Book Synopsis Formes Du Salut by : Emmanuelle Mercier
Download or read book Formes Du Salut written by Emmanuelle Mercier and published by Presses universitaires de Louvain. This book was released on 2020-05-27 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Synopsis Blurred Boundaries and Deceptive Dichotomies in Pre-Modern Texts and Images by : Dafna Nissim
Download or read book Blurred Boundaries and Deceptive Dichotomies in Pre-Modern Texts and Images written by Dafna Nissim and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2023-12-18 with total page 453 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays focuses on the way blurred boundaries are represented in pre-modern texts and visual art and how they were received and perceived by their audiences: readers, listeners, and viewers. According to the current understanding that opposing cognitive categories that are so common in modern thinking do not apply to pre-modern mentalities, we argue that individuals in medieval and pre-modern societies did not necessarily consider sacred and secular, male and female, real and fictional, and opposing emotions as absolute dichotomies. The contributors to the present collection examine a wide range of cultural artifacts – literary texts, wall paintings, sculptures, jewelry, manuscript illustrations, and various objects as to what they reflect regarding the dominant perceptual system – the network of beliefs, worldviews, presumptions, values, and norms of viewing/reading/hearing different from modern epistemology strongly predicated on the binary nature of things and people. The essays suggest that analyzing pre-modern cultural works of art or literature in light of reception theory can lead to a better understanding of how those cultural products influenced individuals and impacted their thoughts and actions.
Book Synopsis The Waxing of the Middle Ages by : Charles-Louis Morand-Métivier
Download or read book The Waxing of the Middle Ages written by Charles-Louis Morand-Métivier and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2023-04-14 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Johan Huizinga’s much-loved and much-contested Autumn of the Middle Ages, first published in 1919, encouraged an image of the Late French Middle Ages as a flamboyant but empty period of decline and nostalgia. Many studies, particularly literary studies, have challenged Huizinga’s perceptions of individual works or genres. Still, the vision of the Late French and Burgundian Middle Ages as a sad transitional phase between the High Middle Ages and the Renaissance persists. Yet, a series of exceptionally significant cultural developments mark the period. The Waxing of the Middle Ages sets out to provide a rich, complex, and diverse study of these developments and to reassert that late medieval France is crucial in its own right. The collection argues for an approach that views the late medieval period not as an afterthought, or a blind spot, but as a period that is key in understanding the fluidity of time, traditions, culture, and history. Each essay explores some “cultural form,” to borrow Huizinga’s expression, to expose the false divide that has dominated modern scholarship.

Book Synopsis "Women, Manuscripts and Identity in Northern Europe, 1350?550 " by : JoniM. Hand
Download or read book "Women, Manuscripts and Identity in Northern Europe, 1350?550 " written by JoniM. Hand and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Author Joni M. Hand sheds light on the reasons women of the Valois courts from the mid-fourteenth to the mid-sixteenth century commissioned devotional manuscripts. Visually interpreting the non-text elements-portraits, coats of arms, and marginalia-as well as the texts, Hand explores how the manuscripts were used to express the women?s religious, political, and/or genealogical concerns. This study is arranged thematically according to the method in which the owner is represented. Recognizing the considerable influence these women had on the appearance of their books, Hand interrogates how the manuscripts became a means of self-expression beyond the realm of devotional practice. She reveals how noblewomen used their private devotional manuscripts as vehicles for self-definition, to reflect familial, political, and social concerns, and to preserve the devotional and cultural traditions of their families. Drawing on documentation of women?s book collections that has been buried within the inventories of their fathers, husbands, or sons, Hand explores how these women contributed to the cultural and spiritual character of the courts, and played an integral role in the formation and evolution of the royal libraries in Northern Europe.
Book Synopsis The Technology of Salvation and the Art of Geertgen tot Sint Jans by : JohnR. Decker
Download or read book The Technology of Salvation and the Art of Geertgen tot Sint Jans written by JohnR. Decker and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Investigating the complex interactions between devotional imagery and Church doctrine in the Low Countries during the fifteenth century, this book demonstrates how the pictorial arts intersected with popular religious practice. The author reconstructs the conceptual frameworks underlying the use and production of religious art in this period and provides a more nuanced understanding of the use of images in the process of soul formation. This study delves into the complexity of the early modern system of personal justification and argues that religious images and objects were part of a larger 'Technology of Salvation.' In order to make these connections clearer, the author analyzes selected works by Geertgen tot Sint Jans (Little Gerard at St. John's) and shows how they functioned within their larger social and historical milieu.
