Book Synopsis The Sarashina Diary by : Sugawara no Takasue no Musume
Download or read book The Sarashina Diary written by Sugawara no Takasue no Musume and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2018-03-20 with total page 99 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A thousand years ago, a young Japanese girl embarked on a journey from deep in the countryside of eastern Japan to the capital. Forty years later, with the long account of that journey as a foundation, the mature woman skillfully created an autobiography that incorporates many moments of heightened awareness from her long life. Married at age thirty-three, she identified herself as a reader and writer more than as a wife and mother; enthralled by fiction, she bore witness to the dangers of romantic fantasy as well as the enduring consolation of self-expression. This reader’s edition streamlines Sonja Arntzen and Moriyuki Itō’s acclaimed translation of the Sarashina Diary for general readers and classroom use. This translation captures the lyrical richness of the original text while revealing its subtle structure and ironic meaning, highlighting the author’s deep concern for Buddhist belief and practice and the juxtaposition of poetic passages and narrative prose. The translators’ commentary offers insight into the author’s family and world, as well as the style, structure, and textual history of her work.

Book Synopsis A Bridge between Conceptual Frameworks by : Raffaele Pisano
Download or read book A Bridge between Conceptual Frameworks written by Raffaele Pisano and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 621 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyzes scientific problems within the history of physics, engineering, chemistry, astronomy and medicine, correlated with technological applications in the social context. When and how is tension between disciplines explicitly practised? What is the conceptual bridge between science researches and the organization of technological researches in the development of industrial applications? The authors explain various ways in which the sciences allowed advanced modelling on the one hand, and the development of new technological ideas on the other hand. An emphasis on the role played by mechanisms, production methods and instruments bestows a benefit on historical and scientific discourse: theories, institutions, universities, schools for engineers, social implications as well. Scholars from different traditions discuss the emergency style of thinking in methodology and, in theoretical perspective, aim to gather and re-evaluate the current thinking on this subject. It brings together contributions from leading experts in the field, and gives much-needed insight into the subject from a historical point of view. The volume composition makes for absorbing reading for historians, philosophers and scientists.

The book is arranged topically in a series of short, accessible chapters for easy access and reference, giving insight into both canonical texts and many lesser known, popular genres, from centuries-old folk literature to the detective fiction of modern times. The various period introductions provide an overview of recurrent issues that span many decades, if not centuries. The book also places Japanese literature in a wider East Asian tradition of Sinitic writing and provides comprehensive coverage of women's literature as well as new popular literary forms, including manga (comic books). An extensive bibliography of works in English enables readers to continue to explore this rich tradition through translations and secondary reading.

This book was released on 2024-11-04 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Human existence is fundamentally defined by time. Throughout history and across cultures, societies have negotiated time in various ways. This monograph studies temporality as it emerges from diaries produced by government officials during the late thirteenth century in Japan, thereby contributing a perspective gleaned from non-literary texts to the study of time in the social sphere of noble elites in the Kamakura period. In synthesising different approaches to the study of time, it analyses various aspects of time to obtain a comprehensive picture of how time is expressed in these diaries, scrutinise the time practices that they disclose, and reflect on related conceptualisations and evaluations of time. The monograph argues that we may discern a plurality of coexisting modes of time and that certain aspects and concerns took precedence over others in different situations depending on the symbolic forms that dominated them. As part of the 'Time in Medieval Japan' (TIMEJ) research project of the University of Zurich, this research aims to contribute to a more nuanced understanding of medieval Japan as multi-faceted society with diverse approaches to time.
Book Synopsis Diaries of Court Ladies of Old Japan (Classic Reprint) by : Annie Shepley Omori
Download or read book Diaries of Court Ladies of Old Japan (Classic Reprint) written by Annie Shepley Omori and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-25 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Diaries of Court Ladies of Old Japan Izumi Shikibu's Diary is written with extreme delicacy of treatment. English words and thought seem too downright a medium into which to ren der these evanescent, half-expressed sentences and poems - vague as the misty mountain scenery of her country, with no pronouns at all, and without Verb inflections. The shy reserve of the lady's writ ten record has induced the use of the third person as the best means of suggesting it.
