Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As she prepared for bed, Diana was feeling pretty satisfied with herself. She had managed to put a little dent in Davi's normally calm exterior; something she hadn't had the opportunity to do in far too many years. The Trouble Twins had pushed Davi beyond endurance quite a few times. It had been Davi who had given them that name and they’d become rather proud of it. But when he called them disease and pestilence, they knew they had gone too far and scampered away as far as they could get. Diana snuggled under the covers and bid her sister good night, but she was far from sleepy. She was home, Will was home and Thomas would be here in the next day or two. They would finally all be together. Not for long, she knew. Will would return to Dilham with Grandfather, Thomas would be knighted and enter the king's service (another price paid for supposedly supporting Richard III) and Elizabeth would journey to Fallonslair to foster with Cousin Catherine. Only she and Hal would be left. Diana sighed and rolled over, twitching the covers securely around her shoulders once more. She had learned long ago to make the best of any situation and could not let herself be gloomy when all was right with her world. And Davi? Diana was surprised when he popped back into her thoughts. There must be a reason she would think of him now. Of course, Davi had been like a member of the family since before she was born. In fact, her father had actually saved his life some twenty years before. But he was still a young man, not a blood relative, and most decidedly good-looking. Considering his reaction to her earlier, he might be a good candidate to practice her womanly wiles. Not that she had many wiles with which to practice, but she had to start somewhere. With a very satisfied smile at her newest and most daring plan ever, Diana fell peacefully asleep.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an overview of Animal-Assisted Activities (AAA) and Animal-Assisted Therapy (AAT) and demonstrates how they can be incorporated into solution-focused treatment programs. Pichot, focusing on the use of therapy dogs, starts with a discussion of the basics of AAA/T and solution-focused therapy, as well as what every practitioner should know about dogs before partnering with them. Successfully combining all of this into an effective treatment program is considered next. Pichot draws upon her own experience developing an AAA/T program in the substance abuse counseling program at a county public health agency to illustrate the effective implementation of such a program and the struggles and lessons learned in doing so. Using AAA/T with special populations, cultural considerations, and the impact a therapy dog can have on the handler. New in this edition are client scenarios that demonstrate the therapist’s thought process when making clinical decisions about when and how to use a therapy dog. Sample forms and treatment plans are also provided that professionals can use to modify or structure in their work with clients. The concepts and information provided in this valuable guide will be helpful for any therapist regardless of whether he or she is in private practice or working in an agency setting.

Book excerpt: The 1940s saw a brief audacious experiment in mass entertainment: a jukebox with a screen. Patrons could insert a dime, then listen to and watch such popular entertainers as Nat "King" Cole, Gene Krupa, Cab Calloway or Les Paul. A number of companies offered these tuneful delights, but the most successful was the Mills Novelty Company and its three-minute musical shorts called Soundies. This book is a complete filmography of 1,880 Soundies: the musicians heard and seen on screen, recording and filming dates, arrangers, soloists, dancers, entertainment trade reviews and more. Additional filmographies cover more than 80 subjects produced by other companies. There are 125 photos taken on film sets, along with advertising images and production documents. More than 75 interviews narrate the firsthand experiences and recollections of Soundies directors and participants. Forty years before MTV, the Soundies were there for those who loved the popular music of the 1940s. This was truly "music for the eyes."

Book excerpt: Gypsies, Egyptians, Romanies, and—more recently—Travellers. Who are these marginal and mysterious people who first arrived in England in early Tudor times? Are claims of their distant origins on the Indian subcontinent true, or just another of the many myths and stories that have accreted around them over time? Can they even be regarded as a single people or ethnicity at all? Gypsies have frequently been vilified, and not much less frequently romanticized, by the settled population over the centuries. Social historian David Cressy now attempts to disentangle the myth from the reality of Gypsy life over more than half a millennium of English history. In this, the first comprehensive historical study of the doings and dealings of Gypsies in England, he draws on original archival research, and a wide range of reading, to trace the many moments when Gypsy lives became entangled with those of villagers and townsfolk, religious and secular authorities, and social and moral reformers. Crucially, it is a story not just of the Gypsy community and its peculiarities, but also of England's treatment of that community, from draconian Elizabethan statutes, through various degrees of toleration and fascination, right up to the tabloid newspaper campaigns against Gypsy and Traveller encampments of more recent years.

