Book Synopsis Hindustani Music in the 20th Century by : W. van der Meer

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: AIM In spite of a reasonably extensive literature in English' and Indian vernaculars, there are extremely few books on Indian music that can be considered of a scientific standard. I found, when I took up an interest in Indian music in 1967, that even protracted reading of the studies in English was not conducive to an understanding of the principles of performance. Most of my study and research have been devoted to the gradual refinement of this very understanding. In the course of time it also became obvious that different scholars and different musicians held divergent views on many basic concepts of Indian music. Therefore, one of my tasks was to assess the degree of variability in Indian music. As a corollary I wanted to know how this variability could manifest itself as change in a relatively short and well-documented period. It is often assumed that traditional cultures, as e. g. in India, are rather inert and that the art forms hardly ever change. This study proves the contrary: Indian music has a strong vitality. If we examine the different treatises through the centuries this vitality would appear to be a basic characteristic. I felt that at least an effort to discover the roots of such change would be valuable as a contribution to the study of art history and possibly to the sociology of culture.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mahabharat is such a great saga, such a great book that has all the essence of life, present in it. This has love, hate, conspiracy, friendship, hatred, loyalty, treachery and all other such emotions. Before the great war of Mahabhrat, the great continent of India was full of brave hearts and warriors, but after the war was over, only a few warriors survived in this land. This war of Mahabharat was the result of two pledges; one that was taken by Pitamah Bhisma and the other pledge that was taken by the ruler of Gandhar, Shakuni. If Bhisma Pitamah had not taken the pledge that he would not sit on the throne, there would have been no chance that this war would have happened and if Shakuni had not taken the pledge that he would destroy the Kuru dynasty, then he would have never left Gandhar and come to Hastinapur; this would ensure that the seed of enmity between the Kauravas and Pandavas would have never grown. The situational pledges that were taken by Bhisma and Shakuni, later on turned into a curse for them. The almighty created such a situation, that both of them started regretting their decisions of taking such pledges. Shakuni never knew that, the sister he loved more that his life would one day be married to the same kuru dynasty, whose destruction has been pledged by him. I have tried to enlighten many unknown facts about the life of Shakuni so that the readers could know more and more about Shakuni. This is my first composition and I would like to dedicate this to, not only my late heavenly mother, but all other mothers too. Since father, brother and other such relations can be formed again, but the selfless love of a mother, once lost can never be found again. The pain of losing one’s mother in childhood and not finding mother like love again, stays with you forever like emptiness. Maybe this pain encourages me to hold the pen and start writing.

Book Synopsis Sitār Technique in Nibaddh Forms by : Stephen Slawek
Download or read book Sitār Technique in Nibaddh Forms written by Stephen Slawek and published by Motilal Banarsidass Publ.. This book was released on 1987 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Students of Indian music are well aware of the emphasis their gurus place on the development of correct technique through rigorous practice. This book focuses on sitar technique and shows how that technique comes into play during the improvisatory music-making endeavours of master sitarists. A series of systematic descriptions and analyses reveals how instrumental technique acts as a generative structure at the broad level and provides a corpus of factors of variation at the specific level. A unique feature of this study is the inclusion of musical transcriptions detailing not only the line of melody, but also the physical gestures (techniques) necessary to produce melody. Though technically complex in appearance, these transcriptions and the accompanying analyses provide valuable information to students interested in learning Sitar and to musicologists and ethnomusicologists inquiring into the basic improvisational processes that underlie contemporary styles of Sitar performance.

Book Synopsis The Devotional Poetry of Svāmī Haridās by : Lucy L. Rosenstein
Download or read book The Devotional Poetry of Svāmī Haridās written by Lucy L. Rosenstein and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-07-03 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 16th-century North Indian religious devotee, poet and musician, Svāmī Haridās, composed lyrics in Braj Bhāṣā, dedicated to the divine couple Rādhā and Kṛṣṇa. One hundred twenty-eight of them were later compiled in two anthologies: the didactic Aṣṭādaś siddhānta and the rapturous Kelimāl, and became the theological basis of the Haridāsī sampradāya, a sect which still flourishes in Vrindaban, U.P. Neither of these important works has hitherto been edited, properly translated or studied academically. The focus of this book is the text of Haridās’s poetry: its transmission, edition and interpretation. Sixteen 18th-19th century manuscripts are collated for the edition and classified with the help of computer programmes originally employed in taxonomy. The apparatus criticus is followed by an annotated English translation in which readings are assessed and points of linguistic interest discussed. The language of Haridās’s text is thoroughly examined, and a comprehensive etymological glossary is included to enhance our knowledge of Braj. Going beyond textual criticism, the book sets Haridās’s verses in a broader context. The introductory chapter discusses the theological views of the Haridāsī tradition against the background of bhakti, analyses the sources of information about Haridās, and attempts to reconstruct his life. Since Haridās’s lyrics were composed to be sung some of their musical features are analysed. The text of the Kelimāl is also examined through the sectarian concerns of its main commentaries. This study will be an important source of information to all scholars of Braj language and Kṛṣṇa devotionalism.
