Book excerpt: My name is Bekka and my life used to be simple. Sure, I was a goddess and a princess, but I had that figured out. Or at least I did until I came into my powers, and Arrick, the dangerously sexy heir of my family's greatest enemy, kidnapped me. Things got complicated after that--Arrick's home realm of Moldize faced imminent destruction and my newfound powers were destined to save them. But how could I trust them? Exiled from the peaceful Twelve Realms over 900 years ago, Moldize was filled with malevolent deities and villainous men. Forced into this brutal world, I felt conflicted. On the one hand, I wanted to stand against my family's enemy, but on the other, I felt drawn to my destiny like a moth to a flame. I needed to decide my next move quickly because time was running out. My powerful grandfather was searching for me, and I knew that once he caught up with the gods who kidnapped me, there would be no stopping his thirst for vengeance. That left me with a crucial question: Could I save them all before he found me? And even more important: Did I want to?

Book excerpt: The exciting end to The Poppy War trilogy, R. F. Kuang’s acclaimed, award-winning epic fantasy that combines the history of twentieth-century China with a gripping world of gods and monsters, to devastating, enthralling effect. After saving her nation of Nikan from foreign invaders and battling the evil Empress Su Daji in a brutal civil war, Fang Runin was betrayed by allies and left for dead. Despite her losses, Rin hasn’t given up on those for whom she has sacrificed so much—the people of the southern provinces and especially Tikany, the village that is her home. Returning to her roots, Rin meets difficult challenges—and unexpected opportunities. While her new allies in the Southern Coalition leadership are sly and untrustworthy, Rin quickly realizes that the real power in Nikan lies with the millions of common people who thirst for vengeance and revere her as a goddess of salvation. Backed by the masses and her Southern Army, Rin will use every weapon to defeat the Dragon Republic, the colonizing Hesperians, and all who threaten the shamanic arts and their practitioners. As her power and influence grows, though, will she be strong enough to resist the Phoenix’s intoxicating voice urging her to burn the world and everything in it?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For two years, I was a personal advisor to Dr. Otto Arosemena Gomez, President of Ecuador. During my tenure, I had the opportunity to interview an elderly man who was one of the original owners of a tea plantation not too far from Quito. The estate was established thirty years before our meeting. We discussed an authentic life experience, including one of my main characters, Sister Annett, who was the youngest of three nuns selected by the Catholic Church in Paris for an exchange program that brought her to Ecuador. Sister Annett is referred to as the Goddess of the Stars in the manuscript. In real life, she had no initial desire to become a nun. However, after the demise of her mother, she looked for comforting solace from her Parish Priest. She past many months mourning the memory of her mother. Without warning, Annett decided to become a nun. Her dispute with the church involved asking too many questions which was forbidden by the vows taken at the beginning of her religious experience. Being very young and beautiful, upon arrival in Ecuador, she could not understand why there was so much poverty in this country when the Church was financially sound. The storyline captivates her innocence and desire to convince the Cardinal, Bishop, and Mother Superior to use Church funds in the education of the Ecuadorian population. This would entail reading and writing, establishing small businesses to feed their families, and, in return, generating financial support for the Church. That suggestion fell on deaf ears. In the story, the three nuns, and priest, act as missionaries in the jungles of the Republic. The book’s adventure, for the most part, is a reflection of myself as the author. They encounter natives, both peaceful and hostile, including discovering a lost tribe of the Peruvian Inca. I invite the reader to sit back, relax, and enjoy reading this exceptional experience about an insight into life. I guarantee that all those who are captivated by intrigue, love and war will not be disappointed. Keywords – Catholic, Nun, Ecuador, Missionaries, Lost Tribe, Adventure

Say there was a novel in which Holden Caulfield was an alcoholic and Lolita was a photographer’s assistant and, somehow, they met in Bright Lights, Big City. He’s blinded by love. She by ambition. Diary of an Oxygen Thief is an honest, hilarious, and heartrending novel, but above all, a very realistic account of what we do to each other and what we allow to have done to us.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Mystery and the World, Maria Clara Bingemer explores how the place of religion in society has dramatically shifted since the Enlightenment. The modern era is characterised by a major change in humanity's fundamental desires that means that reason has taken the place of faith. Human beings, in their ongoing search for a scientific understanding of the world, have drifted away from seeking any essence of transcendence in their lives. Bingemer examines this transition and how, especially inthe postmodern era, it has led to technology and superficial happiness becoming all-important as opposed to the more sacred sense of contentment that governed us for centuries prior to the Enlightenment. In her discussion, however, Bingemer demonstrates that we as humans have not lost our innate desire to believe in a higher power and that, even in our world of instant satisfaction, we still need to fill the void left by religion. Through well-researched analysis of the modern era and discussion of some of the mystics of more recent times, she reveals to readers how our religious belief, whilst changed, is not dead and is still an important aspect of our existence.

Book excerpt: Veteran science writer Michael Balter skillfully weaves together many threads in this fascinating book about one of archaeology’s most legendary sites— Çatalhöyük. First excavated forty years ago, the site is justly revered by prehistorians, art historians, and New Age goddess worshippers alike for its spectacular finds dating almost 10,000 years ago. Archaeological maverick Ian Hodder, leader of the recent re-excavation at this Turkish mound, designated Balter as the project’s biographer. The result is a skillful telling of many stories about both past and present: of the inhabitants of Neolithic Çatalhöyük and the development of human creativity and ingenuity, as revealed in the recent excavation; of James Mellaart, the original excavator, whose troubles off the mound eventually overshadowed his incisive work at the site; of Hodder and his intense, brilliant crew who marveled and squabbled over the meaning of finds in dusty trenches while attempting to reintepret Mellaart’s work; and of the recent history of the theory and methods of archaeology itself. Part story of the human past, part soap opera of modern scholarly life, part textbook on the practice of modern archaeology, this book should appeal to general readers and archaeological students alike.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An analysis of later Stuart economic culture that contributes significantly to our understanding of early modern society. The English economy underwent profound changes in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, yet the worldly affairs of ordinary people continued to be shaped as much by traditional ideals and moral codes as by material conditions. This book explores the economic implications of many of the era's key concepts, including Christian stewardship, divine providence, patriarchal power, paternal duty, local community, and collective identity. Brodie Waddell drawson a wide range of contemporary sources - from ballads and pamphlets to pauper petitions and guild regulations - to show that such ideas pervaded every aspect of social and economic relations during this crucial period. Previous discussions of English economic life have tended to ignore or dismiss the influence of cultural factors. By contrast, Waddell argues that popular beliefs about divine will, social duty and communal bonds remained the frame through which most people viewed vital 'earthly' concerns such as food marketing, labour relations, trade policy, poor relief, and many others. This innovative study, demonstrating both the vibrancy and the diversity of the 'moral economies' of the later Stuart period, represents a significant contribution to our understanding of early modern society. It will be essential reading for all early modern British economic and cultural historians. BrodieWaddell is Leverhulme Early Career Fellow at the University of Cambridge. He has published on preaching, local government, the landscape and other aspects of early modern society.
