Book excerpt: Philosophising the Dialogos Way towards Wisdom in Education proposes the innovative and holistic Dialogos approach to practical philosophy as a way of facilitating wisdom-oriented pedagogy. The book encourages individual and collective development through dialectical interplays between personal life, philosophical concepts and subject matter. Based on two decades of the author’s reflective pedagogical practice research, this book develops a philosophy of dialogical relationships. It analyses approaches to philosophical practice and suggests facilitation moves and philosophical exercises that can be adapted across educational levels, school subjects and higher education disciplines. Chapters provide examples of transformative philosophical group dialogues and suggest pathways towards multi perspective thinking, mutual understanding and wisdom in culturally diverse contexts. Philosophising the Dialogos Way towards Wisdom in Education can be used as a holistic approach to democracy education, peace education, education for sustainable living and wellbeing. The book will be of great interest to academics, researchers and students in the fields of teacher education, philosophy of education and higher education. It will also appeal to practising professionals such as teachers and teacher educators in secondary and higher education.

This is the main conviction of philosophical practitioners. Philosophical practice has been developing as a new movement within philosophy for several decades now, although it has ancient roots. Today, there are philosophical practitioners throughout the world who exchange ideas and experience in journals and during regular international conferences, such as the 14th International Conference on Philosophical Practice, which took place in Bern, Switzerland, in 2016 under the main topic “Understanding the Other and Oneself.” A selection of thirteen papers from this conference, as well as five panel contributions on various subjects regarding its main topic, are gathered in this book. These contributions to the conference will be of significance and interest not only for philosophers and philosophical practitioners, but also for psychotherapists, counsellors, pedagogues and other professionals.

Book Synopsis Dialogue Concerning the Two Chief World Systems by : Galileo
Download or read book Dialogue Concerning the Two Chief World Systems written by Galileo and published by Modern Library. This book was released on 2001-10-02 with total page 642 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Galileo’s Dialogue Concerning the Two Chief World Systems, published in Florence in 1632, was the most proximate cause of his being brought to trial before the Inquisition. Using the dialogue form, a genre common in classical philosophical works, Galileo masterfully demonstrates the truth of the Copernican system over the Ptolemaic one, proving, for the first time, that the earth revolves around the sun. Its influence is incalculable. The Dialogue is not only one of the most important scientific treatises ever written, but a work of supreme clarity and accessibility, remaining as readable now as when it was first published. This edition uses the definitive text established by the University of California Press, in Stillman Drake’s translation, and includes a Foreword by Albert Einstein and a new Introduction by J. L. Heilbron.

Book Synopsis The Making of Portuguese Democracy by : Kenneth Maxwell
Download or read book The Making of Portuguese Democracy written by Kenneth Maxwell and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1995-09-07 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This vividly-written book is the first comprehensive assessment of the origins of the present-day democratic regime in Portugal to be placed in a broad international historical context. After a vibrant account of the collapse of the old regime in 1974, it studies the complex revolutionary period that followed, and the struggle in Europe and Africa to define the future role of Europe's then poorest country. International repercussions are examined and comparisons are drawn with the more general collapse of communism in the late 1980s.

