Book excerpt: A boxing enigma and arguably the most successful athlete in Africa's sports history, Dick Tiger was a beacon of hope and inspiration in the defining moments of Nigeria's history. With a toughness hewn from his childhood in the rustic backwoods of Southeastern Nigeria he was able to transform his life through boxing, and transcended boxing by his activism seeking justice and equity for the oppressed in his homeland. He epitomized grace and strength of character in overcoming challenges, and although his stellar career and life had been compromised by his activism, his name and legacy remain synonymous with integrity and self-actualization. In this book history is brought back to life! Relive the fascinating course of Nigeria's bold efforts in hosting the first ever world championship event in Africa; and examine Dick Tiger's personal thoughts about the epic match in Ibadan and his involvement in the Biafra war. How did Tiger really feel about the Biafra war? Why was the match postponed so many times? Were the rain doctors hired by the Nigerian government effective? Read this epochal story to find answers to these questions and more! Battle cries, rain gods, mobs and protests, angst and exhilaration, and vivid photographs, all make this book gripping and enlightening; a must-read.

Book excerpt: Dick Tiger was perhaps the greatest fighter to come out of the African continent. Emerging from an environment devoid of substantive traditions in boxing, he would overcome a litany of obstacles before becoming a two-time undisputed world middleweight titlist and an undisputed light heavyweight champion. ?The Life and Times of a Boxing Immortal, ? the first comprehensive biography of Dick Tiger, puts the man in the context of his times. A migrant fighter to Liverpool, the repository of West African born fighters who kept the British game alive during the industry wide recession of the 1950s, Tiger later moved to America where he established a marquee value seldom attained by non-American fighters and where he played a prominent role as an ?in-house? fighter at the ?Mecca of Boxing, ? New York City's Madison Square Garden. His life also personified the hopes, aspirations and the tragedy of the Igbo ethnic group. An avowed apostle of Biafran secession from Nigeria, Tiger's support would cost him dearly. Here is Dick Tiger as never before explained: The ?blue collar? fighter, ageless ringman, commercial venturer, Nigerian patriot and Biafran rebel. From empty bottle trader to wealthy realtor, from Nigerian boxing booths to Madison Square Garden, from journeyman fighter to world championship fighter; ?The Life and Times of a Boxing Immortal? is a compelling study of human dignity in triumph and in tragedy.

Book excerpt: In the era of the American Civil Rights Movement, and barely three years after Africas most populous nation celebrated her independence from colonial rule, the Nigerian government brought her full weight to bear in a world championship title boutthe first ever in Black Africa. The Dick Tiger vs. Gene Fullmer III fight, held in Liberty Stadium in Ibadan, Nigeria, on August 10, 1963, was a forerunner for all the big fights in the African continent. Westerners didnt believe that a newly independent African nation could dare muster the audacity, or financial backbone, to stage a world championship event. In Africas Honor chronicles this groundbreaking fight while narrating the details of Richard (Dick Tiger) Ihetus life in and out of the boxing ring. Presented as a play by Justina Ihetu, Dick Tigers daughter, and complete with archival photos, this drama showcases the patriotism and heroism of a boxer who had an inauspicious beginning. Ihetu provides insight into the wheeling and dealing behind the match, and she humanizes the principle playerslaying bare their innermost thoughts and anxieties to help form a deeper understanding of the character, and circumstances that reveal Africas promise, of unity, dignity, and honor.

Book excerpt: FINALLY, THE TRUE STORY of the Mafia’s execution of Jersey City legend Frankie DePaula can be told: -Was his world title bout with Bob Foster fixed by the Mob? -Did the Mob kill Pat Amato, his first manager, in order to pave the way for him to sign with their front man Gary Garafola? -How did he come to be involved in a notorious heist of $80,000 worth of electrolytic copper? -Was his dalliance with the step-daughter of a high-ranking mobster the reason for his shooting? -Or did the Mob kill him for giving up information on their involvement in the copper theft? Although Frankie appeared to some to be a true life exemplar of a character from Dead End; a wild and unreconstructed deviant headed for disaster, his life is set against the backdrop of the oftentimes dysfunctional environs of Jersey City, for long the seat of power of an administration dominated for decades by Mayoral potentate Frank Hague and maligned by the corruption of local politicians and the increasing influence of organized crime. PRAISE FOR JERSEY BOY “The author tells it like it was...Anyone who was around boxing in those days or has any knowledge of what the sport was like in the 1960s and early 1970s should read this book. It’s worth every penny.” ---J. Russell Peltz, IBHOF inductee and noted Boxing Historian & Archivist "A brilliant biography...Makinde brings it all to life through meticulous research, painstaking chapter notes and a smooth, lyrical writing style." ---Murray Greig, The Edmonton Sun "It's a cracking read" ---Steve Bunce, BBC Radio London Boxing Hour Show "Makinde writes in elegant yet precise prose" ---eastsideboxing.com "A book worthy of a Hollywood encore" ---maxboxing.com

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Last Night When I Was Young saw me riding thoroughbred racehorses as if I were Doug Smith and Fred Winter. In the same vein, I played football as Jimmy Greaves did for Chelsea and I was a Test Match batsman emulating the great PBH May. I hit the biggest serve as Mike Sangster in the Davis Cup, as well as bobbing and weaving in the boxing ring exactly like my favourite Dick Tiger, the world middleweight champion. I was unstoppable behind the wheel of a racing car as Britain's first world champion Mike Hawthorn but on the speedway track I rode with stylish aplomb interpreting my hero, Ronnie "Mirac" Moore. Swinging a mashie niblick as Peter Alliss was no handicap. Rugby Union at Twickenham when my body swerve was very sharp - Richard Sharp. When the Olympics came around, I ran the race of my life both over long distances and over one lap hurdles respectively as Gordon Pirie and the great David Hemery. With eyes open, I loved watching the upright Dorothy Hyman dip and throw herself over the line whilst I fell in love with Mary Rand hitch-kicking her way into Olympic history. Fantasy is then mixed with fact. The jockeys' journeys from completing exacting apprenticeships to becoming champions on the Flat and the National Hunt. Smith riding two-year-olds on the edge in the One Thousand Guineas and the Two Thousand Guineas. Whereas Winter was jumping off the edge of the world in The Grand National. The trials and tribulations with the relative success of the 1960's Chelsea football team from Drake's ducklings morphing into Docherty's uncut diamonds. A fourteen-year-old boy from New Zealand leaves home to become the first speedway superstar. The fight of the week from the USA brings us a Nigerian boxer who confounds convention and fights his way to the top of two weight divisions. A classical English batsman, an amateur as such who set records as a captain and whose impact on Test cricket is second to one. Birdies and bogeys abound, yet our golfing hero is a true British legend. 152 miles per hour as a world record was a cannonball service that belonged to a British no.1 tennis star that left us far too early. The first British world motor racing champion whose play-boy antics on and off the track caused his untimely death. A brief yet scintillating career as England's fly-half sees a jaw-dropping piece of rugby played over and over - sixty years later. The hackles on the neck rise again through an Olympic television commentary that almost matches the magnitude of the performance and the world record that was set. All are sporting yesterday's, worthy of repeat, a young boy's memory listing every feat.
