The historical context refers to the circumstances and incidents surrounding an event. This context is formed by everything that, in some way, influences the event when it happens. A fact is always tied to its time: that is, to its characteristics. Therefore, when analyzing events that took place tens, hundreds or thousands of years ago, it is essential to know the historical context to understand them. Otherwise, we would be analyzing and judging what happened in a totally different era with a current perspective.Charles Dickens' Children Stories by Charles Dickens.- Trotty Veck and his daughter Meg - Tiny Tim - Little Dombey - The runaway couple - Poor Jo! - The little Kenwigs - Little Dorrit - The blind toy-maker - Little Nell - Little David Copperfield - Jenny Wren - Pip's adventure. - Charles Dickens - Charles John Huffam Dickens FRSA (February 7, 1812 - June 9, 1870) was an English writer and social critic. Font adjustments & biography included Unabridged (100% Original content) Illustrated About Charles Dickens' Children Stories by Charles Dickens Charles Dickens was one of the greatest among the many story-writers of "the Victorian age;" that is, the middle and latter part of the Nineteenth Century, when Victoria was Queen of Great Britain. Perhaps he was the greatest of them all for now, a generation after he passed away, more people read the stories of Dickens than those by any other author of that period. In those wonderful writings are found many pictures of child-life connected with the plan of the novels or stories. These child-stories have been taken out of their connections and are told by themselves in this volume. By and by you will read for yourselves, "The Christmas Carol," "The Chimes," "David Copperfield," "The Old Curiosity Shop," and the other great books by that fascinating writer, who saw people whom nobody else ever saw, and made them real. When you read those books you will meet again these charming children, and will remember them as the friends of your childhood.

Book excerpt: This Top Five Classics illustrated edition of Dickens’s immortal classic, A Christmas Carol, features: • All of the original full-color and b&w illustrations by John Leech • 20 additional woodcut engravings by Sol Eytinge Jr. from the 1869 American edition by Ticknor & Fields • A helpful introduction, author bio, and bibliography Ebenezer Scrooge, a miserly old curmudgeon who spurns Christmas as a “humbug,” is given the chance to redeem himself through the intervention of four Spirits on Christmas Eve. If reading Dickens’s most beloved story doesn't put you in the true spirit of Christmas, you may be beyond redemption. As Scrooge’s nephew Fred said, “I have always thought of Christmas time…as a good time: a kind, forgiving, charitable, pleasant time: the only time I know of, in the long calendar of the year, when men and women seem by one consent to open their shut-up hearts freely, and to think of people below them as if they really were fellow-passengers to the grave, and not another race of creatures bound on other journeys.” Or as Tiny Tim put it more succinctly, “God bless us every one!”

A Child's History of England is a book by Charles Dickens. It first appeared in serial form in Household Words, running from January 25, 1851 to December 10, 1853. Dickens also published the work in book form in three volumes: the first volume on December 20, 1851; the second, December 25, 1852; and the third, December 24, 1853. Although the volumes were published in December, each was postdated the following year. They bore the titles:Volume I. - England from the Ancient Times, to the Death of King John (1852)Volume II. - England from the Reign of Henry the Third, to the Reign of Richard the Third (1853)Volume III. - England from the Reign of Henry the Seventh to the Revolution of 1688 (1854)Dickens dedicated the book to "My own dear children, whom I hope it may help, bye and bye, to read with interest larger and better books on the same subject". The history covered the period between 50 BC and 1689, ending with a chapter summarising events from then until the accession of Queen Victoria. A Child's History was included in the curricula of British School children well into the 20th century, with successive editions published from 1851 to World War II.

Book excerpt: Readers of A Christmas Carol will be aware that the book is not simply about Christmas but is a tale of redemption found in human fellowship and kindness. Films focus on Scrooge being a loveable villain who is capable of change and does so by the end of the story. The true story is darker. Scrooge is led by the spirits before confronting the terror of his future. The illustrations chosen for this copy of A Christmas Carol reflect the darkness within it, the tenuous nature of our goodness, and the redemption we must find for ourselves by the end of the night. This is the original text from A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens with new illustrations and a full foreword dedicated to the darkly spiritual themes of the book.

Book excerpt: More than a 100 years after his death, Charles Dickens is still entertaining readers with his classic "A Christmas Carol," the timeless classic which popularized the terms "Merry Christmas," "Tiny Tim," and "Scrooge"-in addition to influencing the way much of the world celebrates Christmas. Charles Dickens, (1812-1870), was the most popular English novelist of the Victorian era, and one of the most popular of all time. He created some of literature's most iconic characters, with the theme of social reform running throughout his work. The continuing popularity of his novels and short stories is such that they have never gone out of print. Much of his work first appeared in periodicals and magazines in serialised form, a popular way of publishing fiction at the time. Other writers would complete entire novels before serial publication commenced, but Dickens often wrote his in parts, in the order they were meant to appear. The practice lent his stories a particular rhythm, punctuated by one "cliffhanger" after another, to keep the public eager for the next installment. His work has been praised for its mastery of prose, and for its teeming gallery of unique personalities, by writers such as George Gissing and G. K. Chesterton, though the same characteristics have prompted others, such as Henry James and Virginia Woolf, to criticize him for sentimentality and implausibility.

Book excerpt: In his "Ghostly little book," Charles Dickens invents the modern concept of Christmas Spirit and offers one of the world's most adapted and imitated stories. We know Ebenezer Scrooge, Tiny Tim, and the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Future, not only as fictional characters, but also as icons of the true meaning of Christmas in a world still plagued with avarice and cynicism.

Unabridged (100% Original content) Font adjustments & biography included Illustrated About A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens A Christmas Carol is a novella by Charles Dickens, first published in London by Chapman & Hall on 19 December 1843. The novella met with instant success and critical acclaim. A Christmas Carol tells the story of a bitter old miser named Ebenezer Scrooge and his transformation into a gentler, kindlier man after visitations by the ghost of his former business partner Jacob Marley and the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Yet to Come. The book was written at a time when the British were examining and exploring Christmas traditions from the past as well as new customs such as Christmas cards and Christmas trees. Carol singing took a new lease on life during this time.[2] Dickens' sources for the tale appear to be many and varied, but are, principally, the humiliating experiences of his childhood, his sympathy for the poor, and various Christmas stories and fairy tales. A Christmas Carol remains popular-having never been out of print-and has been adapted many times to film, stage, opera, and other media.

Book excerpt: A Christmas Carol The full title of Charles Dickens' most famous work is technically A Prose Christmas Carol, being a Christmas ghost story. This novel was published on December 19, 1843, and the first print run of 6,000 copies sold out on Christmas Eve of that year. The publication of the first edition was fraught with complications, and although the book was met with positive reviews, earnings on the book fell far short of Dickens's expectations, and financial stress caused divisions between Dickens and the original publisher, Chapman & Hall.
