Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: teachings from the Bible. Some of the stories are pretty hilarious; and others are sad and sorrowful. Her life story will have you laughing, then crying-and then pausing for a moment, to contemplate what it means to have faith. The amazing story of her mother's faith to still find her two kidnapped sons is beyond anybody's compelling imagination. These stories in Tecla's life makes you re-examine your own beliefs, and then seek a clearer path in your travels as well as filled with a desire to live by faith. You will certainly learn how to grow into your own absolute potential, simply by following God's directions. You will also discover that life's greatest accomplishment is doing the will of God, by tapping into your faith. ______________________________ I've had the distinct pleasure of copy-editing this book and offering suggestions on its form; I found the task both inspirational and heart-rending. Tecla's story (like that of her mother, as briefly summarized in the first chapter, dedicated to that strong and faith-filled woman) will certainly lift the spirits of any reader currently walking through the Fires of adversity and life-challenges. It also motivates us to reflect on the (comparatively mild) obstacles we may encounter in our daily lives, to find the courage to rise above them, in partnership with God and our Faith, and to move forward along our own Highway of Holiness.-Steve Trinward, Editor

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Henlee Barnette's life has spanned most of the twentieth century. His life in the rural South eventually led to his becoming a Christian. He graduated from Wake Forest College in 1940, and then attended seminary, taking the Ph.D. in 1948. For the next 50 years he taught Christian ethics, but not just in the classroom. In this remarkable memoir, he stresses Christianity as a pilgrimage, a way of life undergirded by faith in God. Such faith is active in love and calls for justice in personal and social relations. One's journey in the world needs a spiritual compass: the Christian's personal responsibility to do faith active in love, that is, agape love. Such love includes justice. Love without justice is subjective and sentimental. Love that Jesus taught provides concreteness and structure. Agape love makes justice just. Christian faith that is purely personal is suspect. In his own pilgrimage he became aware of the demonic forces that dehumanize us. Among these was the denial of basic human rights to minority groups. Love and justice motivated him to join the Civil Rights Movement as a means of achieving more just interpersonal relations. His relationships with blacks and whites during the Civil Rights Movement fill the pages of this wonderful narrative. But Barnette also fought against unjust wars, ecological abuse, poverty, violence, and a multitude of other issues which confront and challenge both Christian and church.

Book excerpt: “James Martin’s riveting new meditation on Jesus is one of the best books I’ve read in years—on any subject.” — Mary Karr, author of Lit James Martin, SJ, gifted storyteller, editor at large of America magazine, popular media commentator, and New York Times bestselling author of The Jesuit Guide to (Almost) Everything, brings the Gospels to life in Jesus: A Pilgrimage, and invites believers and seekers alike to experience Jesus through Scripture, prayer and travel. Combining the fascinating insights of historical Jesus studies with profound spiritual insights about the Christ of faith, Father Martin recreates the world of first-century Galilee and Judea to usher you into Jesus's life and times and show readers how Jesus speaks to us today. Martin also brings together the most up-to-date Scripture scholarship, wise spiritual reflections, and lighthearted stories about traveling through the Holy Land with a fellow (and funny) Jesuit, visiting important sites in the life of Jesus of Nazareth. The person at the heart of the Gospels can seem impossibly distant. Stories about his astonishing life and ministry—clever parables that upended everyone's expectations, incredible healings that convinced even skeptics, nature miracles that dazzled the dumbstruck disciples—can seem far removed from our own daily lives, hard to understand, and at times irrelevant. But in Jesus you will come to know him as Father Martin knows him: Messiah and Savior, as well as friend and brother. WINNER OF THE 2016 ILLUMINATION AWARD (GOLD). Book excerpt: This new version of the late fourth-century diary of journeys in and around the Holy Land known as the Itinerarium Egeriae provides a more literal translation of the Latin text than earlier English renderings, with the aim of revealing more of the female traveler’s personality. The substantial introduction to the book covers both early pilgrimage as a whole, especially travel by women, and the many liturgical rites of Jerusalem that Egeria describes. Both this and the verse-by-verse commentary alongside the translated text draw on the most recent scholarship, making this essential reading for pilgrims, students, and scholars seeking insight into life and piety during one of Christianity’s most formative periods.

