Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Diseases of the Ear: Their Diagnosis and Treatment; A d104-Book of Aural Surgery in the Form of Academical Lectures The work of presenting to the American Medical public a new book on the Diseases of the Ear, was undertaken, because it was believed that there existed a need for it. The most prominent of the d104-Books, which have obtained a circulation in the United States, are those of Kramer, of Berlin, Itard and Meniere, of Paris, Toynbee and Wilde, respectively of London and Dublin. The works of the latter named, and especially that of Wilde, have found the most favor. Wilde's book has been out of print for some time, and there is no immediate prospect of a new edition. This is to be regretted, for probably no book has done so much for the advancement of its object as this production of a distinguished aural and ophthalmic surgeon. Toynbee has achieved so much for the only basis of all scientific and real progress in aural surgery, pathological anatomy, that we can but be grateful to him, although his book, rich in materials, seems to lack many of the requirements of a text-book for the general practitioner. Kramer's work was translated years ago, and we are indebted to it as being one of the successful pioneers in the way, now comparatively well trodden. Since then the authors views have been very much modified, and the last edition, "Die Ohrenheilkunde der Gegenwart, Berlin, 1862," lately translated under the auspices of the New Sydenham Society, would hardly be recognized as a lineal descendant of the first. This testifies at once to the honesty of, and progress in, the author's opinions. Through the extreme courtesy of Dr. Kramer, while in Berlin, I had the opportunity of seeing a good deal of his large private practice, and the pleasure of hearing his peculiar views at some length. I also saw somewhat of the practice of Dr. Erhard, Aural Surgeon and Lecturer in the University of Berlin, author of "Kli nische Otiatrie, Berlin, 1863." Book excerpt: Excerpt from Nature and Treatment of Diseases of the Ear: Second Edition of the Author's Treatise on Chronic Deafness, Much Improved and Enlarged A systematic treatise on diseases of the ear, at once scientific and practical, has long been felt to be a great desideratum in British medical literature. Believing the treatise of Dr. Kramer to merit the reputation which it has already acquired, to deserve the attention of the profession, and to be calculated to supply an acknowledged deficiency, I have presented it to the public in an English dress. Accuracy of diagnosis, and luminous descriptions of the diseases of which it treats, are among the chief merits of Dr. Kramer's work. It would not, therefore, have much enhanced the value of the present translation, had I appended to it the views of others, founded on cases the diagnosis of which was deficient. A few instances ill which it appeared to me that the author's spirit of criticism (generally very just) had carried him too far, I have deemed it a duty to notice. The additions with which Dr. Kramer has favoured me, since the publication of the last German edition, have been incorporated with the text. The last work which has appeared on this subject, is a very elaborate German treatise, by Dr. Chas. Gustavus Lincke, of Leipsic, entitled "A Manual of Theoretical and Practical Acoustic Medicine." The first part, only, is yet published, in a large and very thick octavo volume, comprising the Anatomy, Physiology, and Morbid Anatomy of the ear, illustrated by numerous lithographic plates. I have not had an opportunity of doing more than glance at this volume, whilst the last sheets of the present translation were passing through the press; but this I the less regret, as it does not contain the practical part of the subject. Our indefatigable German neighbours are evidently rousing themselves to remove the opprobrium that has hitherto attached to acoustic medicine. In these the correction of the ocular defect will enable them to obtain the stereoscopic picture. The stereoscopes (which will be found inserted into the cover) have been made by the firm of RI and J. Beck, and I am much indebted to them for the trouble they have taken in making them optically accurate and at the same time exactly suited for the purpose in view.
