Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Diary of a Caregiver's Hell By: Just Joyce At the age of 3-1/2, Joyce became a foster child to Ethel and Blair Breitigam. They raised her on their Pennsylvania farm to adulthood. Little did Ethel and Blair know how their decision would not only change the rest of Joyce’s life, but have an impact on who would be there for them at the closing time of their lives. Ethel and Blair experienced 17+ years of progression through debilitating illnesses, frailty of body, becoming invalids, along with both of them having Alzheimer’s. Although these years seem to have been taken from Joyce, it has also been a selfless giving by Joyce to this man and woman she came to call Mom and Dad. With her real-world, down-to-earth, tell-it-like-it-is attitude, just maybe Joyce can help one or two caregivers out there who are finding their situation hard to deal with.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2009, my wife of over fifty-eight years was diagnosed with dementia with Alzheimers symptoms. My caregiving responsibilities began before that time and continued until her death in January 2018. She was provided care in her own home. As time went by, the caregiver duties became more and more demanding. It was truly twenty-four hours each day and seven days each week. My sweetheart was referred to the hospice program as a patient beginning in 2013 with a life expectancy of six months or less. At the time of her passing, she had been a hospice patient for four years, eleven months, and five days. The Diary of a Caregiver begins with her entry into the hospice program and continues until her death. Caregiving can be very frustrating at times as one never knows what to expect or when to expect it. The Diary of a Caregiver identifies many of the problems and frustrations associated with care of a dementia patient. It also identifies different techniques and solutions to some of those problems. It should be of interest to anyone who is involved in caregiving, especially those who are just beginning.

William and his wife, Dora, shared a beautiful marriage of fifty-four years when Alzheimer’s disease began to take a fierce grip on Dora’s health and mind. Intimate and deeply moving, William beautifully captures snippets of their daily interactions and conversations, revealing how this disease not only ravaged Dora’s mind and well-being but also challenged his relationship with his longtime love. William details his daily struggles as Dora’s sole caregiver as her disease progressed and as their marriage moved from a mutually supportive one to one that required William’s constant support and care. This diary details the harsh reality of Alzheimer’s while also capturing touching moments shared between a husband and wife. This story is an honest, often raw look at the effects of this disease, not only on the afflicted but on those who love them.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One year shy of her fiftieth wedding anniversary, Dee Hershberger was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. Her husband, Bob, serving as her primary caregiver, kept a journal the following four and a half years. Diary of an Alzheimer’s Caregiver provides an unflinchingly honest and heartbreaking account of what the couple went through. During the first two and a half years, Dee gradually lost short-term memory but maintained most physical and social abilities. Over the last two years she lost these abilities, most words, and long-term memory. She also became incontinent, suffered from undetected illnesses, and experienced psychotic episodes and uncontrollable, violent behavior. This is a brutally raw look at what it is like to lose a loved one to Alzheimer’s, including what the disease does to the patient and the effects it has on loved ones and caregivers. This personal view into caring for a spouse with Alzheimer’s will help readers understand the physical, emotional, and financial consequences of the disease, as well as provide support, advice, and hope to anyone in the same situation.

Caregivers of such patients often experience their own illnesses as a result of giving all of themselves to their loved ones. Stress, physical exhaustion, depression, changes in mental and physical health, and many more things are often side effects that come with caregiving. This journal will help caregivers with having a safe place to express their challenges, fears, and hopes. It offers prompts that will encourage a caregiver to think about caring for themselves in the same way that they are caring for the people or person they love.

Book excerpt: Drawing from groundbreaking research, psychologist and award-winning teacher Kelly McGonigal, PhD, offers a surprising new view of stress—one that reveals the upside of stress, and shows us exactly how to capitalize on its benefits. You hear it all the time: stress causes heart disease; stress causes insomnia; stress is bad for you! But what if changing how you think about stress could make you happier, healthier, and better able to reach your goals? Combining exciting new research on resilience and mindset, Kelly McGonigal, PhD, proves that undergoing stress is not bad for you; it is undergoing stress while believing that stress is bad for you that makes it harmful. In fact, stress has many benefits, from giving us greater focus and energy, to strengthening our personal relationships. McGonigal shows readers how to cultivate a mindset that embraces stress, and activate the brain's natural ability to learn from challenging experiences. Both practical and life-changing, The Upside of Stress is not a guide to getting rid of stress, but a toolkit for getting better at it—by understanding, accepting, and leveraging it to your advantage.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For Alison, life with her son Daniel sometimes seemed like an endless round of difficulties: disobedience, backchat, rudeness, name-calling and aggression. Upon starting school, where his aggression and lack of concentration concerned teachers, Daniel was given a vague diagnosis of borderline Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), which was later changed to ADHD with secondary Oppositional Defiant Disorder and autistic traits. In this honest account of the first 18 years of Daniel's life, Alison exposes her own worries, doubts, and exceptional courage at every pivotal turn in Daniel's life. Interspersing the narrative with tips and advice on what she has found useful - or not - in bringing up Daniel, Alison also provides encouraging guidance for teachers and fellow parents. This book also raises serious questions about how the education system supports children with special needs, and if medication can be the answer to managing ADHD in children.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Moral Injury is now recognized as a growing major problem for military men and women. Operant conditioning can overwhelm moral convictions and yet the question of whether "to shoot or not to shoot" often will never have a settled answer. Certain theories and treatment models about MI have been well developed, but too often overlook root issues of religious faith. The authors propose a new model for understanding moral injury and suggest ways to mitigate its virtually inevitable occurrence in pre-combat training, and ways to resolve MI post-trauma with proven spiritual resources. People outside the military, too, among whom the incidence of MI also is a growing threat, will benefit from this analysis. The stories of the injured--their shaping and their telling--are the key, and there are many illumining stories of moral injury and recovery. Those who suffer MI, their families, and caregivers, including counselors, pastors, and faith communities, will find hope-giving first steps toward the healing of MI in this book.
