Book excerpt: Diamonds and death-a combination Petra Paris never expected in her quest to exonerate her father of fraud charges. Petra is a headstrong geologist assigned to a Canadian diamond mine that is accessible only by plane. But the beautiful diamond hunter becomes the hunted. Unwittingly she has landed in a nest of smugglers who are becoming increasingly desperate to escape with millions in uncut stolen diamonds. She's in their way. Seth, a cop with the RCMP Diamond Protection Unit undercover as a pilot, has wangled his way into the mine complex by posing as Petra's boyfriend. She agrees to share a bedroom as long as he in turn protects her while she collects proof of her father's innocence. That means working around the clock to meet the deadline. To her frustration, there's almost no time for another type of exploration, that of the cop's rock-hard body. But murder changes everything. The remote mine complex becomes a death trap, and lust on many levels threatens to consume them all.
Book Synopsis Introduction to Mineralogy by : Carl W. Correns
Download or read book Introduction to Mineralogy written by Carl W. Correns and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 490 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first edition of this book has been out of print for seven years. The ques tion as to whether a new edition should be produced was answered affirmatively on many counts. I think that the considerations which led me to write this book in 1949 are still valid (see Preface to the First Edition). Moreover, a description of those areas of interest which together comprise the field of Mineralogy seems to be more necessary than ever, because of the rapid advances which have been made. Due to the rapid extension of our knowledge, I did not dare again to treat the whole field by myself. Accordingly, Professor ZEMANN kindly agreed to revise the first part of the book dealing with Crystallography. He made many important corrections. In Part II the basic question arose as to whether the physical-chemical approach to rock forming processes, becoming more and more important, required inclusive treatment of the fundamentals of physical chemistry in the book. I see certain dangers in trying to produce a petrology text which is physical chemically self-sufficient. Thus, I retain the same opinion which prevailed when I wrote the previous edition; namely that the necessary basic knowledge should be acquired in lectures and laboratory classes in physics, chemistry, and physical chemistry, and with the help of standard literature dealing with these subjects. This back ground is, therefore, presumed and fundamentals are only referred to occasionally.

Local authorities quickly deduce that the bears were used as a diversion by drug smugglers, but Venus is skeptical and follows up on lead after lead until all she has to go on is a distinctive diamond ring off a dead informant's hand. The ring leads her to a diamond mine in Northern Canada, where she discovers that a priceless blue diamond had been found and kept secret. Download or read book The Cult of Tara written by Stephan Beyer and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2023-11-10 with total page 574 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The real history of man is the history of religion." The truth of the famous dictum of Max Muller, the father of the History of Religions, is nowhere so obvious as in Tibet. Western students have observed that religion and magic pervade not only the forms of Tibetan art, politics, and society, but also every detail of ordinary human existence. And what is the all-pervading religion of Tibet? The Buddhism of that country has been described to us, of course, but that does not mean the question has been answered. The unique importance of Stephan Beyerís work is that it presents the vital material ignored or slighted by others: the living ritual of Tibetan Buddhists. The reader is made a witness to cultic proceedings through which the author guides him carefully. He does not force one to accept easy explanations nor does he direct one's attention only to aspects that can be counted on to please. He leads one step by step, without omitting anything, through entire rituals, and interprets whenever necessary without being unduly obtrusive. Oftentimes, as in the case of the many hymns to the goddess Tara, the superb translations speak directly to the reader, and it is indeed as if the reader himself were present at the ritual.

