Book excerpt: This book has been written for all adults interested in controlling diabetes, high blood pressure, and obesity. Developing a healthy lifestyle today is a chance at living a healthy life in the future. Understanding why you have to discard bad eating habits and exercise more should make it easier for you to keep yourself healthy. As we go about our lives, we tend to get distracted by what is observable, more worried about our weight and growing waistline than we are about life-threatening conditions that the three diseases are building in us. Modern medicine often leaves us little time to ask our doctors why and in what way changes to our diet and exercise can equally treat what appear to be such disparate and debilitating diseases as diabetes, high blood pressure and obesity. Because medical professionals routinely find themselves with too little time per patient and too many patients to fully explain what can happen if their recommendations are not followed, this book exposes in plain language how these three silent killers collaborate to incapacitate us.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the Pulitzer Prize and a documentary from Ken Burns on PBS, this New York Times bestseller is “an extraordinary achievement” (The New Yorker)—a magnificent, profoundly humane “biography” of cancer—from its first documented appearances thousands of years ago through the epic battles in the twentieth century to cure, control, and conquer it to a radical new understanding of its essence. Physician, researcher, and award-winning science writer, Siddhartha Mukherjee examines cancer with a cellular biologist’s precision, a historian’s perspective, and a biographer’s passion. The result is an astonishingly lucid and eloquent chronicle of a disease humans have lived with—and perished from—for more than five thousand years. The story of cancer is a story of human ingenuity, resilience, and perseverance, but also of hubris, paternalism, and misperception. Mukherjee recounts centuries of discoveries, setbacks, victories, and deaths, told through the eyes of his predecessors and peers, training their wits against an infinitely resourceful adversary that, just three decades ago, was thought to be easily vanquished in an all-out “war against cancer.” The book reads like a literary thriller with cancer as the protagonist. Riveting, urgent, and surprising, The Emperor of All Maladies provides a fascinating glimpse into the future of cancer treatments. It is an illuminating book that provides hope and clarity to those seeking to demystify cancer.

Book excerpt: Celebrated sex advice columnist and founder of the Emmy-winning It Gets Better campaign, Dan Savage delivers “powerful messages for both the head and heart” (Entertainment Weekly) From the moment he began writing his syndicated sex-advice column, Savage Love, Dan Savage has never been shy about expressing his opinion on controversial topics—political or otherwise. In the height of his activism, he addresses issues ranging from parenting and the gay agenda to the Catholic Church and health care. Among them: • Why straight people should have straight “pride” parades, too • Why Obamacare, as good as it is, is “still kinda evil” • Why what passes for sex-ed in America is more like “sex dread” • Why the Bible is “only as good and decent as the person reading it” Speaking to a broad range of subjects with brutal honesty and irreverent humor, American Savage is a pivotal piece that cements Dan Savage’s place as a provocative and insightful voice in American culture.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Perhaps the most difficult milestone in a young clinician's career is the completion of the first interview. For the typical trainee, the endeavor is fraught with apprehen sion and with some degree of dread. If the interview goes weIl, there is consider able rejoicing; if it goes badly, much consternation results. Irrespective of the amount of preparation that has taken place before the interview, the neophyte will justifiably remain nervous about this endeavor. Thus, the first edition of Diagnostic Interviewing was devoted to providing a clear outline for the student in tackling a large variety of patients in the interview setting. In consideration of the positive response to the first edition of Diagnostic Interviewing, published in 1985, we and our editor at Plenum Press, Eliot Werner, decided that it was time to update the material. However, the basic premise that a book of this nature needs to encompass theoretical rationale, clinical description, and the pragmatics of "how to" once again has been followed. And, as in the case of the first edition, this second edition does not represent the cat's being skinned in yet another way. Quite to the contrary, we still believe that our students truly need to read the material covered herein with considerable care, and once again the book is dedicated to them. We are particularly concerned that in the clinieal education of our graduate students, interviewing has been given short shrift.
