Book Synopsis Justification by Faith in Catholic-Protestant Dialogue by : Anthony N. S. Lane
Download or read book Justification by Faith in Catholic-Protestant Dialogue written by Anthony N. S. Lane and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2006-06-10 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this assessment of the recent Catholic-Protestant dialogue concerning the doctrine of justification, Anthony Lane begins by discussing traditional Protestant doctrine with close reference to Calvin, and traditional Catholic doctrine with close reference to the Council of Trent. He goes on to examine eight key documents, from Hans Kung's Justification (1957) to the Joint Declaration on the Doctrine of Justification (1999). Fifteen key theological issues are then explored. These include the status of theological language used by Catholics and Evangelicals, the definition of justification, the grounds on which a person is accounted righteous, the question of sin remaining in the Christian, whether faith alone can save, the relationship between law and gospel, the question of merit and reward, the assurance of salvation and finally, a discussion on the Roman Magisterium and current Evangelical responses to recent changes in Catholic theology. In conclusion, Anthony Lane discusses the extent to which any agreement or convergence of thinking has been achieved, and its future significance.

Download or read book Joint Declaration on the Doctrine of Justification written by Lutheran World Federation and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2000 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents in English the official Joint Declaration on the Doctrine of Justification, confirmed by the Lutheran World Federation and the Roman Catholic Church in Augsburg, Germany, in October 1999. The result of decades of Lutheran-Roman Catholic dialogue, this primary document represents an ecumenical event of historical significance. Included in the volume are the Joint Declaration on the Doctrine of Justification and the Official Common Statement with its Annex. These texts are recommended for careful study in seminaries and parishes and for reading by individual Christians. It is hoped that the Joint Declaration will deepen understanding of the biblical message of justification and also serve to further reflection within the wider ecumenical movement.

Download or read book The Gospel of Justification in Christ written by Wayne Stumme and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2006 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On 31 October, 1999, exactly four hundred and eighty-two years after Martin Luther nailed his ninety-five theses to the church door in Wittenberg, the Roman Catholic Church and the Worldwide Lutheran Federation signed a historic joint declaration on the doctrine of justification. Recent agreements between Lutheran, Reformed, and Episcopalian churches have also expressed a shared commitment the doctrine of God's grace in Christ. But what does it mean for churches today? Persuaded that the "doctrine" of justification is also "gospel" -- the good news of life in Christ -- the contributors to "The Gospel of Justification in Christ" engage broadly with this crucial doctrine, addressing such topics as the unity of the Church, justification's relation to social justice, and its significance for interfaith dialogue.
Book Synopsis The Role of Justification in Contemporary Theology by : Mark C. Mattes
Download or read book The Role of Justification in Contemporary Theology written by Mark C. Mattes and published by Augsburg Books. This book was released on 2017-01-01 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this significant book Mark C. Mattes critically evaluates the role of justification in the theologies of five leading Protestant thinkers -- Eberhard Jungel, Wolfhart Pannenberg, Jurgen Moltmann, Robert W. Jenson, and Oswald Bayer -- pointing out their respective strengths and weaknesses and showing how each matches up with Luther's own views. Offering both an excellent review of recent trends in Christian theology and a powerful analysis of these trends, Mattes points readers to the various ways in which the doctrine of justification has been applied today. Despite the greatness of their thought, Jungel, Pannenberg, and Moltmann each accommodate the doctrine of justification to goals aligned with secular modernity. Both Jenson and Bayer, on the other hand, construe the doctrine of justification in a nonaccommodating way, thus challenging the secularity of the modern academy. In the end, Mattes argues that Bayer's position is to be preferred as closest to Luther's own, and he shows why it offers the greatest potential for confronting current attempts at self-justification before God.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Christian doctrine of justification is of immense interest to historians and theologians, and continues to be of major importance in modern ecumenical discussions. The present work appeared in its first edition in 1986, and rapidly became the leading reference work on the subject. Its many acclaimed features include a detailed assessment of the semantic background of the concept in the ancient Near East, a thorough examination of the doctrine of the medieval period, and especially careful analysis of its development during the critical years of the sixteenth century. The third edition thoroughly updates the work, adding material where necessary, and responding to developments in scholarly literature. It will be an essential resource for all concerned with the development of Christian doctrine, the history of the Reformation debates on the identity of Christianity, and modern discussions between Protestants and Roman Catholics over the nature of salvation.

Download or read book Justification written by Hans Küng and published by Westminster John Knox Press. This book was released on 2004-01-01 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now, forty years since its original publication, Hans Kung's groundbreaking study--acclaimed as a model for ecumenical discussion--has become a classic work. Looking at the doctrine of justification as understood by the Protestant theologian Karl Barth in comparison to classic Roman Catholic theology, Kung found that the two had similar ideas about the main elements of justification. He argued there is fundamental agreement between Catholicism and Barth's doctrine and that the somewhat divergent viewpoints "would not warrant a division in the Church." This anniversary edition now features a new essay assessing Kung's work in light of contemporary ecumenical dialogues between Roman Catholics and Protestants.
