Book excerpt: CopperI needed a break, so I took off to my friend's cabin for a few days for some peace and quiet. Instead, I found an injured woman in the woods claiming to be a lost hiker. I immediately knew there was more to her story, and I was right, but the bombshell she dropped was the last thing I expected. LaylaI wasn't sure how much more I could take. After losing my mother, my life drastically changed, and I found myself escaping from one bad situation only to land right in the middle of another. I was alone and lost, and it seemed like every person I met tried to take advantage of me. When a sexy, beast of a man appeared out of nowhere and came to my rescue with guns blazing, I didn't know whether to trust him or run screaming. Ultimately, I ran, but he followed and refused to let me go.This is the first book in the Devil Springs Blackwings MC Series. It is heavily tied to the Blackwings MC Series. You can start with Copper, but there are references to characters and events from the previous series that may take away from your reading experience. I recommend starting with Dash (Blackwings MC Book One).Adult Content Warning: This book is intended for readers 18 years and older. It contains adult language, explicit sex, and violence.

Too bad my gut is telling me the woman I want more than anything is trouble looking for a place to happen. Tatum is my match in every way. She's intelligent, sassy, isn't afraid to stand toe-to-toe with me, and is sexy as sin. Half the time I don't know if I'm infuriated with her or just that turned on. But Tatum has secrets. And I'll be damned if harm will come to my club because of her. Lies and secrets took my mother, but I won't let them take my current family. None of that stops me from wanting Tatum so bad it hurts, though.Tatum: Part of my job is keeping secrets. That's nothing new for me and my sister. My career and her lack of luck in love puts us smack dab in the middle of a major kidnapping case-leaving the authorities no choice but to relocate us. With new identities in place, we end up in Devil Springs, right next door to a business owned by the local bikers-the Blackwings MC. As much as we need to ignore these men, circumstances beyond our control force us into their orbit, and then into their world. As if that wasn't enough, the club Enforcer, Batta, sparks a fire in me that I wasn't expecting. Now, I'm forced to continue lying to someone about who I am and what I do, when all I want to do is tell him truth. But my honesty could mean blowing the case and putting my sister's life at risk-not to mention jeopardizing his.

And I couldn't spend much time searching for her because I was busy learning how to adjust to my new life. SloaneWhile sorting through my late mother's belongings, I discovered a family secret. Book excerpt: Something strange was going on... ... and he wasn't leaving until he figured it out. Strangers weren't welcome in the town of Devil Springs, something that Chance Lowry found out the hard way on his way through to Wyoming. Normally, he would have just chalked it up to the town being unfriendly, but this wasn't the case. Something else was going on here. He was only passing through until people started telling him to leave not long after he hit town. That changed everything. He knew when he was being bullied and he didn't like it. His gut told him to take the advice and go without getting involved, but then he found himself mixed up with something he hadn't anticipated. Now, being threatened to leave had become too personal for him. He had become involved with this town whether he liked it or not. Besides, no one told him when to leave a town. No one.

Book Synopsis The Devil's Triangle by : James M. Smallwood
Download or read book The Devil's Triangle written by James M. Smallwood and published by University of North Texas Press. This book was released on 2019-09-15 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the Texas Reconstruction Era (1865-1877), many returning Confederate veterans organized outlaw gangs and Ku Klux Klan groups to continue the war and to take the battle to Yankee occupiers, native white Unionists, and their allies, the free people. This study of Benjamin Bickerstaff and other Northeast Texans provides a microhistory of the larger whole. Bickerstaff founded Ku Klux Klan groups in at least two Northeast Texas counties and led a gang of raiders who, at times, numbered up to 500 men. He joined the ranks of guerrilla fighters like Cullen Baker and Bob Lee and, with their gangs often riding together, brought chaos and death to the “Devil’s Triangle,” the Northeast Texas region where they created one disaster after another. “This book provides a well-researched, exhaustive, and fascinating examination of the life of Benjamin Bickerstaff, a desperado who preyed on blacks, Unionists, and others in northeastern Texas during the Reconstruction era until armed citizens killed him in the town of Alvarado in 1869. The work adds to our knowledge of Reconstruction violence and graphically supports the idea that the Civil War in Texas did not really end in 1865 but continued long afterward.”—Carl Moneyhon, author of Texas after the Civil War: The Struggle of Reconstruction