Book excerpt: A rich Cypriot gangster hires flying winemaker Richard Green to find a mysterious vineyard somewhere in Eastern Europe. A vicious new Capitalism is devouring the post-Communist Balkan states, where anything goes, and where women like Green's accent. God destroyed Eden, where men's lives spanned a thousand years, and limited Noah's tribe to a mere 120 years, the Bible says. But one tribe evaded this limit: the 'immortal' Greek Gods, the tribe of Gaia. They ruled the World until the Christians came, and declared them to be Demons, agents of Satan. Now, mere mortals threaten to discover Nectar, secret of the god's longevity. But Gaia is already burdened with too many greedy mortals! Surely she must act to punish their Hubris. The action moves to the Eastern Mediterranean, where several plots interweave: Aphrodite, the Goddess of Lust, kidnapped for a ransom of drugs; a son of Zeus plots to fulfil an ancient prophecy to usurp Zeus's throne; and the mortal hero's personal odyssey.

Book excerpt: Gypsies have lived in England since the early sixteenth century, yet considerable confusion and disagreement remain over the precise identity of the group. The question 'Who are the Gypsies?' is still asked and the debates about the positioning and permanence of the boundary between Gypsy and non-Gypsy are contested as fiercely today as at any time before. This study locates these debates in their historical perspective, tracing the origins and reproduction of the various ways of defining and representing the Gypsy from the early sixteenth century to the present day. Starting with a consideration of the early modern description of Gypsies as Egyptians, land pirates and vagabonds, the volume goes on to examine the racial classification of the nineteenth century and the emergence of the ethnic Gypsy in the twentieth century. The book closes with an exploration of the long-lasting image of the group as vagrant and parasitic nuisances which spans the whole period from 1500 to 2000.

Book excerpt: The startling, vivid debut novel by Alexey Navalny’s press secretary, following a woman who is arrested at an anti-corruption rally in Moscow and sentenced to ten days in a special detention center, where she shares a cell with five other women from all walks of life The Incredible Events in Women’s Cell Number 3 is the debut novel by Kira Yarmysh that follows a young woman, Anya, who is arrested at a Moscow anti-corruption rally, and, under false charges, sentenced to a ten-day stretch at a special detention center. In a large barren room furnished only with communal bunkbeds, Anya meets her cellmates: five ordinary Russian women arrested on petty charges. They come from all strata and experiences of Russian society, and as they pass the long hours waiting to be released, they slowly build trust and companionship while sipping lukewarm tea from plastic cups and playing games. Above all, they talk: about politics, feminism, their families, their sexualities, and how to make the most of prison life. Yet as the waking days stretch listlessly before Anya, soon she is plagued by strange nightmarish visions and begins to wonder if her cellmates might not actually be as ordinary as they seem. Will the façade of everyday life ultimately crack for good? A brilliant exploration of what it means to be marginalized both as an independent woman in general and in an increasingly intolerant Russia in particular, and a powerful prison story that renews a grand Russian tradition, The Incredible Events in Women’s Cell Number 3 introduces one of the most urgent and gripping new voices in international literature.

There's no two ways about it - Frankie Fraser. I made Billy Hill. Then he got over the top of me. I should have shot Billy Hill. I really should. I'd have got ten years for it but it would have made me happy and I'd be out now - laughing - Jack Spot. I have no doubt that during his career Hill had some very senior officers in his pocket - Leonard 'Nipper' Read, legendary Scotland Yard detective. Billy Hill was Britain's first celebrity gangster. Born in London's impoverished Seven Dials, by the early 1950's he had control of the city's gambling rackets and masterminded a heist that set the template for the Great Train Robbery. He ruled the roost in the bloody era when the underworld's choice of weapon was the open razor. His violent clashes with onetime ally turned enemy Jack Spot became the stuff of legend, as Hill and his henchmen left the streets of Soho running red. But Hill was astute enough to choose his moment to get out, abdicating in favour of his gun-toting young protégés, the Kray twins . . . In this fast-moving biography, Wensley Clarkson charts the life of the only post-war British villain to truly make crime pay.
