Book excerpt: What are these graceful visitors to our skies? We now know that they bring both life and death and teach us about our origins. Comet begins with a breathtaking journey through space astride a comet. Pulitzer Prize-winning astronomer Carl Sagan, author of Cosmos and Contact, and writer Ann Druyan explore the origin, nature, and future of comets, and the exotic myths and portents attached to them. The authors show how comets have spurred some of the great discoveries in the history of science and raise intriguing questions about these brilliant visitors from the interstellar dark. Were the fates of the dinosaurs and the origins of humans tied to the wanderings of a comet? Are comets the building blocks from which worlds are formed? Lavishly illustrated with photographs and specially commissioned full-color paintings, Comet is an enthralling adventure, indispensable for anyone who has ever gazed up at the heavens and wondered why. Praise for Comet "Simply the best." —The Times of London "Fascinating, evocative, inspiring." —The Washington Post "Comet humanizes science. A beautiful, interesting book." —United Press International "Masterful . . . science, poetry, and imagination." —The Atlanta Journal & Constitution

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The appearance of this comet caused so many panicked inquiries to be made of Pierre Bayle, one of the Enlightenment's greatest thinkers, that he decided to formally respond to them, hence the present work, which first appeared in 1682. The book's principle task was to undermine the influence of "superstition" in political life, and it was here that Bayle made the notorious suggestion, unique in the history of political thought until then, that a decent society of atheists is possible in principle. There is no other English translation of this book in print -- the only other version was printed in 1708. This translation is based on a recently revised critical edition of the complete French text and includes a substantial interpretive essay that both elucidates the arguments of the work and indicates the importance of Bayle in the history of the modern Enlightenment.

Book excerpt: In a lively investigation into the boundaries between popular culture and early-modern science, Sara Schechner presents a case study that challenges the view that rationalism was at odds with popular belief in the development of scientific theories. Schechner Genuth delineates the evolution of people's understanding of comets, showing that until the seventeenth century, all members of society dreaded comets as heaven-sent portents of plague, flood, civil disorder, and other calamities. Although these beliefs became spurned as "vulgar superstitions" by the elite before the end of the century, she shows that they were nonetheless absorbed into the science of Newton and Halley, contributing to their theories in subtle yet profound ways. Schechner weaves together many strands of thought: views of comets as signs and causes of social and physical changes; vigilance toward monsters and prodigies as indicators of God's will; Christian eschatology; scientific interpretations of Scripture; astrological prognostication and political propaganda; and celestial mechanics and astrophysics. This exploration of the interplay between high and low beliefs about nature leads to the conclusion that popular and long-held views of comets as divine signs were not overturned by astronomical discoveries. Indeed, they became part of the foundation on which modern cosmology was built.

Book excerpt: Chap. I. Being an Introduction to the whole Work. I doubt not but the title of this book will amuse some of my reading friends a little at first; they will make a pause, perhaps, as they do at a witch’s prayer, and be some time resolving whether they had best look into it or no, lest they should really raise the Devil by reading his story. Children and old women have told themselves so many frightful things of the Devil, and have form’d ideas of him in their minds, in so many horrible and monstrous shapes, that really it were enough to fright the Devil himself, to meet himself in the dark, dress’d up in the several figures which imagination has form’d for him in the minds of men; and as for themselves, I cannot think by any means that the Devil would terrify them half so much, if they were to converse face to face with him. It must certainly therefore be a most useful undertaking to give the true history of this Tyrant of the air, this God of the world, this terror and aversion of mankind, which we call Devil; to shew what he is, and what he is not, where he is, and where he is not, when he is in us, and when he is not; for I cannot doubt but that the Devil is really and bona fide in a great many of our honest weak-headed friends, when they themselves know nothing of the matter. Nor is the work so difficult as some may imagine. The Devil’s history is not so hard to come at, as it seems to be; His original and the first rise of his family is upon record, and as for his conduct, he has acted indeed in the dark, as to method in many things; but in general, as cunning as he is, he has been fool enough to expose himself in some of the most considerable transactions of his Life, and has not shewn himself a politician at all: Our old friend Matchiavel outdid him in many things, and I may in the process of this work give an account of several of the sons of Adam, and some societies of ’em too, who have out-witted the Devil, nay, who have out-sin’dthe Devil, and that I think may be call’d out-shooting him in his own bow.

When he finally learns why, he is again in the company of the Andromedans, aliens who have been on Earth for millennia. Jay falls in love with the beautiful Andromedan woman, Melinda, as he relives history since the fall of Atlantis to the present day. He discovers the source of evil in the form of the devil's Dragons, reptilian invaders whose fury destroyed Earth's earliest civilizations. Bent on revenge for their defeat at Atlantis, the Dragons are headed toward Earth again. With the help of the Andromedans, Jay hopes to thwart another catastrophe. But the Sirians, a race of dominating humans who developed mankind out of a tribe of apes, resent Jay's powers he has gained from the Andromedans. Jay must first humble the Sirians before he can even begin the task of stopping the Dragons in their latest quest to bring ruin to our beautiful planet Earth. The Earth’s Triad Empire protected the fragile network of colonies with a nimble fleet. Immense wealth and power was tempered by ethical laws. The Deerborne family embodied all that was good. Knowledge abounded; they learned. Opportunities were countless; they achieved. Selfless sacrifice was critical; they volunteered. A flawed orphan came into their care; they adopted. Fate placed the Deerbornes at the center of a Triad crisis. In the midst of this golden era, the empire’s lifeblood began to fail. Commodity trades were twisted by greed. Intelligence agents who discovered problems became ineffective. Festering tensions became revolts against the empire. Freedoms for the people narrowed and the Triad reacted with excessive force. Experts blamed all ills on the mysterious pressers: aliens possessing no way to communicate with humans. As the Fleet activated the siege weapon Redemption, unexplained events intensified. Could the Deerbornes return peace to the Triad? Could they prevent genocide of the pressers? Then, warrior-aliens received an omen from a rogue comet: war with the Triad was coming.
