Book Synopsis Astrostatistics by : Gutti Jogesh Babu
Download or read book Astrostatistics written by Gutti Jogesh Babu and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1996-08-01 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern astronomers encounter a vast range of challenging statistical problems, yet few are familiar with the wealth of techniques developed by statisticians. Conversely, few statisticians deal with the compelling problems confronted in astronomy. Astrostatistics bridges this gap. Authored by a statistician-astronomer team, it provides professionals and advanced students in both fields with exposure to issues of mutual interest. In the first half of the book the authors introduce statisticians to stellar, galactic, and cosmological astronomy and discuss the complex character of astronomical data. For astronomers, they introduce the statistical principles of nonparametrics, multivariate analysis, time series analysis, density estimation, and resampling methods. The second half of the book is organized by statistical topic. Each chapter contains examples of problems encountered astronomical research and highlights methodological issues. The final chapter explores some controversial issues in astronomy that have a strong statistical component. The authors provide an extensive bibliography and references to software for implementing statistical methods. The "marriage" of astronomy and statistics is a natural one and benefits both disciplines. Astronomers need the tools and methods of statistics to interpret the vast amount of data they generate, and the issues related to astronomical data pose intriguing challenges for statisticians. Astrostatistics paves the way to improved statistical analysis of astronomical data and provides a common ground for future collaboration between the two fields.

Book excerpt: A milestone in the published literature on the subject, this first-ever Handbook of Beta Distribution and Its Applications clearly enumerates the properties of beta distributions and related mathematical notions. It summarizes modern applications in a variety of fields, reviews up-and-coming progress from the front lines of statistical research and practice, and demonstrates the applicability of beta distributions in fields such as economics, quality control, soil science, and biomedicine. The book discusses the centrality of beta distributions in Bayesian inference, the beta-binomial model and applications of the beta-binomial distribution, and applications of Dirichlet integrals.

Book Synopsis Beyond Beta: Other Continuous Families Of Distributions With Bounded Support And Applications by : Samuel Kotz
Download or read book Beyond Beta: Other Continuous Families Of Distributions With Bounded Support And Applications written by Samuel Kotz and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2004-12-08 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Statistical distributions are fundamental to Statistical Science and are a prime indispensable tool for its applications. This monograph is the first to examine an important but somewhat neglected field — univariate continuous distribution on a bounded domain, excluding the beta distribution. It provides an elementary but thorough discussion of “novel” contributions developed in recent years, such as the two-sided power, generalized trapezoidal and generalized Topp and Leone distributions, among others. It discusses a general framework for constructing two-sided distributions and some of its properties. It contains a comprehensive chapter on the triangular distribution as well as a chapter on earlier extensions not emphasized in existing literature. Special attention is given to estimation, in particular, non-standard maximum likelihood procedures. The applications are drawn mainly from the econometric and engineering domains.
Book Synopsis Structural Reliability by : Yan-Gang Zhao
Download or read book Structural Reliability written by Yan-Gang Zhao and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2021-04-13 with total page 656 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: STRUCTURAL RELIABILITY Discover a new and innovative approach to structural reliability from two authoritative and accomplished authors The subject of structural reliability, which deals with the problems of evaluating the safety and risk posed by a wide variety of structures, has grown rapidly over the last four decades. And while the First-Order Reliability Method is principally used by most textbooks on this subject, other approaches have identified some of the limitations of that method. In Structural Reliability: Approaches from Perspectives of Statistical Moments, accomplished engineers and authors Yan-Gang Zhao and Dr. Zhao-Hui Lu, deliver a concise and insightful exploration of an alternative and innovative approach to structural reliability. Called the Methods of Moment, the authors’ approach is based on the information of statistical moments of basic random variables and the performance function. The Methods of Moment approach facilitates structural reliability analysis and reliability-based design and can be extended to other engineering disciplines, yielding further insights into challenging problems involving randomness. Readers will also benefit from the inclusion of: A thorough introduction to the measures of structural safety, including uncertainties in structural design, deterministic measures of safety, and probabilistic measures of safety An exploration of the fundamentals of structural reliability theory, including the performance function and failure probability A practical discussion of moment evaluation for performance functions, including moment computation for both explicit and implicit performance functions A concise treatment of direct methods of moment, including the third- and fourth-moment reliability methods Perfect for professors, researchers, and graduate students in civil engineering, Structural Reliability: Approaches from Perspectives of Statistical Moments will also earn a place in the libraries of professionals and students working or studying in mechanical engineering, aerospace and aeronautics engineering, marine and offshore engineering, ship engineering, and applied mechanics.

Book Synopsis A Guide to Statistical Methods and to the Pertinent Literature / Literatur zur Angewandten Statistik by : Lothar Sachs
Download or read book A Guide to Statistical Methods and to the Pertinent Literature / Literatur zur Angewandten Statistik written by Lothar Sachs and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Readers of my books, students and scientists, often ask for spe cial references not commonly found in introductory or interme diate books on statistics. From the titles and contents of 1449 key papers and books which are listed and numbered in Sec tion 5, I have selected keywords and subject headings and ar ranged them alphabetically together with the numbers of perti nent references in Section 3. Number 1153, for instance, denotes my book" Applied Statis tics". It contains a bibliographical section on pages 568 to 641. Supplementary material is displayed in this small bibliographi cal guide. It also complements well-known textbooks of Box, Hunter and Hunter (No.121), Dixon and Massey (No.286), Snedecor and Cochran (No. 1238), and many recent competitors. Since the methodology of statistics is expanding rapidly, many methods are not considered at all or only introduced in the basic textbooks of statistics. There is a need for intermediate statistical methods concerned with increasingly complicated ap plications of statistics to actual research situations. Here the specification of terms helps to find some sources. Since the ref erences vary considerably in length and content, the number of culled or extracted terms per referenced page varies even more, as does also their degree of specialization; however in most cases an intermediate statistical level is maintained.
