Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this rich interdisciplinary study, Sujani Reddy examines the consequential lives of Indian nurses whose careers have unfolded in the contexts of empire, migration, familial relations, race, and gender. As Reddy shows, the nursing profession developed in India against a complex backdrop of British and U.S. imperialism. After World War II, facing limited vocational options at home, a growing number of female nurses migrated from India to the United States during the Cold War. Complicating the long-held view of Indian women as passive participants in the movement of skilled labor in this period, Reddy demonstrates how these "women in the lead" pursued new opportunities afforded by their mobility. At the same time, Indian nurses also confronted stigmas based on the nature of their "women's work," the religious and caste differences within the migrant community, and the racial and gender hierarchies of the United States. Drawing on extensive archival research and compelling life-history interviews, Reddy redraws the map of gender and labor history, suggesting how powerful global forces have played out in the personal and working lives of professional Indian women.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With Loving Care is a book that describes the history of the American Province of the Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ from the time of its founding by five sisters who came from Germany to Hessen Cassel, Indiana, to serve the German-speaking people of Northwestern Indiana until the present day. The book was written to outline the efforts of the sisters with the people of the different geographic areas throughout Northern Indiana, all through Illinois and the states of Wisconsin and Minnesota. Wherever the sisters ministered, they also attracted other young women to join them, either as vowed members or as associates who would also serve the people following the charism of Catherine Kasper. The work of the sisters was in the general fields of health care, education, and childcare. As time went on, the apostolates expanded to include parish ministry, retreat ministry, and individual types of service with the people.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1987, The Dynamics of Cultural Nationalism demonstrates the nature and role of cultural nationalism as a separate movement in the creation of modern nations. This is done through an intensive study of the modern Irish movements, and in particular the Gaelic revival at the end of the nineteenth century, which makes clear the importance of cultural nationalism as a vision and politics in its own right. The author, by approaching his material as both historian and sociologist, is able to illuminate the Irish case of nationalism by placing it in a broad, comparative perspective, showing how cultural nationalism has often provided those answers to the problems of nation building and the rediscovery of national identity that political nationalism failed to provide. This book will be of interest to all those in the social sciences and history who are concerned with problems of national identity, the uses of history and culture in the creation of modern nations, and the particular case of the development of nationalist movements in Ireland.