Book Synopsis Drawn to the Deep by : Julie Hauserman
Download or read book Drawn to the Deep written by Julie Hauserman and published by University Press of Florida. This book was released on 2018-08-01 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: National Outdoor Book Award, History/Biography Category Dan's Cave looks like the entrance to the underworld. Two divers swim along a luminous blue-green passage, flashlights cutting through the water, a dark mass of stalactites suspended overhead. This is the breathtaking National Geographic cover photo taken by Wes Skiles (1958–2010), a top nature photographer who died in a diving accident before the issue was published. Drawn to the Deep celebrates the life of an extraordinary adventurer who braved extreme danger to share the hidden beauty and environmental truths of the planet with others. Skiles felt a pull to the water as a child, captivated by the cobalt springs of Florida. His passion for diving and his innovative camera techniques earned him assignments with National Geographic and Outside. He also took part in creating over a hundred films, many of which won international awards and acclaim. Skiles was a self-taught expert on Florida's freshwater springs and an outspoken advocate for their conservation. He went head to head with scientists and government officials who dismissed his firsthand observations of water movement through the "Swiss-cheese" karst rock of the underground aquifer. But he never gave up on his quest to disprove the prevailing scientific models or to protest what they allowed—the unchecked pumping and depletion of Florida's groundwater. Through interviews with Skiles's friends and family, along with insights from his own journals, Julie Hauserman describes the escapades and achievements that characterized his life's work. This book is the inspiring story of an explorer and activist who uncovered environmental abuses, advanced the field of underwater photography, and astonished the world with unprecedented views of the secret depths of the planet.

Download or read book Devil's Bargains written by Hal Rothman and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The West is popularly perceived as America's last outpost of unfettered opportunity, but twentieth-century corporate tourism has transformed it into America's "land of opportunism." From Sun Valley to Santa Fe, towns throughout the West have been turned over to outsiders—and not just to those who visit and move on, but to those who stay and control. Although tourism has been a blessing for many, bringing economic and cultural prosperity to communities without obvious means of support or allowing towns on the brink of extinction to renew themselves; the costs on more intangible levels may be said to outweigh the benefits and be a devil's bargain in the making. Hal Rothman examines the effect of twentieth-century tourism on the West and exposes that industry's darker side. He tells how tourism evolved from Grand Canyon rail trips to Sun Valley ski weekends and Disneyland vacations, and how the post-World War II boom in air travel and luxury hotels capitalized on a surge in discretionary income for many Americans, combined with newfound leisure time. From major destinations like Las Vegas to revitalized towns like Aspen and Moab, Rothman reveals how the introduction of tourism into a community may seem innocuous, but residents gradually realize, as they seek to preserve the authenticity of their communities, that decision-making power has subtly shifted from the community itself to the newly arrived corporate financiers. And because tourism often results in a redistribution of wealth and power to "outsiders," observes Rothman, it represents a new form of colonialism for the region. By depicting the nature of tourism in the American West through true stories of places and individuals that have felt its grasp, Rothman doesn't just document the effects of tourism but provides us with an enlightened explanation of the shape these changes take. Deftly balancing historical perspective with an eye for what's happening in the region right now, his book sets new standards for the study of tourism and is one that no citizen of the West whose life is touched by that industry can afford to ignore.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The New York Times bestselling author of Ordinary Grace weaves a vivid and pulse-pounding thriller that follows Cork O’Connor’s search for a missing man amid the fraught tensions at the border between Arizona and Mexico. On the Fourth of July, just as fireworks are about to go off in Aurora, Minnesota, Cork O’Connor and his new bride Rainy Bisonette receive a desperate phone call from Rainy’s son, Peter. The connection is terrible but before the line goes dead, they hear Peter confess to the murder of someone named Rodriquez. The following morning, Cork and Rainy fly to southern Arizona, where Peter has been working as a counselor in a well-known drug rehab center. When they arrive, they learn that Peter was fired six months earlier and hasn’t been heard from since. So they head to the little desert town of Sulfur Springs where Peter has been receiving his mail. But no one in Sulfur Springs seems to know him. They do, however, seem to recognize the name Rodriguez. Apparently, the Rodriguez family is one of the cartels controlling everything illegal that crosses the border from Mexico. As they gather scraps of information about Peter, Cork and Rainy are warned time and again that there is a war going on along the border. “Trust no one in Coronado County,” is the most common piece of advice they receive, and Cork doesn’t have to be told twice. To him, Arizona is alien country. The relentless heat, the absence of water and big trees and shade all feel nightmarish to him, as does his growing sense that Rainy might know more about what’s going on than she’s willing to admit in this fresh, exhilarating, and white-knuckle mystery starring one of the greatest heroes of fiction.
