Book Synopsis The Consequences of Brazilian Social Movements in Historical Perspective by : Valesca Lima
Download or read book The Consequences of Brazilian Social Movements in Historical Perspective written by Valesca Lima and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-08-26 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book sheds light on the outcomes of social movements in Brazil. It provides an extensive analysis of how and when collective mobilization and protest activities brought about social and political change. Charting the dynamics and characteristics of Brazil’s social movements from the abolition of slavery in 1888 to the present day, the contributors to this edited volume demonstrate the processes of social movement activism in Brazil, and its relations with political institutions across various types of governments and political regimes. They bring to light both political opportunity structures of different historical periods, and the political and cultural consequences of mobilization stemming from the collective action of social movements. Showcasing various approaches, the book encompasses a plurality of methodological perspectives including network analysis, collective memory, trajectories, and quantitative techniques of process analysis. Ultimately, the authors present new empirical evidence about social movement outcomes in Brazil, including the mobilization for housing rights, institutionalization processes in a re-democratized society, the effects of anti-dictatorship movements on activists, transformations of political agendas and the diffusion of social protests. Interdisciplinary at its core and highly engaging, The Consequences of Brazilian Social Movements in Historical Perspective offers essential reading on social movement studies to academics, activists and students.

Book excerpt: This edition of the Kasi Diaries draws upon the insightful entries detailing the events of the Second World War on a daily basis, and aims to be a contemporaneous view of the genesis, development and end of the war. The Diaries display a keen and observant mind, and shows the writer to be a fascinating narrator of events, with an easy style of writing and an excellent sense of humour. Almost to the day when Germany capitulated in May 1945, Kasi wrote in his Diary, "I have lived through this eventful period of the world's history - Thank God!" ""What I found most fascinating about his jottings are events leading to World War II, the rise of fascism in Germany, Italy, Spain, and Japan, and their initial victories ending in ignominious defeats. I felt like I was watching a news-reel film."" - Khushwant Singh.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: * Includes never-before-published letters and photographs * Written by an Irvine family member Mallory and Irvine. These two names have been inextricably joined since the two climbers disappeared on Mount Everest more than 75 years ago. Could they have been the first to reach the summit of the world's highest mountains-some 30 years earlier than Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay? Mallory's story has been well chronicled, but Irvine has always been overshadowed by his more famous climbing partner and little has been written about him. Who was he? Why was he invited by the British Everest Committee to join the 1924 expedition despite his limited mountaineering experience? And why did Mallory, 16 years his senior, select Irvine as his partner for the final assault on the summit? Julie Summers, great niece of Sandy Irvine, has been fascinated since childhood by the story of Uncle Sandy. In May 2000, Julie made an astonishing discovery: a long forgotten and unopened trunk containing Irvine's letters and photographs from Everest. Drawing on these and other material, Julie writes a revealing story of a fearless young adventurer whose life and death linked him with one of the greatest mountaineering legends of all time.
Book Synopsis W. E. Sangster: Herald of Holiness by : Andrew J. Cheatle
Download or read book W. E. Sangster: Herald of Holiness written by Andrew J. Cheatle and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2010-03-01 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There can be few names in British Methodism that are as recognizable as that of W. E. Sangster. In W. E. Sangster: Herald of Holiness Andrew Cheatle explores this great Methodist preacher's understanding of what it means to live a holy life in the context of a world torn apart by two global wars and the looming threat of nuclear destruction. Sangster turned for inspiration to John Wesley's view of salvation that included a full restoration of the moral image of God in this life. Was Wesley scriptural? Was he too optimistic, or had he understood the heart of the gospel? Sangster approached these questions from the perspective of twentieth-century scientific and theological thought. His aim was to recover the meaning of holy living for a church in a world of crisis.

Download or read book The Gaysh written by Frank Edwards and published by Helion & Company Limited. This book was released on 2004 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Gaysh tells the story of the emergence of an army following early attempts to protect the trade routes in and through Aden. From the first commercial treaty with the Abdali Sultan in 1802, various efforts were made to avoid looting, leading to the annexing of Aden Port by the East India Company in 1839. It was not until the Turks threatened to invade in the First World War that a regular army unit was formed. The 1st Yemen Infantry did not see action, and there was a move, on financial grounds, to disband it in 1928. Because a need remained, the decision was taken to replace its policing role by airpower, supported by a small force of levies to defend the bases, including a camel corps. The book takes that story on, chronologically, through the Aden Protectorate Levies' growing strength and its relationship with the British Government and its policies. It includes its part in the Silver Jubilee celebration parade in 1935, pre-1939 military operations, its role in WWII, its involvement in the evacuation of the Jews following the Arab/Jewish riots in Crater in 1947, and on to the creation of the Federation and the withdrawal of the British Army in 1967.
