Book Synopsis Brave New Digital Classroom, Second Edition by : Robert J. Blake
Download or read book Brave New Digital Classroom, Second Edition written by Robert J. Blake and published by Georgetown University Press. This book was released on 2013-03-28 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Brave New Digital Classroom examines the most effective ways to utilize technology in language learning. The author deftly interweaves the latest results of pedagogical research with descriptions of the most successful computer-assisted language learning (CALL) projects to show how to implement technology in the foreign-language curriculum to assist the second language acquisition process. This fully updated second edition includes new chapters on the latest electronic resources, including gaming and social media, and discusses the realities and potential of distance learning for second language acquisition. The author examines the web, CALL applications, and computer-mediated communication (CMC), and suggests how the new technologically assisted curriculum will work for the foreign-language curriculum. Rather than advocating new technologies as a replacement for activities that can be done equally well with traditional processes, the author envisions a radical change as teachers rethink their strategies and develop their competence in the effective use of technology in language teaching and learning. Directed at all language teachers, from the elementary school to postsecondary levels, the book is ideal for graduate-level courses on second language pedagogy. It also serves as an invaluable reference for experienced researchers, CALL developers, department chairs, and administrators.
Book Synopsis Past (Im)Perfect Continuous by : Alice Balestrino
Download or read book Past (Im)Perfect Continuous written by Alice Balestrino and published by Sapienza Università Editrice. This book was released on 2021-06-25 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Past (Im)perfect Continuous. Trans-Cultural Articulations of the Postmemory of WWII presents an international and interdisciplinary approach to the comprehension of the postmemory of WWII, accounting for a number of different intellectual trajectories that investigate WWII and the Holocaust as paradigms for other traumas within a global and multidirectional context. Indeed, by exceeding the geographical boundaries of nations and states and overcoming contextual specificities, postmemory foregrounds continuous, active, connective, transcultural, and always imperfect representations of violence that engage with the alterity of other histories and other subjects. 75 years after the end of WWII, this volume is primarily concerned with the convergence between postmemory and underexamined aspects of the history and aftermath of WWII, as well as with several sociopolitical anxieties and representational preoccupations. Drawing from different disciplines, the critical and visual works gathered in this volume interrogate the referential power of postmemory, considering its transcultural interplay with various forms, media, frames of reference, conceptual registers, and narrative structures.

Book excerpt: On August 23rd, 1926, silent film star Rudolph Valentino died unexpectedly at thirty-one-years of age. His sudden death inspired mass hysteria among his fans. His grieving fans were not the only ones to mourn. His business manager and close friend, George Ullman, was appointed executor of Valentino's estate and faced the daunting task of settling the movie star's complex postmortem affairs. In this role, Ullman would find himself a key character in a byzantine tale of betrayal and subterfuge involving moguls, Valentino's relatives and sinister collectors. Affairs Valentino is not only the story of George Ullman's affiliation with Valentino, but the revised, documented life story of Rudolph Valentino. Affairs Valentino is an expose of the dross written about Valentino, as well as the shady dealings and alliances of collectors and myth mongers. As a result of her discoveries of previously unpublished documents and Ullman's lost personal memoir, Ms. Zumaya challenges the currently held studio-generated version of Rudolph Valentino's personal and professional life. Book Synopsis Homosexuality and Italian Cinema by : Mauro Giori
Download or read book Homosexuality and Italian Cinema written by Mauro Giori and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-11-18 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first to establish the relevance of same-sex desires, pleasures and anxieties in the cinema of post-war Italy. It explores cinematic representations of homosexuality and their significance in a wider cultural struggle in Italy involving society, cinema, and sexuality between the 1940s and 1970s. Besides tracing the evolution of representations through both art and popular films, this book also analyses connections with consumer culture, film criticism and politics. Giori uncovers how complicated negotiations between challenges to and valorization of dominant forms of knowledge of homosexuality shaped representations and argues that they were not always the outcome of hatred but also sought to convey unmentionable pleasures and complicities. Through archival research and a survey of more than 600 films, the author enriches our understanding of thirty years of Italian film and cultural history.
Book Synopsis Why Architects Still Draw by : Paolo Belardi
Download or read book Why Architects Still Draw written by Paolo Belardi and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2014-02-14 with total page 133 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An architect's defense of drawing as a way of thinking, even in an age of electronic media. Why would an architect reach for a pencil when drawing software and AutoCAD are a click away? Use a ruler when 3D-scanners and GPS devices are close at hand? In Why Architects Still Draw, Paolo Belardi offers an elegant and ardent defense of drawing by hand as a way of thinking. Belardi is no Luddite; he doesn't urge architects to give up digital devices for watercolors and a measuring tape. Rather, he makes a case for drawing as the interface between the idea and the work itself. A drawing, Belardi argues, holds within it the entire final design. It is the paradox of the acorn: a project emerges from a drawing—even from a sketch, rough and inchoate—just as an oak tree emerges from an acorn. Citing examples not just from architecture but also from literature, chemistry, music, archaeology, and art, Belardi shows how drawing is not a passive recording but a moment of invention pregnant with creative possibilities. Moving from the sketch to the survey, Belardi explores the meaning of measurement in a digital era. A survey of a site should go beyond width, height, and depth; it must include two more dimensions: history and culture. Belardi shows the sterility of techniques that value metric exactitude over cultural appropriateness, arguing for an “informed drawing” that takes into consideration more than meters or feet, stone or steel. Even in the age of electronic media, Belardi writes, drawing can maintain its role as a cornerstone of architecture.
