Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although methods of urinary stone removal are becoming evermore effective, the prevalence of urolithiasis is continuously increasing. Epidemiological studies show that 5-10% of the population suffer from urinary stones. Stone removal alone is not a curative measure. Depending on the stone composition, a recurrence rate of 60-100% must be expected. Hence, analysis of the stone material and basic diagnosis of the metabolic origins of urolithiasis are imperative, as well as consistent recurrence prevention in high-risk patients. This revised and updated handbook meets these requirements. It is designed to assist clinicians and healthcare professionals by guiding them through the appropriate diagnostic examinations and the development of effective and safe plans for treatment and prevention. It takes the newest international and European guidelines for urinary stone therapy into account, and includes the latest findings in clinical and laboratory diagnosis, dietary therapy and medication. Furthermore, it offers specific solutions for the treatment of children. Its clear organization makes it a valuable and indispensable reference book, especially for urologists, nephrologists and pediatricians.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Urolithiasis is not only one of the most frequently encountered diseases at uro logical clinics; it is also the disorder whose treatment has shown the most rapid progress in the past decade. In that period, medicine has experienced a real revolution, characterized by minimally invasive treatments, improvement of the quality of life, and cost-effectiveness in treatment outcomes. In urology, the revolution started with the development of endoscopic retrograde treatment of urolithiasis in the upper urinary tract, which led to development of the percuta neous antegrade maneuver in the latter half of the 1970s. The most remarkable event occurred in 1982, when clinical use of extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy was introduced by the Munich group, represented by Dr. Christian Chaussy, at the 18th Congress of the International Society of Urology in San Francisco. With the advent of these new strategies, open surgery for urolithiasis has all but dis appeared. Today, with the availability of new technology and equipment, guide lines for the treatment of urolithiasis have changed in all developed countries. It is quite timely that the Meeting of International Consultation on Urolithiasis will be held in Paris in June 2001 to establish international guidelines for urolithiasis. Looking through this textbook for urolithiasis, I was greatly impressed to learn that we have already drawn up some guidelines. The book includes all the updated advances of urolithiasis presented by the most prominent and experi enced urologists from all around the world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The clinical specialty of adult nephrology has enjoyed spectacular growth during the past three decades. Such a statement is no less true for pediatric nephrology. This book stands in quiet testimony to that fact. Practitioners of pediatric nephrology are now concerned with the diagnosis and treat ment of young patients with a widened spectrum of primary and sec ondary diseases of the kidneys and urinary tract, hypertension and disorders of water, electrolyte and acid-base metabolism. Their science, deriving from an exciting blend of physiology, morphology, pathology, immunology, biochemistry, microbiology, genetics and pharmacology, must also include an understanding of human developmental biology an insight that colleagues who practice adult nephrology require to a somewhat lesser extent. Dramatic, continuing advances in our understanding of the pathogen esis, pathophysiology, diagnosis and treatment of kidney diseases has led to a cascade of books and monographs on various aspects of the subject. Nevertheless, in view of the clear emergence of pediatric nephrology as a distinct medical specialty, it is most appropriate that a practical book, which focuses almost exclusively on approaches to the evaluation and diagnosis of young patients with kidney disease and related disorders, should appear. In that sense this book is unique. It provides an easily accessible, practical compendium or guide to the clinical investigation of all facets of kidney disease in children. Its special and unique emphasis is directed toward various approaches to the evaluation of such patients and the interpretation of associated laboratory or radiographical data.
