goals did they try to accomplish in their dictionaries?
