This book analyses influences upon the movement and changes wrought by it in Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Kenya, Tanzania and Congo, highlighting its impact on spirituality, political discourse and culture. A variety of scholarly approaches to a complex and changing phenomenon are juxtaposed with the narration of personal stories of testimony, vital to spirituality and expression of the revival, which give a sense of the dynamism of the movement. Those yet unacquainted with the revival will find a helpful introduction to its history. Those more familiar with the movement will discover new perspectives on its influence.
Book Synopsis The Ik language by : Terrill B. Schrock
Download or read book The Ik language written by Terrill B. Schrock and published by Language Science Press. This book was released on 2017-03-13 with total page 617 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a dictionary and grammar sketch of Ik, one of the three Kuliak (Rub) languages spoken in the beautiful Karamoja region of northeastern Uganda. It is the lexicographic sequel to \textit{A grammar of Ik (Icé-tód): Northeast Uganda’s last thriving Kuliak language} (Schrock 2014). The present volume includes an Ik-English dictionary with roughly 8,700 entries, followed by a reversed English-Ik index. These two main sections are then supplemented with an outline of Ik grammar that is comprehensive in its coverage of topics and written in a simple style, using standard linguistic terminology in a way that is accessible to interested non-linguists as well. This book may prove useful for language preservation and development among the Ik people, as a reference tool for non-Ik learners of the language, and as a source of data, not only for the comparative study of Kuliak but also the wider Afroasiatic and Nilo-Saharan language families.
Download or read book Ogada written by Cp Skoda and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2008 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a masterfully composed story of an American "missionary kid" growing up amongst the Luo people in Kenya, attending a boarding school in the midst of the "Mau Mau Emergency" and straddling diverse cultures on two continents. Skoda is an extraordinarily keen observer with great intellectual curiosity amd verbal dexterity. The end result is beautiful prose which intertwines deeply personal experiences with detailed historical, geographic and cultural information. In closing, Skoda rewards the reader with "A Code of Behavior" and "A Declaration of Rights" designed for universal application. To refer to this book only as a personal memoir is to minimize the daring scope of its content, yet it is Skoda's personality and personal life experiences that enhance every page.

Book Synopsis African Print Cultures by : Derek Peterson
Download or read book African Print Cultures written by Derek Peterson and published by University of Michigan Press. This book was released on 2016-09-29 with total page 461 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essays collected in African Print Cultures claim African newspapers as subjects of historical and literary study. Newspapers were not only vehicles for anticolonial nationalism. They were also incubators of literary experimentation and networks by which new solidarities came into being. By focusing on the creative work that African editors and contributors did, this volume brings an infrastructure of African public culture into view. The first of four thematic sections, “African Newspaper Networks,” considers the work that newspaper editors did to relate events within their locality to happenings in far-off places. This work of correlation and juxtaposition made it possible for distant people to see themselves as fellow travellers. “Experiments with Genre” explores how newspapers nurtured the development of new literary genres, such as poetry, realist fiction, photoplays, and travel writing in African languages and in English. “Newspapers and Their Publics” looks at the ways in which African newspapers fostered the creation of new kinds of communities and served as networks for public interaction, political and otherwise. The final section, “Afterlives, ” is about the longue durée of history that newspapers helped to structure, and how, throughout the twentieth century, print allowed contributors to view their writing as material meant for posterity.
