Book excerpt: “O Holy Spirit, descend plentifully into my heart. Enlighten the dark corners of this neglected dwelling and scatter there Thy cheerful beams.” —Saint Augustine The Holy Spirit, the third person of the Trinity, remains a mystery for many of us. We “adore and glorify” the Spirit with the Father and the Son, but do we really understand the power or the actions of the Spirit? Father Mitch Pacwa, renowned spiritual leader and popular author and TV host, guides us through seven sessions on the Holy Spirit, and answering questions like: What’s the Holy Spirit’s role in creation? How does the Holy Spirit bestow authority and empower us?How did the Spirit work through the prophets? How does the Spirit give us wisdom and "lead us into all truth"? What is the relationship between the Holy Spirit, Jesus, and the Trinity? How did the Holy Spirit empower Mary and others in the New Testament? What role does the Holy Spirit play in our spiritual lives? Written to be used by groups or individuals, each session includes catechesis, discussion, and a call to put the learning into practice. Let this study encourage you, the words of the Veni, Creator Spiritus, which dates back to the ninth century, pray, “Come Holy Spirit, Creator blest, and in our souls take up Thy rest.”

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is being published as gift to the Chaminade-Nativity Community of Faith - It is they who brought me from a very dark place into the light. They restored my faith and gave me hope. Like Ezekiel’s vision (37) in the graveyard, I received the Holy Spirit and came to life! This is my gift to them. I have published it to preserve 40 years of private revelation given to me by the Holy Spirit. I believe that the Lord wants it published to remind us that we are well loved, that he is alive and well in his church, and that He died for all mankind. In the Catholic Church, these words are considered “private revelation”, as distinguished from the Scriptures or the official teachings and doctrine of the Catholic Church. As such, they require consultation and discernment as to their authenticity. Before publication they were submitted to the Magisterium of the Archdiocese of Miami (as the conscience of the community) and found to be free of doctrinal or moral error. This process is known as receiving the Imprimatur – see on page 3. As members of the Charismatic Renewal part of each meeting is devoted to listening to the Lord and speaking out a word He may have for us. We call it “prophecy”. Its authenticity is discerned by the community. We believe that prophecy is one of the Gifts of the Holy Spirit given to us to guide, correct, encourage, and build community, reminding us that God remains with His church and continues to reveal Himself to us. Prophecy is ordinarily spoken out spontaneously, not written as mine is. Over the years I wondered why my prophecy was written, until I started to prepare this book for publication. It was then that I realized that He knew 40 years ago that He wanted this book to be published. Had they been given spontaneously they would not have been written down and I would not have had them to publish. It had taken me 40 years to see it. Two books, God Calling and Jesus Calling were the inspiration for the title of the book. These two authors, looking for a reason to go on living, found no consolation in their desperate prayers. In a final effort they decided to pray as usual, listen and write down anything they thought could be a response from God. In their listening a dialogue began that flowered into relationship. Something interesting happened in the process of publication. Because many people, when they read some of the words thought that it was poetry I had written myself, I wanted to assure that everyone knew that I was not the author of the book but that I was, like the other two authors, only a listener and collector of the words. This was made clear in the Introduction and Conclusion of the book. After much thought I decided that under these circumstances it would be best to use a pen name rather than my own and had fun picking one out – A.L. Istener (a listener). After sending the name in to the publisher I had lunch with a friend and colleague who is Hungarian. “Isten”, she said, means “God” in Hungarian. He had figured that out too. Oddity: Most of the words have no punctuation – After praying about it, my understanding is that those who know his voice know his inflections also, which makes punctuation unnecessary. I like the sound of it better myself without it. It is my hope that those who read this book do so using the following method – His favorite invitation “Come here, climb into My arms. Let Me cradle you right here, close to My heart. Can you hear it beating? I just want to love you.” I guarantee that you will be able to recognize his voice too.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the 1929 English translation of the original German text first published in 1924 and authored by one of the world’s most distinguished Christian philosophers, Dr. Karl Adam. This book is a brilliant and evocative study of the fundamental concepts of the Catholic Faith, from its tenets, its historical development and the role of the Church in world society. For many on the outside, Catholicism, according to Dr. Adam, represents a daunting and somewhat foreign confused mass of conflicting forces that has somehow survived the tests of time. Catholicism is simultaneously new yet quite old; holy yet corrupt; hierarchical yet personal; dogmatic yet utilitarian, and so on. How can someone outside the Church get a good grasp on the essence of Catholicism when it is so vast and seemingly complex? Those attempting to grasp the very heart and spirit of Catholicism should read Karl Adam’s book, which is a most elegant and concise exploration of the faith and an attempt to address these ambiguities. What are the fundamental attributes of the Catholic Church? What is the source from which it has drawn vigor and life through its two thousand years of life on earth? What are the secret sources of its incredible vitality in the world today? The author answers these and many other questions about the nature and structure of the Church. He examines the essential nature of the Catholic Church from the basic premise that it was expressly founded by Christ, traces its historical development and analyzes its actual functioning through the ages.

Now one class of such men endeavor to transfer to things incorporeal and spiritual the ideas they have formed, whether through experience of the bodily senses, or by natural human wit and diligent quickness, or by the aid of art, from things corporeal; so as to seek to measure and conceive of the former by the latter. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many of us fail to recognize that obtaining the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit is absolutely essential to getting to heaven. We often block their reception through our own faults. We fail to see how they are passed on or strengthened in the sacraments. And, sadly, we forget to petition God in prayer to bestow these gifts upon us. In these pages, Dr. Kevin Vost — best-selling author of The One-Minute Aquinas — provides us with a substantive yet readable introduction to the seven gifts and how we can humbly submit our wills to the stirrings of the Holy Spirit. As Dr. Vost explains, these God-given gifts help us to conform our lives to His image, intellect and will. They prevent us from being drawn into frustration – and possibly self-destruction – by following our own sensual appetites. Indeed, the gifts of the Holy Spirit are the only path to being fully happy on earth and in the life to come. With St. Thomas Aquinas and St. Bonaventure as his guides, Dr. Vost introduces you to the special charism of the Holy Spirit before explaining each gift one by one. You’ll discover the special meaning behind each of the natural and theological virtues, and you’ll learn the indispensible link between the seven gifts and the Beatitudes. You’ll also learn: How the seven gifts differ from the fruits of the Holy Spirit. The three ways to perfect fear of the Lord. The one sacrament that helps you fortify fortitude – it’s not the one you think. How the gift of knowledge differs from the gift of understanding. The seven steps to unwrapping – and sharing – each of the Holy Spirit’s gifts. The greatest of the seven gifts – and why you must possess it to attain heaven. Are the seven gifts habits we must develop, or does the Holy Spirit instill the habits in us? Don’t let another year go by without unwrapping and enjoying the gifts of the Holy Spirit. Read this book, and then accept the seven gifts the Holy Spirit so desperately wants to give you.

The Catechism draws on the Bible, the Mass, the Sacraments, Church tradition and teaching, and the lives of saints. It comes with a complete index, footnotes and cross-references for a fuller understanding of every subject. The word catechism means "instruction" - this book will serve as the standard for all future catechisms.
