Book Synopsis Deities and Devotees by : Uma Maheswari Bhrugubanda
Download or read book Deities and Devotees written by Uma Maheswari Bhrugubanda and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-09-18 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How have cinema and popular religion shaped each other? Is the display of devotion in a cinema hall the same as devotion in a temple? How do we understand cinema’s compelling power to mesmerize people? Unlike Hindi cinema, mythological and devotional films remained popular genres in Telugu (and Tamil too) until quite recently. The political success of film star N.T. Rama Rao, well-known for his portrayal of gods and kings, posed afresh the problem of cinema’s power to enthral. To what extent viewers were persuaded of his divinity became a matter of debate. In later decades, the figure of another kind of viewer haunted the discourses around cinema, that of the female viewer who got possessed during screenings of goddess films. Using questions around viewership as the focal point, this book studies the intersections between popular cinema, religion, and politics in South India. The first full-length study of Telugu mythological and devotional films, it combines an account of the history and politics of these genres with an anthropology of film-making and viewership practices. It argues that cinema and other audio-visual technologies lead to the re-orientation of sensibilities and the cultivation of new sensory modes.

Book Synopsis If It's Monday It Must Be Madurai by : Srinath Perur
Download or read book If It's Monday It Must Be Madurai written by Srinath Perur and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2018-02-15 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is it like to travel with others for adventure, lust and god? This delightful travelogue, in which Srinath Perur embarks upon ten conducted tours, is full of rich experiences: hanging on to a camel in the Thar Desert, joining thousands on a pilgrimage in Maharashtra, crossing living root bridges near Cherrapunji, rediscovering music while on the trail of Kabir, and a lot more. As much about people as it is about places, the book is also a reflection of the nature of popular travel today, which is marked by the packaging of experiences, the formation of tourist economies and compulsive picture-taking. How this influences tourists comes across vividly: in their creation of a mini India on a bus as they race through treasured sights in Europe; in their perfunctory devotion as they hop from temple to temple in Tamil Nadu; and in their ‘enjoying’ with sex workers far away from home. Ironic, and often comic, If It’s Monday It Must Be Madurai is an idiosyncratic portrait of India and her people.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many of us think that Bhakti is discovering our Iśţa Devatā— chosen deity and getting involved with ritualistic worship, visiting the places of pilgrimage and observing vigils and fasts. And we are not really very far from truth. While Bhakti does recommend these activities for its practice, they are not its only activities, but something more, much more. The core of Bhakti is Love— feeling of oneness. Though it does start with the IśţaDevatā, the feeling of oneness does not stop there, but keeps expanding till one starts feeling one with this whole Existence. Life of Saṅt Jñāneśwar, also known as Saṅt Jñānadev and his three saintly siblings Nivŗttināth, Sopāndev and Muktābāi of the late thirteenth century forms a perfect background to understand and practice this wonderful path of Love. Though born in the community of Brahmins, they were ostracised from the society and persecuted. For their tender age, they exhibited indomitable grit not only to bear the tribulation willingly but to transform the negative feelings cascaded by the society into divine emotions of compassion and unbound love. This book tries to present the story of such transformation through the events and encounters they had with their persecutors, masses and contemporary seekers and saints. It tries to narrate the art of regaining the simplicity, faith, forgiveness, compassion and love that live in every heart.
