Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The question of how musical coordination in a school wind band is addressed by pedagogues was qualitatively reconstructed using videographic interaction analysis. A process of Hervorhebungspraktik ('practice' of 'highlighting') was observed, which gradually brought musical elements out of their temporal context and into collective perception, allowing both atmospheric interaction with content and the growth of professional vision. A process of deconstruction and reintegration takes place as musical elements, now present in collective consciousness, withdraw back into the piece as a whole. This necessitates an educational approach emphasizing not only the elements themselves, but the relationships between them. The realms of edusemiotics and phenomenology give us a pragmatic way (in both a Deweyan and a Peircean sense) to approach learning in music-making that goes beyond the idea of (co-)constructivism as content-with-agency, teacher and student participate in coordinative interaction. Aimee Beaulieu Schmidt is a native Texan with teaching experience in American and German public education. As a band director and orchestral musician, she has helped build music education programs on two continents. She lives with her husband and two daughters near Frankfurt, Germany. Her research focuses on musical coordination, edusemiotics, and qualitative video analysis. Aimee Beaulieu Schmidt is a native Texan with teaching experience in American and German public education. This book was released on 2012-02-16 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thomas Alexander shows that the primary, guiding concern of Dewey's philosophy is his theory of aesthetic experience. He directly challenges those critics, most notably Stephen Pepper and Benedetto Croce, who argued that this area is the least consistent part of Dewey's thought. The author demonstrates that the fundamental concept in Dewey's system is that of "experience" and that paradigmatic treatment of experience is to be found in Dewey's analysis of aesthetics and art. The confusions resulting from the neglect of this orientation have led to prolonged misunderstandings, eventual neglect, and unwarranted popularity for ideas at odds with the genuine thrust of Dewey's philosophical concerns. By exposing the underlying aesthetic foundations of Dewey's philosophy, Alexander aims to rectify many of these errors, generating a fruitful new interest in Dewey.

Book excerpt: This work covers Bronson’s entire output in film and on television, and includes many film stills and photographs. Alphabetical entries list film or episode, complete cast and credits, and year of release. Accompanying each entry’s plot synopsis and discussion is a survey of the critical responses to the work. The great Charles Laughton once said Bronson “has the strongest face in the business, and he is also one of its best actors.” Pretty high praise for an actor who, though loved by fans worldwide, has been consistently underestimated by critics. Bronson’s career has spanned five decades, from such television appearances in The Fugitive, Rawhide, Bonanza and Have Gun, Will Travel as well as the telemovie A Family of Cops (1995) and its two sequels. He will long be remembered for his role as urban vigilante Paul Kersey in the Death Wish films. Bronson is one of the most enigmatic, and also most recognizable, of all film stars.

Book excerpt: First Published in 1999. The purpose of this series is to provide a contemporary assessment and history of the entire course of philosophical thought. Each book constitutes a detailed, critical introduction to the work of a philosopher of major influence and significance. Someone relatively new to philosophy might expect from the series title to have here a book about the disputes in which John Dewey engaged with other philosophers. ‘Arguments’ in the present context, however, refers to a general way of articulating thoughts, that is by offering some as reasons for holding others.