Book Synopsis On the Law of Peace by : Christine Bell
Download or read book On the Law of Peace written by Christine Bell and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2008-09-25 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive analysis of the use of peace agreements from a legal perspective. It describes and evaluates the development of contemporary peace processes and the peace agreements that emerge. The book sets out what is in essence an anatomy of peace agreement practice and interrogates its relationship to law. At its heart the book grapples with the role of law in ending violent conflict and the broader questions this raises for the relationship of law to social change. Law potentially plays two key roles with respect to peace agreements: first, to the extent that peace agreements themselves form legal documents, law plays a role in the 'enforcement' or implementation of the peace agreement; second, international law has a relationship to peace agreement negotiation and content, in its regulatory guise. International Law regulates self-determination, transitional justice, and the role of third parties. The book documants and analyses these two roles of law. In doing so, the book reveals a complex dynamic relationship between the peace agreement as a legal document and the role of international law in which international law and concepts of domestic constitutionalism are being re-shaped. The practice of negotiating peace agreements is argued to be producing a new law of the peacemaker-or lex pacificatoria that connects developments in international law with new forms of domestic constitutional law in a set of hybrid relationships. This law of the peacemaker potentially forms part of a broader 'law of peace' that moves beyond the traditional concept of law of peace as merely 'the rest of international law' once the laws of war are subtracted. The new lex pacificatoria stands as an account of the way in which international law shapes and is shaped by peace agreements. The book proposes an ambivalent response to 'this new law' which connects to contemporary debates about the force of international law and its appropriate relationship with domestic constitutonalism.
Book Synopsis Literature and Culture in Late Byzantine Thessalonica by : Eugenia Russell
Download or read book Literature and Culture in Late Byzantine Thessalonica written by Eugenia Russell and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2013-03-28 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 'long' fourteenth century perhaps can be seen as Thessalonica's heyday. Alongside its growing commercial prowess, the city was developing into an important centre of government, where members of the Byzantine imperial family of the Palaiologoi ruled independently under full imperial titles, striking coinage and following an increasingly autonomous external policy. It was also developing into a formidable centre for letters, education, and artistic expression, due in part to Palaiologan patronage. This volume sets out the political and commercial landscape of Thessalonica between 1303 and 1430, when the city fell to the Ottoman Turks, before focusing on the literary and hymnographical aspects of the city's cultural history and its legacy. The cosmopolitan nature of urban life in Thessalonica, the polyphony of opinions it experienced and expressed, its multiple links with centres such as Constantinople, Adrianople, Athos, Lemnos and Lesvos, and the diversity and strength of its authorial voices make the study of the city's cultural life a vital part of our understanding of the Byzantine Eastern Mediterranean.
Book Synopsis Diálogos: Placemaking in Latino Communities by : Michael Rios
Download or read book Diálogos: Placemaking in Latino Communities written by Michael Rios and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-06-25 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Latinos are one of the largest and fastest growing social groups in the United States, and their increased presence is profoundly shaping the character of urban, suburban, and rural places. This is a response to these developments and is the first book written for readers seeking to learn about, engage and plan with Latino communities. It considers how placemaking in marginalized communities sheds light on, and can inform, community-building practices of professionals and place dwellers alike. Diálogos: Placemaking in Latino Communities will help readers better understand the conflicts and challenges inherent in placemaking, and to make effective and sustainable choices for practice in an increasingly multi-ethnic world. The essays explore three aspects of place: the appropriation and territorialization of the built environment, the claiming of rights through collective action, and a sense of belonging through civic participation. The authors illustrate their ideas through case studies and explain the implications of their work for placemaking practice. A consistent theme about planning and design practice in Latino communities emerges throughout the book: placemaking happens with or without professional planners and designers. All of the essays in Diálogos demonstrate the need to not only imagine, build, and make places with local communities, but also to re-imagine how we practice democracy inclusive of cross-cultural exchange, understanding, and respect. This will require educators, students, and working professionals to incorporate the knowledge and skills of cultural competency into their everyday practices.
Download or read book Plato - Dialogues written by Plato and published by Read Books Ltd. This book was released on 2013-05-31 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These dialogues contain the core concepts of Platonic philosophy and serve as a good introduction to the legacy of Socrates and philosophy in the golden age of Greece. In the first of the dialogues Euthyphro and Socrates discuss and try to define allegiance. Euthyphro charges his father of murder of one of his workers; as Socrates is also being charged with impiety he hopes to learn a thing or two from Euthyphro. Apology is Plato's version of Socrates's speech at his trial in his own defense. Crito in the third dialogue discusses with Socrates the power of justice and offers to help Socrates escape from prison. In Meno, Socrates and Meno cover virtue, and whether or not this is something that can be taught and if there is a common virtue in everyone. And finally, Phaedo, who was present at Socrates's death, relates what happened in his final moments.