Book excerpt: We all encounter times when our spirit feels dry, when doubt looms. The opportunity to tour Israel came at a good time. For months, my life has been a mindless plodding through necessary routine, as monotonous as an all-night shift on an assembly line. Life gets that way sometimes, when nothing specific is wrong but the world around us seems drained of color. Even my weekly worship experiences and daily quiet times with God have felt as dry and stale as last year's crackers. I'm ashamed to confess the malaise I've felt. I have been given so much. Shouldn't a Christian's life be an abundant one, as exciting as Christmas morning, as joyful as Easter Sunday? With gripping honesty, Lynn Austin pens her struggles with spiritual dryness in a season of loss and unwanted change. Tracing her travels throughout Israel, Austin seamlessly weaves events and insights from the Word . . . and in doing so finds a renewed passion for prayer and encouragement for her spirit, now full of life and hope.

Book excerpt: It’s difficult to be a pilgrim in a consumer world. A pilgrim is someone who looks more toward the destination than his present place. A consumer sets up shop as he secures more to consume, and invests his time, resources, and energy into guaranteeing there will always be more to consume. In Luke 17:33 Jesus says, “If you cling to your life, you will lose it, and if you let your life go, you will save it.” Finding our pilgrim path is the focus of this book to prepare the reader for the mission team they have chosen to be a part of. Book excerpt: "A charming and touching story that reminds us, with St. Bernadette, that grace is everywhere." —Robert Ellsberg, author, Blessed Among All Women The shrine of Our Lady of Lourdes in southern France appeals to Catholics as few other places do. The famous grotto is a place of healing that attracts some six million pilgrims to Lourdes each year. One of these recent pilgrims was James Martin, an American Jesuit. Fr. Martin went to Lourdes to serve as chaplain for a group of pilgrims sponsored by the Order of Malta, an international Catholic association devoted to charitable works. During his stay, Martin kept an illuminating diary of his trip. His touching and humorous account of the busy and gratifying days that he spent at Lourdes is a vivid description of a place filled with a powerful spiritual presence. "Lourdes is now one of those places where I have met God in a special way," Martin writes. Through this diary, we are able to share in his journey and feel the presence of God that he encountered there.

Book excerpt: "When Dorothy Day sat down to record her thoughts in diary form, she wrote not only as the leader of the Catholic Worker movement but also as a mother, a grandmother, and a deeply religious woman who was passionate about everything from baking bread to prayer. But whether describing day-to-day happenings or exploring the writings of the saints, Day's reflections return to her abiding theme - the call to personal and public transformation. Her diary entries touch on numerous social and moral concerns still vital in our day: the disenfranchised poor, the benefits of meaningful work, the significance of family, the dangers of secularization, the decline of moral standards, and the importance of faith."--BOOK JACKET.

Book excerpt: The news felt like a punch in the gut. I cried in disbelief as the doctor told me what they found. In the blink of an eye, my world turned upside down. My husband brought me to the Emergency Room after I experienced a seizure. The hospital staff did scans, tests, and a biopsy, and now the doctor told me I had an inoperable brain tumor. The name of my nemesis was Oligoastrocytoma, Grade 3. My husband and I used the CaringBridge website to keep family and friends informed on how I was doing. A Pilgrimage of Hope, A Story of Faith and Medicine, is my story chronicling the challenges in trying to triumph in the battle for my life. The memoirs capture the frightening details in a crash course with cancer and the possible treatments for this disease. Despite the cancer diagnosis, I found myself being called closer to God. I wanted to share my physical and spiritual journey with others so that when they are challenged, they will have some guidance in how to respond. With recovery in mind, my spiritual growth deepened as I aligned my will with the will of God. A pilgrimage to the Holy Land at the end of my treatments fulfilled my yearning for a greater understanding of Christ. I shared the details of my trip to the Holy Land on my CaringBridge site and in this book.
