This plodding along afoot is dry business, compared with horse-back traveling."Regimental histories provide some of the most exciting and interesting details about life during the American Civil War.This one is compiled by members of the 103rd Illinois from letters and diaries of the men who served in that regiment. Sometimes the smallest details are the most important to the simple soldier."Gen. Logan stopped by me and said: 'It's all right, damn it, isn't it?' I returned: 'It's all right, General.'"The 103rd was attached to Grant's army in the west and supported Grierson's raid. They were then shifted to Sherman's army and were with him to the end of the war, including Atlanta and in the Carolina's campaign. In 1864, one soldier wrote in his diary:"This is the 68th day of the campaign. We hope to end it by Aug. 1st, though if we can end the war by continuing this till Jan. 1st, '65, I am in."Every memoir of the American Civil War provides us with another view of the catastrophe that changed the country forever.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reminiscences of the Civil War From Diaries of Members of the 103d Illinois Volunteer Infantry, 1904 Comrades: In placing this book in your hands the duty of your Committee is finished. Whether it is poorly or well done, is for you to say. When one considers that it is more than thirty-nine years since we were "mustered out" of the service, he will realize the difficulties we labored under. Papers and documents that were plenty even thirty-five years ago are lost. We have had access to The Rebellion Records, General Orders, and histories of other organizations, as well as diaries of our own Comrades, but in many cases they did not agree. The difficulties of arriving at the truth were greater than one would suppose. A guarantee fund for the cost of publication was secured from the Comrades and their Friends. As none of the Committee are in any degree "literary," the work must be a real failure in that respect, but as a record of what we saw, and did, it is worth all it costs. That there will be many errors, there can be no doubt, but we hope they will do no one serious injury, or injustice. It will at least show the few who may take the trouble to read it the part we took, when the Volunteer Army of the United States saved the Nation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of the Fifty-Fifth Regiment Illinois Volunteer Infantry in the Civil War, 1861-1865 The following unambitious pages have been written at the solicitation and for the gratification of a little brotherhood of war-scorched and time-harried survivors of one of the regiments constituting General William Tecumseh Sherman's first Western brigade; a regiment that followed him from the drill-ground of 1861 at St. Louis, to the triumphal review at Washington in 1865; that earned by sacrifice rarely equalled the right to inscribe upon its banner the names of nearly all the famous battle-fields whereon Sherman had any command, from Shiloh to Bentonville; that left graves of its battle-martyrs in the soil of eight rebellious commonwealths; that during the four years of its service travelled nearly twelve thousand miles, campaigning in every state south of Mason and Dixon's line, save three at the extreme corners of the Confederacy - Delaware, Florida and Texas. The three comrades detailed to share the composition of this volume are severally responsible for the opinions advanced in, and the fashion of, their own portions only of the narrative, and to each individually belongs the praise or blame due to his special contribution. Their labors have been entirely gratuitous. Their facts have been gleaned from every available source, but chiefly from careful collation of numerous army letters and diaries of soldiers. Download or read book In the Very Thickest of the Fight written by Steve Raymond and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2012-09-04 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 78th Illinois Volunteer Infantry Regiment took the field under command of a lackadaisical colonel who was frequently absent and feuded with his own officers and superiors. Distrusted by senior officers, the 78th became a regiment that was always left behind—until its own officers forced their reluctant colonel to resign. His replacement was a forceful leader who turned the regiment into a crack fighting outfit that performed heroically in the battle of Chickamauga and many of the great battles of the Atlanta campaign. It later joined Sherman’s March to the Sea and fought its way out of the tangled swamps of Bentonville in one of the war’s last battles. Its story is told here mostly in the words of its soldiers through letters, diaries and other sources, many never before accessed by historians. This book sheds new light on many important incidents and battles in the Civil War’s Western Theater.