Book Synopsis A Century of Swindles by : Railey Jane Savage
Download or read book A Century of Swindles written by Railey Jane Savage and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2021-09-01 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Gilded Age through WWII, America was rife with ne’er-do-wells on a never-ending search for the next big score. Between 1850 and 1950 lawlessness melded with ingenuity, fueled by optimism and ruthlessness: America was dangerous, buzzing, and where opportunity came to take flight. The perfect conditions for swindlers. The gall and gumption of their hustles strain credulity. Fake diamond fields? War with Canada? Sir Francis Drake’s unclaimed fortune? Apparently, all was fair in the quest for something-for-nothing. The scammers in this volume range from the undeniably unscrupulous, to the ill and ill-advised. Fans of clever schemes and schadenfreude alike will be entertained by these tales of the rise and fall of some of America’s greatest swindlers.
Book Synopsis The Diamonds of Kronos by : Andrew Dequasie
Download or read book The Diamonds of Kronos written by Andrew Dequasie and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2000-09-21 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Other books have been written about battles between humans and creatures from outer space. So, what's different about this one? Well, the aliens in this case know a great deal about planet Earth and its human population, but their info is disastrously out of date. It's a war in which tactics make all the difference and the aliens would have found peaceful cooperation a far more useful thing than the battle. As a side issue, these highly intelligent aliens have evolved on a planet where oxygen and water are rare. Impossible? Not at all. The author's thesis on this point is that life can evolve anywhere there is an energy source the life form can use. In each case, the life form evolves so as to use the available energy source and, therefore, is very dependant on it, just as we depend on oxygen and water.

Download or read book Querida written by Nathan Xavier Osorio and published by University of Pittsburgh Press. This book was released on 2024-09-10 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Querida offers a place-based lyrical meditation on the poet’s immigrant parents, collective memory, language, and family in the San Fernando region of Los Angeles, California. Through a constellation of interweaving persona poems, confessional reflections, imagistic portraits of people and places, and decolonial poetic rituals—braided with a crown of sonnets—a choir of speakers navigate the fraught inheritance of memory frayed by the generational trauma of migration, coloniality, and the exploitative labor of late-stage capitalism. Swaying between maximalist and carnivalesque textual decadence and sparse, brutalist, bilingual inquiries into language as yet another exploitative and extractive tool for control, these poems honor familial and community wisdom as the only way to survive the steadily destabilizing Capitalocene.
Book Synopsis More Information Than You Require by : John Hodgman
Download or read book More Information Than You Require written by John Hodgman and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2012-10-02 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The New York Times bestseller by Famous Minor Television Personality John Hodgman—The Daily Show's "Resident Expert" and the "PC" in the iconic Apple ads—picks up exactly where his first book left off. In fact, "the new volume is in every way a continuation of Areas of My Expertise, except in the ways it's clearly superior." (The Onion AV Club) In 2005, John Hodgman published his first compendium of Complete World Knowledge, The Areas of My Expertise, a handy volume of fake trivia and made-up facts. Hodgmania was born. Virtually overnight, John Hodgman was whisked from tweedy obscurity to the high ether of minor celebrity. And from his strange new vantage point as a Famous Minor Television Personality, Hodgman realized that there is some world knowledge yet to be documented. And so he returned to exactly where he had left off—namely, page 256 of the paperback edition of The Areas of My Expertise. And he brought with him: MORE INFORMATION THAN YOU REQUIRE. Which, naturally, begins on page 257. Like its predecessor, More Information Than You Require consists of brief articles, overlong lists, frighteningly complex charts, and beguiling narratives on new and familiar themes such as: THE PAST (because there is always more of it) THE FUTURE (because they say there is still some left) MOLE-MEN (including a list of 700 Mole-man names) GAMBLING, THE SPORT OF THE ATHSMATIC MAN (including hermit crab racing) CRYPTOGEOGRAPHY (including Canada) HOW TO BE A FAMOUS MINOR TELEVISION PERSONALITY (Hint: Go on television) AND NOW, the relatively pocket-sized and inexpensive paperback edition includes even more. MORE INFORMATION THAN YOU REQUIRE, updated to include the very latest in implausibility. PLUS!: This paperback edition includes a special self-expanding fold-out edition of THE TAXONOMY OF COMPLETE WORLD KNOWLEDGE, which you have probably never seen before because it has been carefully hidden. UNTIL NOW. Look out for John Hodgman's latest book, Vacationland, available from Viking in Fall 2017.
